Numerical prediction of turbulent flow and heat transfer in helically coiled pipes

Abstract Computational results were obtained for turbulent flow and heat transfer in curved pipes, representative of helically coiled heat exchangers. Following a grid refinement study, grid independent predictions from alternative turbulence models ( k – ɛ , SST k – ω and RSM– ω ) were compared with DNS results and experimental pressure drop and heat transfer data. Using the SST k – ω and RSM– ω models, pressure drop results were in excellent agreement with literature data and the Ito correlation. For heat transfer, the literature is not comparably complete or accurate, but a satisfactory agreement was obtained in the range of available data. Unsatisfactory results, both for pressure drop …

Establishment of endometrial receptivity is vital for successful embryo implantation; its failure causes infertility. Epithelial receptivity acquisition involves dramatic structural changes in the plasma membrane and cytoskeleton. Proprotein convertase 5/6 (PC6), a serine protease of the proprotein convertase (PC) family, is up-regulated in the human endometrium specifically at the time of epithelial receptivity and stromal cell decidualization. Experimental results on a solar desiccant and evaporative cooling system equipped with wet heat exchangers

An innovative solar assisted desiccant and evaporative cooling (DEC) system for building air conditioning has been installed at the Solar Laboratory of the University of Palermo. In this system, air-to-air packaged wet heat exchangers are used to maximise the exploitation of the evaporative cooling potential associated with the exhaust air stream. Results obtained are very positive, showing that DEC systems can benefit from the use of wet heat exchangers to efficiently cool the air stream after the adsorption process in the desiccant wheel, without any change in moisture content

PSA-based phase regeneration of DPSK signals in a silicon germanium waveguide

We demonstrate a polarization-assisted PSA-based phase regenerator in a passive low-birefringence SiGe waveguide at low CW pump power. A PSER of 28.6-dB enables a six-fold reduction in phase-error and BER improvement of approximately 2-dB in the regenerated signal.

Abstract The ability of plant cells to maintain cytoplasm ion homeostasis under saline stress is among the main mechanisms involved in salt tolerance. To cope with excess Na + , cells extrude it from the cytoplasm, which requires expenditure of metabolic energy, provided by H + gradients generated by membrane-bound H + -pumps. Mechanisms of endothelial cell swelling from lactacidosis studied in vitro

One of the early sequelae of ischemia is an increase of circulating lactic acid that occurs in response to anaerobic metabolism. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether lactic acidosis can induce endothelial swelling in vitro under closely controlled extracellular conditions. Cell volume of suspended cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells was measured by use of an advanced Coulter technique employing the “pulse area analysis” signal-processing technique (CASY1). The isosmotic reduction of pH from 7.4 to 6.8 had no effect on cell volume. Lowering of pH to 6.6, 6.4, or 6.0, however, led to significant, pH-dependent increases of cell volume.
