Comprehensive pore structure characterization of silica monoliths with controlled mesopore size and macropore size by nitrogen sorption, mercury poro…

2005

The porosity of monolithic silica columns is measured by using different analytical methods. Two sets of monoliths were prepared with a given mesopore diameter of 10 and 25 nm, respectively and with gradated macropore diameters between 1.8 and 7.5 microm. After preparing the two sets of monolithic silica columns with different macro- and mesopores the internal, external and total porosity of these columns are determined by inverse size-exclusion chromatography (ISEC) using polystyrene samples of narrow molecular size distribution and known average molecular weight. The ISEC data from the 4.6 mm analytical monolithic silica columns are used to determine the structural properties of monolithi…

Pore structural characterization of monolithic silica columns by inverse size-exclusion chromatography

2007

In this work, a parallel pore model (PPM) and a pore network model (PNM) are developed to provide a state-of-art method for the calculation of several characteristic pore structural parameters from inverse size-exclusion chromatography (ISEC) experiments. The proposed PPM and PNM could be applicable to both monoliths and columns packed with porous particles. The PPM and PNM proposed in this work are able to predict the existence of the second inflection point in the experimental exclusion curve that has been observed for monolithic materials by accounting for volume partitioning of the polymer standards in the macropores of the column. The appearance and prominence of the second inflection …

Post-Mortem Investigations for the Diagnosis of Sepsis: A Review of Literature

2020

To date, sepsis is still one of the most important causes of death due to the difficulties concerning the achievement of a correct diagnosis. As well as in a clinical context, also in a medico-legal setting the diagnosis of sepsis can reveal challenging due to the unspecificity of the signs detected during autopsies, especially when no ante-mortem clinical data, laboratory, and cultural results are available. Thus, a systematic review of literature was performed to provide an overview of the main available and updated forensic tools for the post-mortem diagnosis of sepsis. Moreover, the aim of this review was to evaluate whether a marker or a combination of markers exist, specific enough to…

Clinical behavior of children with infantile cerebral palsy after ozone therapy

2018

Objective.
The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of ozone therapy in the treatment of Infantile Cerebral Palsy (ICP).

 Patients and methods.
A non-controlled clinical assay was made in the Ozone Research Center (CIO), Havana, Cuba from January 2013 to January 2014. The sample was constituted by patients remitted to pediatrics consultation of CIO, to whom inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. The study group involved 45 patients, from 1 month of birth to 8 years, with cerebral palsy of hypoxic-ischemic cause. The evaluation criteria were: evolution of the motor disorder according to the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) scale…

Modelling of Social Policy and Initiatives under COVID-19: Rural NEET Youth Case Study

2021

NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) youth rates in Europe are generally higher in rural regions than in urban areas and the share in rural regions is constantly increasing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, young people became even more vulnerable as they experienced social exclusion and mental health problems. The objective of this paper is to analyse NEET youth-related statistics in Europe and distinguish positive initiatives for young people in rural areas of the Baltic countries to encourage positive emotions and willingness to learn. Statistical analysis and case study methods were employed. Data on youth unemployment, NEET youth by age and gender, and poverty and social exclu…

Photon emission in neutral current interactions with nucleons and nuclei

2013

We report on our study of photon emission induced by Enu ~ 1 GeV (anti)neutrino neutral current interactions with nucleons and nuclei. This process is an important background for nu_e appearance oscillation experiments. At the relevant energies, the reaction is dominated by the excitation of the Delta (1232) resonance but there are also non-resonant contributions that, close to threshold, are fully determined by the effective chiral Lagrangian of strong interactions. We have obtained differential and integrated cross section for the (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering and compare them with previous results. Furthermore, we have extended the model to nuclear targets taking into account Fermi m…

Photon emission in neutral-current interactions at intermediate energies

2013

Neutral current photon emission reactions with nucleons and nuclei are studied. These processes are important backgrounds for nu_mu to nu_e (bar(nu)_mu to bar(nu)_e) appearance oscillation experiments where electromagnetic showers instigated by electrons (positrons) and photons are not distinguishable. At intermediate energies, these reactions are dominated by the weak excitation of the Delta(1232) resonance and its subsequent decay into Ngamma There are also non-resonant contributions that, close to threshold, are fully determined by the effective chiral Lagrangian of strong interactions. In addition, we have also included mechanisms mediated by nucleon excitations (N*) from the second res…

s-wave pion-nucleus optical potential

2007

We calculate the s-wave part of the pion-nucleus optical potential using a unitarized chiral approach that has been previously used to simultaneously describe pionic hydrogen and deuterium data as well as low energy pi N scattering in the vacuum. This energy dependent model allows for additional isoscalar parts in the potential from multiple rescattering. We consider Pauli blocking and pion polarization in an asymmetric nuclear matter environment. Also, higher order corrections of the pi N amplitude are included. The model can accommodate the repulsion required by phenomenological fits, though the theoretical uncertainties are bigger than previously thought. At the same time, we also find a…
