The long memory of efficient market

2004

For the London Stock Exchange we demonstrate that the signs of orders obey a long-memory process. The autocorrelation function decays roughly as a power law with an exponent of 0.6, corresponding to a Hurst exponent H = 0.7. This implies that the signs of future orders are quite predictable from the signs of past orders; all else being equal, this would suggest a very strong market inefficiency. We demonstrate, however, that fluctuations in order signs are compensated for by anti-correlated fluctuations in transaction size and liquidity, which are also long-memory processes that act to make the returns whiter. We show that some institutions display long-range memory and others don't.

The paper analyses different remedies used by the Supreme Court to execute judgments of the ECHR in the Italian system. Indeed, the solution adopted by the Constitutional Court - based on the revision - was not satisfactory. Lastly, the Cartabia reform has inserted in the criminal procedure code a new remedy under the competence of the Supreme Court that will pose some practical issues.

Some complexity and approximation results for coupled-tasks scheduling problem according to topology

International audience; We consider the makespan minimization coupled-tasks problem in presence of compatibility constraints with a specified topology. In particular, we focus on stretched coupled-tasks, i.e. coupled-tasks having the same sub-tasks execution time and idle time duration. We study several problems in framework of classic complexity and approximation for which the compatibility graph is bipartite (star, chain,. . .). In such a context, we design some efficient polynomial-time approximation algorithms for an intractable scheduling problem according to some parameters.

Exploiting selective instruction reuse and value prediction in a superscalar architecture

In our previously published research we discovered some very difficult to predict branches, called unbiased branches. Since the overall performance of modern processors is seriously affected by misprediction recovery, especially these difficult branches represent a source of important performance penalties. Our statistics show that about 28% of branches are dependent on critical Load instructions. Moreover, 5.61% of branches are unbiased and depend on critical Loads, too. Effects of target distance on select biomechanical parameters in taekwondo roundhouse kick.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of target distance on temporal and impact force parameters that are important performance factors in taekwondo kicks. Forty-nine taekwondo athletes (age = 24.5 +/- 5.9 years; mass = 79.9 +/- 10.8 kg) were recruited: 13 male experts, 21 male novices, 8 female experts, and 6 female novices. Impact force, reaction time, and execution time were computed. Three-way repeated measure ANOVAs revealed significant 'distance' effect on impact force, reaction time, and execution time (p = 0.001). Although broad information is available regarding the influence of central lesions on action representation, little is known about how peripheral damages affect mental events.
