HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - FROM FUNCTION TO STRATEGIC PARTNER

2013

In most of the organizations, people are now recognized as the vital asset. Their knowledge, skills and abilities must be deployed to the maximum effect if the organization is to become successful. The intangible value of an organization relating to the people it employs and its human resource strategies is gaining recognition and it is generally accepted that this has implications for long-term sustained performance. The recent chances in the economy and the development of new technologies are creating the proper set for a series of other changes regarding the human resource management. The first one refers to the need to respond to the challenges raised by the knowledge workers and the se…

Modulation of the Endocannabinoids N-Arachidonoylethanolamine (AEA) and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) on Executive Functions in Human.

2013

Animal studies point to an implication of the endocannabinoid system on executive functions. In humans, several studies have suggested an association between acute or chronic use of exogenous cannabinoids (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and executive impairments. However, to date, no published reports establish the relationship between endocannabinoids, as biomarkers of the cannabinoid neurotransmission system, and executive functioning in humans. The aim of the present study was to explore the association between circulating levels of plasma endocannabinoids N-arachidonoylethanolamine (AEA) and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) and executive functions (decision making, response inhibition and cognit…

The effects of leadership development on women's career success

2019

This study extends our knowledge of leadership development, specifically Master's in Business Administration (MBA) programs, from a gender perspective. It presents a comprehensive case, women-only development program and conducts an empirical, longitudinal, qualitative study of the effect of one of the program modules, namely, the women-only MBA, on the women's career success. The empirical study focused on self-efficacy mechanisms for explaining the women's appraisals of their changes in abilities affecting their career success during the MBA program. The participants were interviewed twice: once at the beginning of the MBA and then after completing it. A trusting atmosphere, social suppor…

At the heart of the Board: CEO and Chair. Processes, practices and relationships

2019

This doctoral dissertation explores leadership in the dyadic relationship of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Chair of the Board, and in the process leading to CEO dismissal. The study contributes to the literature on relational leadership and the human side of corporate governance and Board work by increasing understanding of the relational practices and processes of the CEO and Chair. A theoretical model is developed of the construction of the CEO-Chair relationship. Additionally, the study makes a methodological contribution by examining researcher-practitioner collaboration during the writing of this study. A qualitative research approach was adopted in the study, with open-end…

Physical activity and aerobic fitness show different associations with brain processes underlying anticipatory selective visuospatial attention in ad…

2021

ABSTRACTUnderlying brain processes of exercise-related benefits on executive functions and the specific contribution of physical activity vs. aerobic fitness are poorly understood, especially during adolescence. We explored whether and how physical activity and aerobic fitness are associated with selective attention and the oscillatory dynamics induced by an anticipatory spatial cue. Further, we studied whether the link between physical exercise level and cognitive control in adolescents is mediated by the task-related oscillatory activity. Magnetoencephalographic alpha oscillations during a modified Posner’s cueing paradigm were measured in 59 adolescents (37 females and 22 males, 12 to 17…

Do opposite ends of same factors underlie life satisfaction vs. depressive symptoms among older people?

2021

Abstract Background Although depressive symptoms are more common among older than younger age groups, life satisfaction tends to remain stable over the life course, possibly because the underlying factors or processes differ. Aim To study whether the factors that increase the likelihood of high life satisfaction also decrease the likelihood of depressive symptoms among older people. Methods The data were a population-based probability sample drawn from community-dwelling people aged 75, 80, and 85 years (n = 1021). Participants’ life satisfaction was measured with the Satisfaction with Life Scale and depressive symptoms with the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Phy…

High testosterone levels and sensitivity to acute stress in perpetrators of domestic violence with low cognitive flexibility and impairments in their…

2013

Hormonal and neuropsychological impairment in intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators could play a role in domestic violence. For characterizing whether there is a specific psychobiological response to stress, participants who had previously been jailed for IPV and controls were compared for testosterone and cortisol levels, tested for 2D:4D ratio (as an indicator of masculinization), and given several trait questionnaires and neuropsychological tests related to executive functions and theory of mind. After performing the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), IPV perpetrators experienced decreases in salivary testosterone (T) levels, a moderate worsening of mood, slight anxiety, and a saliv…

We are witnessing an approximation to the justification of the Executive Power and to the control of administrative action exercised by the Judicial Power, based on the constitutional declarations of articles 103 and 106. We stumble over questions like the definition of the general interests by the…

2020

Healthy aging is associated with deficits in focused and sustained attention and executive functions. However, cognitive training (CT) provides a promising method to counteract these deficits. In the present randomized controlled study, we examined to what extent CT regimes can improve attention, verbal skills, and inhibition capacities. Over a period of 16 weeks, healthy older adults (65 years and older, mean: 70 years) received a trainer-guided multidomain paper-and-pencil and computerized CT. Pre- and post-training, a battery of psychometric tests was applied that measured the critical functions. This study used two control groups: a passive control and an active control group performing…

Efficacy of a Training on Executive Functions in Potentiating Rehabilitation Effects in Stroke Patients

2021

Cognitive impairment after a stroke has a direct impact on patients’ disability. In particular, impairment of Executive Functions (EFs) interferes with re-adaptation to daily life. The aim of this study was to explore whether adding a computer-based training on EFs to an ordinary rehabilitation program, regardless of the specific brain damage and clinical impairment (motor, language, or cognitive), could improve rehabilitation outcomes in patients with stroke. An EF training was designed to have minimal motor and expressive language demands and to be applied to a wide range of clinical conditions. A total of 37 stroke patients were randomly assigned to two groups: a training group, which pe…
