The meaning of dignity in nursing home care as seen by relatives
2014
Background: As part of an ongoing Scandinavian project on the dignity of care for older people, this study is based on ‘clinical caring science’ as a scientific discipline. Clinical caring science examines how ground concepts, axioms and theories are expressed in different clinical contexts. Central notions are caring culture, dignity, at-home-ness, the little extra, non-caring cultures versus caring cultures and ethical context – and climate. Aim and assumptions: This study investigates the individual variations of caring cultures in relation to dignity and how it is expressed in caring acts and ethical contexts. Three assumptions are formulated: (1) the caring culture of nursing homes inf…
On Sets of Words of Rank Two
2019
Given a (finite or infinite) subset X of the free monoid A∗ over a finite alphabet A, the rank of X is the minimal cardinality of a set F such that X⊆ F∗. A submonoid M generated by k elements of A∗ is k-maximal if there does not exist another submonoid generated by at most k words containing M. We call a set X⊆ A∗ primitive if it is the basis of a |X|-maximal submonoid. This extends the notion of primitive word: indeed, w is a primitive set if and only if w is a primitive word. By definition, for any set X, there exists a primitive set Y such that X⊆ Y∗. The set Y is therefore called a primitive root of X. As a main result, we prove that if a set has rank 2, then it has a unique primitive …
Frequency Prediction of Functions
2012
Prediction of functions is one of processes considered in inductive inference. There is a "black box" with a given total function f in it. The result of the inductive inference machine F( ) is expected to be f(n+1). Deterministic and probabilistic prediction of functions has been widely studied. Frequency computation is a mechanism used to combine features of deterministic and probabilistic algorithms. Frequency computation has been used for several types of inductive inference, especially, for learning via queries. We study frequency prediction of functions and show that that there exists an interesting hierarchy of predictable classes of functions.
Probabilistic whereabouts of the "quantum potential"
2011
We review major appearances of the functional expression $\pm \Delta \rho ^{1/2}/ \rho ^{1/2}$ in the theory of diffusion-type processes and in quantum mechanically supported dynamical scenarios. Attention is paid to various manifestations of "pressure" terms and their meaning(s) in-there.
Entangled into Histories or the Narrative Grounds of Multiple Realities
2013
What is the relation between the imaginary and the real constituting our paramount reality? The article approaches the cleavage between fiction and facts by interrogating the genesis of meaning as this genesis is brought about by fictitious works of memory and commemoration. Narrative structures prove to be the intersubjective ground for comprehensive action insofar narration mediates between past and future, and thus gives way to appresent the non-present in collective actions. Further on, narratively we are bound to life world and are indebted to it with an ethical strain of our Self as we gain our identity exactly by narration.
παρακοπὰ, moneda de mala ley en Esquilo
2021
Changing definitions of Asia
2012
The meaning of Asia has changed drastically during the millennia the concept has been in use. Its usage was established in Greek literature 2,500 years ago as a geographic reference to lands inhabited by the Greeks at the Eastern side of the Aegean Sea. Over the ensuing centuries, Asia’s Western boundary was extended to the rivers Don in the North and Nile in the South. At that time, it hardly contained any definite political or civilisational meanings. These were added to the concept in 1730 in a kind of Swedish–Russian cooperation when the Urals were redefined to form the boundary between Europe and Asia, the former starting to represent progress, and the latter its opposite. This situati…
Astrophysik contra Astronomie
1981
[Astrophysics contra astronomy] means the displacement of astrometry and stellar astronomy as the main and solely conceded branches of astronomy by the new astrophysics. This displacement started with the introduction of spectroscopic and photometric methods of observation in astronomy founded by J. C. F. Zoellner and W. Huggins in the late 1850s. It was Zoellner, too, who gave the methodical and intrumental foundations of the new branch called consciously [Astrophysik] by him, because it gives insight into the [physical constitution] of the celestial bodies - whereas the traditional astronomy (or: astrophysics according to the older meaning) had been studying only the motions of the stars …
A Reluctant Hero: Hannes Kolehmainen and the Politics of Sporting Fame in Finland
2012
A multiple Olympic champion and pioneer of long-distance running in Finland, Hannes Kolehmainen migrated to the United States after having triumphed at the 1912 Stockholm games. In spite of his working-class credentials that had led to tension prior to Stockhom, the Finnish bourgeois sport authorities adopted him as their hero and literally bought him back from America in the 1920s, soon after Finland had gained independence. Subsequently, a number of prominent observers and scholars have claimed that Kolehmainen's running prowess not only brought the Finnish people together but also contributed to Finland's quest for independence. This essay takes a critical look at the hegemonic understan…
The Rise and Fall of the Aizjomi Landscape†
2012
Jurmalciems, an ancient fishing-farming village on the Baltic Sea coast in southwestern Latvia, provides the setting for this article. In this setting I focus on the notion of dwelling in a landscape that comes to reflect the residents' lifeworld. The holistic notion of "dwelling" incorporates the complex and multiple dimensions of human life spent in the physical landscape, where time and space, nature and culture, are bound together and where local and macrolevel historical and social circumstances determine them both. This study is my attempt to understand a visible reality: the aizjonii landscape that is etched into the topography in the form of fields carved and embosomed into sandbank…
