Impacto del viaje de Freire a Valencia
2021
In the publications of Freire's trip, errors are detected that makes invisible both its impact and those who made it possible. An analysis of the documentation, 6 interviews with people who made the trip possible, 6 with professionals and 2 with family members in Valencia who are transforming their schools and 2 dialogical observations have been carried out. The results make it clear: 1) Those who proposed this trip both to Freire and to the Regional Ministry are Flecha and Jesús Gomez 'Pato'. 2) The reason is the approval by the Valencian Parliament of the Law on Adult Education, whose 'Report and draft for its preliminary project' had been entrusted to Flecha, who was hired to elaborate i…
Términos persas en escritos anatómicos árabes
1995
The. A. explains the meaning of some Iranian technical words, which appear in anatomical Arab works. They are interesting, not only because they are nearly unknown, but also because they are an evidence of the influence of Iranian culture on the rise of Arabian scientific medicine, and so an encouragement to further investigation on this subject.
The Moments Which Were Never Lost
2011
From faraway Hyperborea, the North wind blows, bringing tidings from a blissful northern people in whose very being there resides a smile. The joyful days of Finnishness were left behind in Karelia, in its beloved song-lands. It is an Arcadia that still lives on in memories, passed on, in the form of stories, from one generation to the next. Yet in those unbreakable links of longing there lurks a danger: a constant temptation to deprecate and even dismiss the present moment. If your sense of the real, of the presently passing moment of the “now” is lost, then who bears the responsibility for that? An idealization of the past results in time deception, a chronological fraud where your entire…

Marriage Guidance, Women and the Problem(s) of Returning Soldiers in Finland, 1944-1946
2017
When former military chaplains began to give marital guidance to troubled couples after the end of hostilities with the Soviet Union (1941–1944) in Finland, new information about the causes and experiences of marital problems and divorces emerged during guidance sessions. Even lengthy marriages were seen to be burdened due to the stress of reunion and men’s wartime infidelity, increased inclination to drinking and aggressive behaviour. The article discusses the meaning and construction of marital expectations with respect to the development of post-war marital dissolution, and argues that wives in particular tried to adjust their marital expectations in accordance with the general developme…
Resisting Immigration Detention
2016
The aim of this article is to provide a normative analysis of the ways in which immigrants resist immigration detention. After having outlined (in Section 2) some general features that make immigration detention a rather abnormal condition for human beings to be kept in, I distinguish three main forms of resistance to it: institutionalized, non-institutionalized, and anti-institutional. I first spell out, in Section 3, some individual characteristics of these forms of resistance. Then (in Sections 4 and 5), using Italy as my test case, I suggest, for each of these forms, an interpretation of their normative meaning (that is, their meaning according to both the relevant legal rules and their…
Learning in sport : from life skills to existential learning
2020
Youth sport is habitually promoted as an important context for learning that contributes to a person’s broader development beyond sport-specific skills. A growing body of research in this area has operated within a life skills discourse that focuses on useful, positive and decontextualised skills in the production of successful and adaptive citizens. In this paper, we argue that the ideological discourse of life skills, underpinned by ideas about sport-based positive youth development, has unduly narrowed the research on learning in sport to only what is deemed functional, teachable, and economically productive. After considering the problems associated with the currently dominant life skil…
From Thinking to Raging: Reflexes of Indo-European *men- Polysemy in Homer
2020
This paper aims at investigating the semantic value of the verb μαίνομαι “to rage, to be furious” in Homeric Greek, in order to clarify the striking semantic relationship between the common ‘irrational’ meaning of the verb and the original ‘rational’ meaning of the Indo-European root *men- “to think”, to which the verb traces back. The corresponding words for μαίνομαι in other Indo-European languages (e.g. OInd. mányatē; Av. mainyeite; OIr. (do)moiniur; OCS mъnjo; Lit. miniu) can be translated as “to think”, thus showing an opposite meaning. From a textual analysis of all the occurrences of μαίνομαι in the Iliad and the Odyssey, the study aims at finding semantic traces of the original mean…
ADT implementation and completion by induction from examples
1991
There exists a fast algorithm [2] for inductive synthesis of terminating and ground confluent term rewriting systems from samples. The principles of this algorithm and the methodology of its use for implementation and completion of abstract data types are described.
Tracing Curiosity with a Value Perspective
2017
Several have challenged the idea that educating is a neutral endeavour. Following this line of thought, this article intends to examine a common concept often taken for granted: curiosity. The aim of the article is to show how curiosity is constructed as a value-loaded notion by tracing its understandings in an early-childhood-education-and-care (ECEC) context from a value perspective. Four official ECEC documents from different organisational levels will be analysed. Informed by qualitative content analysis with a concept-driven strategy, the document analysis seeks to establish connections between the notion of curiosity and prominent value fields in ECEC, such as competence, democracy an…
