Sense-Making, Meaningfulness, and Instrumental Music Education

2020

The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the nature of "meaning" and "meaningfulness" in the context of instrumental music education. By doing so, I propose to expand the ways in which instrumental music educators conceive their mission and the ways in which we may instill meaning in people's lives. Traditionally, pursuits of philosophical deliberation have claimed that meaningfulness comes from either personal happiness (e.g., Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill) or an impersonal sense of duty (e.g., St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Immanuel Kant). However, philosopher Wolf (2010) criticizes these positions in favor of a broader perspective, one that arises from understanding that …

An existential perspective on meaning, spirituality and authenticity in athletic careers

2014

This research examines athletes’ career paths and reflections of meaning in their sporting practices through an existential psychological lens. Through notions of spirituality and authenticity, we examined how competitive sport practices and bodily movement gain meaning, and often fundamentally shift meaning, in athletes’ lives. Reflective writings with a follow-up from 10 athletes were interpreted through an existential-narrative analysis. The results suggest that while the early years of sport practice are most often characterised as highly enjoyable experiences, for some, the later career development involves existential challenges such as value conflicts, losing a sense of authenticity,…

Communication of Loneliness Emotions in the Online Vlogs and Their Moral Value

2019

Using the method of visual narrative analysis and the grounded theory, the answers are searched for the questions—what are the most typical emotional experiences that go with the representation of loneliness in the public digital communication and how the modern communication technologies are enabling these representations? The analysis allows to understand what has been the most desired for the young people and what is wished but not acquired (or lost) subject or experience which resulted in the loneliness. Finally, the attention is paid to the loneliness performance’s possible role in creating a digital culture and making moral sense to existential and difficult subjective experience whic…

Human Reaction Times: Linking Individual and Collective Behaviour Through Physics Modeling

2021

An individual’s reaction time data to visual stimuli have usually been represented in Experimental Psychology by means of an ex-Gaussian function. In most previous works, researchers have mainly aimed at finding a meaning for the parameters of the ex-Gaussian function which are known to correlate with cognitive disorders. Based on the recent evidence of correlations between the reaction time series to visual stimuli produced by different individuals within a group, we go beyond and propose a Physics-inspired model to represent the reaction time data of a coetaneous group of individuals. In doing so, a Maxwell–Boltzmann-like distribution appeared, the same distribution as for the velocities …

Flows of information and meaning: a vocabulary approach to integrated thinking and reporting

2020

PurposeIntegrated reporting (IR) is increasingly becoming a practice useful not only for accountability but also for managerial purposes because of its potential role as a signifying practice for integrated thinking (IT). In this perspective, this paper aims to explore which of the objects that are represented in integrated reports provide materiality and common understanding to the concept of IT for its effective implementation within organizations.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is based on a vocabulary approach for interpreting the texts of integrated reports as systems of words that are able to provide meaning for a common understanding of the concept of IT. In particular, by focu…

PRE-SCHOOLER QUESTIONS ENCOURAGING COGNITION

2018

When pre-schooler learns language, development of his cognitive processes changes, ability to classify and generalise rises. Child’s needs and interests encourage him to ask, answer, think, act. Word meanings are used and sought in various speech situations, especially when expressing all known, unknown, understood, not understood verbally. Asking and answering questions requires certain vocabulary, ability to formulate thoughts and find contact with communication partner in dialogue. Aim: study of the pre-schooler question content, influence thereof on formation of cognitive interests. Methods and materials: analysis of theoretical literature, observations, conversations with children, wri…

Exploring minerality of Burgundy Chardonnay wines: a sensory approach with wine experts and trained panellists

2013

Background and Aims The use of minerality as a wine descriptor has increased in the last few years. Minerality always suggests high quality and evokes a link between wine and the soil. The sensory meaning of minerality, however, is not yet clearly understood. The present study was designed to understand how wine experts conceptualise minerality and to explore whether they can judge wine minerality in a consensual way. Methods and Results Experts carried out an orthonasal free sorting task on 16 Chardonnay wines. Afterwards, they rated their mineral character according to two conditions: orthonasally and on the palate while wearing a nose-clip. The experts also answered a questionnaire in wh…

The Importance of Recovery from Work in Intensified Working Life

2021

This chapter focuses on intensified working life via the intensified job demands (IJDs) model from the perspective of recovery from work by paying particular attention to the potentially mediating and buffering roles of recovery in the linkages between IJDs and their consequences. In empirical analyses, we examined the buffering role of psychological detachment from work during off-job time in the relationship between intensified job demands and job performance and meaning of work. We found that high psychological detachment, as a recovery experience, buffered against work intensification over time in relation to job performance and meaning of work. Thus, good detachment from work during of…

Know Beyond Seeing: Combining Computer Vision with Semantic Reasoning

2018

International audience; To date, computer vision systems are limited to extract the digital data of what the cameras "see". However, the meaning of what they observe could be greatly enhanced by considering the environment and common-sense knowledge. A new approach to combine computer vision with semantic modeling has been developed. This approach extracts the knowledge from images and uses it to perform real-time reasoning according to the contextual information, events of interest and logic rules. The reasoning with image knowledge allows protecting the privacy of the users, to overcome some problems of computer vision such as occlusion and missed detections and to offer services such as …
