Transhumanismo, discurso transgénero y digitalismo: ¿exigencias de justicia o efectos del espíritu de abstracción?

2021

There are three great existential challenges for the human being in the present time: transhumanism, transgender discourse and digitalism. These three phenomena are enormously powerful today because they are driven by two overwhelming forces which, however, tend to collide opposing each other. On the one hand, they are encouraged by a demand for justice and emancipation, which seeks to end deeply rooted forms of discrimination and to seek effective equality among all human beings. On the other hand, they are sustained on a philosophical basis that denies the intelligibility of reality and the teleological condition of human existence, proposing instead, as the only guide to orient human lif…

Dignity in relationships and existence in nursing homes’ cultures

2022

Introduction: Expressions of dignity as a clinical phenomenon in nursing homes as expressed by caregivers were investigated. A coherence could be detected between the concepts and phenomena of existence and dignity in relationships and caring culture as a context. A caring culture is interpreted by caregivers as the meaning-making of what is accepted or not in the ward culture. Background: The rationale for the connection between existence and dignity in relationships and caring culture is that suffering is a part of existence, as well as compassion in relieving suffering, and ontological interdependency. Aim: To describe different expressions of dignity in relationships and existence in co…

A Reluctant Hero: Hannes Kolehmainen and the Politics of Sporting Fame in Finland

2012

A multiple Olympic champion and pioneer of long-distance running in Finland, Hannes Kolehmainen migrated to the United States after having triumphed at the 1912 Stockholm games. In spite of his working-class credentials that had led to tension prior to Stockhom, the Finnish bourgeois sport authorities adopted him as their hero and literally bought him back from America in the 1920s, soon after Finland had gained independence. Subsequently, a number of prominent observers and scholars have claimed that Kolehmainen's running prowess not only brought the Finnish people together but also contributed to Finland's quest for independence. This essay takes a critical look at the hegemonic understan…

The Moments Which Were Never Lost

2011

From faraway Hyperborea, the North wind blows, bringing tidings from a blissful northern people in whose very being there resides a smile. The joyful days of Finnishness were left behind in Karelia, in its beloved song-lands. It is an Arcadia that still lives on in memories, passed on, in the form of stories, from one generation to the next. Yet in those unbreakable links of longing there lurks a danger: a constant temptation to deprecate and even dismiss the present moment. If your sense of the real, of the presently passing moment of the “now” is lost, then who bears the responsibility for that? An idealization of the past results in time deception, a chronological fraud where your entire…

Learning in sport : from life skills to existential learning

2020

Youth sport is habitually promoted as an important context for learning that contributes to a person’s broader development beyond sport-specific skills. A growing body of research in this area has operated within a life skills discourse that focuses on useful, positive and decontextualised skills in the production of successful and adaptive citizens. In this paper, we argue that the ideological discourse of life skills, underpinned by ideas about sport-based positive youth development, has unduly narrowed the research on learning in sport to only what is deemed functional, teachable, and economically productive. After considering the problems associated with the currently dominant life skil…

Tracing Curiosity with a Value Perspective

2017

Several have challenged the idea that educating is a neutral endeavour. Following this line of thought, this article intends to examine a common concept often taken for granted: curiosity. The aim of the article is to show how curiosity is constructed as a value-loaded notion by tracing its understandings in an early-childhood-education-and-care (ECEC) context from a value perspective. Four official ECEC documents from different organisational levels will be analysed. Informed by qualitative content analysis with a concept-driven strategy, the document analysis seeks to establish connections between the notion of curiosity and prominent value fields in ECEC, such as competence, democracy an…

Irži Vajlʹ i ego hrabraâ borʹba za sohranenie hudožestvennoj pravdivosti i čelovečnosti na fone nacistskoj i stalinskoj diktatury

2018

The study deals with the personality and the work of Jiří Weil, the writer, whose Jewish roots and enthusiastic admiration for the Soviet Russia significantly marked his life before the war, the occupation in Protectorate, and also after the war. In the background of two criminal totalitarian regimes there are analysed inspirational streams and influences that shaped the creative groundswell of novels – Moscow – Border, Life with a Star and Mendelssohn is on the Roof. Among others wider attention is given to a brief description of the development of the Weil´s artistic methods and comparison of different points of view of the contemporary and present literary criticism on the listed works. …

La variación formal de los cuantificadores en catalán: estudio diacrónico (siglos XV‒XX)

2020

AbstractThis article studies the formal variation of the existential quantifiers u/un (‘one; a, an’), algú/algun (‘someone; some’), ningú/ningun (‘no one, anyone; any’) and the distributive universal quantifier cada u/cada un (‘everyone’) in Catalan. The research is based on an extensive diachronic corpus of texts written between the 15th and 20th centuries. The author classifies the syntactic structures of these quantifiers and analyses their meaning and formal vacillations: apocopated form (without ‑n) vs. non-apocopated form (with ‑n). Although hesitations tend to disappear gradually during the period under analysis, the uses of these quantifiers change in Catalan dialects. In fact, dist…

2019

Objective: The EORTC QOL Group has recently completed the cross-cultural development and validation of a standalone measure of spiritual well-being (SWB) for cancer patients receiving palliative care: the EORTC QLQ-SWB32. The measure includes four scales: Relationships with Others, Relationship with Self, Relationship with Someone or Something Greater, and Existential, plus a Global-SWB item. This paper reports on further research investigating relationships between sex, age and SWB for patients receiving palliative care for cancer—adjusting for other socio-demographic, clinical and function variables, including WHO performance status and EORTC QLQ-C15-PAL emotional and physical function sc…

LIVING LEARNING FROM NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE

2017

The main aim of the article is to clarify what changes a near death experience (NDE) brings in the living learning process of an adult and in his attitude towards it. The existential experience, and the perceptions about life and death are considered as important self-realization and development factors in the learning process. Although currently there is no single scientific position with respect to NDE, the inner experience of the humans who have survived clinical death and as a result of that had personality change cannot be denied. In the context of pedagogy according to the phenomenological scientific methodological tradition NDE gives its contribution both in the procedure of cognitio…
