The use of the Emotional-Object Recognition as an assay to assess learning and memory associated to an aversive stimulus in rodents

2016

Abstract Background Emotionally salient experiences induce the formation of explicit memory traces, besides eliciting automatic or implicit emotional memory in rodents. This study aims at investigating the implementation of a novel task for studying the formation of limbic memory engrams as a result of the acquisition- and retrieval- of fear-conditioning – biased declarative memory traces, measured by animal discrimination of an “emotional-object”. Moreover, by using this new method we investigated the potential interactions between stimulation of cannabinoid transmission and integration of emotional information and cognitive functioning. New method The Emotional-Object Recognition task is …

Conceptual implicit memory: a developmental study.

1995

The widely accepted standpoint that implicit memory emerges earlier in development than explicit memory, and is more stable from childhood to adult age, is based on experimental data essentially collected in perceptual tasks. The present study was aimed at investigating whether these findings still hold when a more conceptual task is used. We compared the performance of children at two age levels (2nd and 4th grades) on a category-exemplar generation task. Results showed that performances of the two groups were comparable when the target items were typical of their categories, as in Experiment 2, and for a subset of the items in Experiment 1. However, the older children outperformed the you…

Explicit polynomial solutions of fourth order linear elliptic Partial Differential Equations for boundary based smooth surface generation

2011

We present an explicit polynomial solution method for surface generation. In this case the surface in question is characterized by some boundary configuration whereby the resulting surface conforms to a fourth order linear elliptic Partial Differential Equation, the Euler–Lagrange equation of a quadratic functional defined by a norm. In particular, the paper deals with surfaces generated as explicit Bézier polynomial solutions for the chosen Partial Differential Equation. To present the explicit solution methodologies adopted here we divide the Partial Differential Equations into two groups namely the orthogonal and the non-orthogonal cases. In order to demonstrate our methodology we discus…

A group-theory method to find stationary states in nonlinear discrete symmetry systems

2010

In the field of nonlinear optics, the self-consistency method has been applied to searching optical solitons in different media. In this paper, we generalize this method to other systems, adapting it to discrete symmetry systems by using group theory arguments. The result is a new technique that incorporates symmetry concepts into the iterative procedure of the self-consistency method, that helps the search of symmetric stationary solutions. An efficient implementation of this technique is also presented, which restricts the computational work to a reduced section of the entire domain and is able to find different types of solutions by specifying their symmetry properties. As a practical ap…

DEGENERATE MATRIX METHOD FOR SOLVING NONLINEAR SYSTEMS OF DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

1998

Degenerate matrix method for numerical solving nonlinear systems of ordinary differential equations is considered. The method is based on an application of special degenerate matrix and usual iteration procedure. The method, which is connected with an implicit Runge‐Kutta method, can be simply realized on computers. An estimation for the error of the method is given. First Published Online: 14 Oct 2010

Adjoint-based sampling methods for electromagnetic scattering

2010

In this paper we investigate the efficient realization of sampling methods based on solutions of certain adjoint problems. This adjoint approach does not require the explicit knowledge of the Green's function for the background medium, and allows us to sample for all points and all dipole directions simultaneously; thus, several limitations of standard sampling methods are relieved. A detailed derivation of the adjoint approach is presented for two electromagnetic model problems, but the framework can be applied to a much wider class of problems. We also discuss a relation of the adjoint sampling method to standard backprojection algorithms, and present numerical tests that illustrate the e…

An IMEX-Scheme for Pricing Options under Stochastic Volatility Models with Jumps

2014

Partial integro-differential equation (PIDE) formulations are often preferable for pricing options under models with stochastic volatility and jumps, especially for American-style option contracts. We consider the pricing of options under such models, namely the Bates model and the so-called stochastic volatility with contemporaneous jumps (SVCJ) model. The nonlocality of the jump terms in these models leads to matrices with full matrix blocks. Standard discretization methods are not viable directly since they would require the inversion of such a matrix. Instead, we adopt a two-step implicit-explicit (IMEX) time discretization scheme, the IMEX-CNAB scheme, where the jump term is treated ex…

Does Pathological Aging Affect Musical Learning and Memory?

2012

the effect of pathological aging on explicit memory is very well documented, but relatively few studies have addressed this issue in the musical domain. To examine learning and consolidation of melodies, we designed a melodic recognition task involving immediate and delayed recognition of 16 target melodies (8 familiar and 8 unfamiliar). Seventeen patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 17 age-matched controls were tested. During the initial presentation of the targets, the participant had to decide whether or not the melody was familiar. Recognition was tested after one and three presentations of the target melodies using a yes/no recognition paradigm. Delayed recogniti…

Modulating Long Term Memory at Late-Encoding Phase: An rTMS Study

2021

Despite a huge effort of the scientific community, the functioning of Long-Term Memory (LTM) processes is still debated and far from being elucidated. Functional and neurophysiological data point to an involvement of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC) in both encoding and retrieval phases. However, the recently proposed Explicit/Implicit Memory Encoding and Retrieval (EIMER) model proposes that LTM at the encoding phase consists of anatomically and chronologically different sub-phases. On this basis, we aimed to investigate the role of right DLPFC during a late-encoding phase by means of low-frequency rTMS. Thirty right-handed healthy subjects were divided into three experimental groups…

Aging effects and feasibility of statistical learning tasks across modalities

2021

Knowledge on statistical learning (SL) in healthy elderly is scarce. Theoretically, it is not clear whether aging affects modality-specific and/or domain-general learning mechanisms. Practically, there is a lack of research on simplified SL tasks, which would ease the burden of testing in clinical populations. Against this background, we conducted two experiments across three modalities (auditory, visual and visuomotor) in a total of 93 younger and older adults. In Experiment 1, SL was induced in all modalities. Aging effects appeared in the tasks relying on an explicit posttest to assess SL. We hypothesize that declines in domain-general processes that predominantly modulate explicit learn…
