Fuzzy Fusion in Multimodal Biometric Systems

2007

Multimodal authentication systems represent an emerging trend for information security. These systems could replace conventional mono-modal biometric methods using two or more features for robust biometric authentication tasks. They employ unique combinations of measurable physical characteristics: fingerprint, facial features, iris of the eye, voice print, hand geometry, vein patterns, and so on. Since these traits are hardly imitable by other persons, the aim of these multibiometric systems is to achieve a high reliability to determine or verify person's identity. In this paper a multimodal biometric system using two different fingerprints is proposed. The matching module integrates fuzzy…

A SIMPLE SURGICAL-MEDICAL PROTOCOL TO CARRY OUT DENTAL EXTRACTIONS IN PATIENTS IN THERAPY WITH BISPHOSPHONATES: OUR EXPERIENCE

2014

Aim. Bisphosphonate Related OsteoNecrosis of the Jaw (BRONJ) is described as an adverse event related to amino-bisphosphonate (NBP) therapy, occurring as a result of reduced bone resorption and bone turnover. One of the most significant risk factor associated with the onset of BRONJ is tooth extraction even if not yet supported by definitive scientific evidences. The aim of this study is to propose a simple surgical/medical protocol to carry out dental extractions in patients in therapy with NBPs in order to minimize the BRONJ risk. Materials and methods. Eighty-eight patients currently or previously treated with NBPs were selected for extractions of compromised teeth. Patients were divided…

Histological findings of osteonecrosis spotted prior to tooth extractions. Should we consider tooth extraction still the main trigger event?

2021

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is an adverse drug reaction described as the progressive destruction and death of bone that affects the mandible and maxilla of patients exposed to the treatment with medications known to increase the risk of disease, in the absence of a previous radiation treatment. Tooth extraction often precedes the manifestation of ONJ; indeed, it is sometimes called trigger event and it have also been considered as risk factors for the onset of ONJ. As a consequence, some of the guidelines recommend avoiding tooth extractions in patients at risk of ONJ; however, a growing body of evidence indicates that dental/periodontal infection prior to extraction, rather than dental …

Which factors influence orthodontists in their decision to extract? A questionnaire survey

2019

Background To evaluate the relative influence of different criteria in the choice between extraction and nonextraction treatment in current orthodontics, and to assess how the percentage of extractions has evolved over time. Material and methods Pre-treatment records (panoramic radiograph, lateral cephalogram, study casts and photographs) of fourteen cases in permanent dentition (adult or adolescent) with class I molar relationship and moderate anterior crowding were evaluated by 28 orthodontists. For each case, each orthodontist filled out a questionnaire reporting his treatment plan proposal (extraction or nonextraction) and the importance of specific parameters in his decision-making pro…

Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Fresh Apple Pomace by Different Non-Conventional Techniques

2021

Red Delicious apple pomace was produced at laboratory scale with a domestic blender and different non-conventional extraction techniques were performed to isolate phenolic compounds, such as ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), ultraturrax extraction (UTE), accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and pulsed electric field (PEF) extraction pre-treatment. Total phenolic content (TPC) was determined by Folin–Ciocalteu assay. Phloridzin, the main phenolic compound in apples, was determined by chromatographic analysis Q-TOF-LC/MS. The results obtained with these techniques were compared in order to identify the most efficient method to recover polyphenols. The highest value of TPC (1062.92 ± 59.80…

Factors influencing orthodontic treatment time

2021
