Delineation of the 3p14.1p13 microdeletion associated with syndromic distal limb contractures

2014

International audience; Distal limb contractures (DLC) represent a heterogeneous clinical and genetic condition. Overall, 20–25% of the DLC are caused by mutations in genes encoding the muscle contractile apparatus. Large interstitial deletions of the 3p have already been diagnosed by standard chromosomal analysis, but not associated with a specific phenotype. We report on four patients with syndromic DLC presenting with a de novo 3p14.1p13 micro-deletion. The clinical features associated multiple contractures, feeding problems, developmental delay, and intellectual disability. Facial dysmorphism was constant with low-set posteriorly rotated ears and blepharophimosis. Review of previously r…

Sexually dimorphic tegumental gland openings in Laniatores (Arachnida, Opiliones), with new data on 23 species

2009

International audience; Sexually dimorphic glands often release sexual pheromones both in vertebrates and invertebrates. Species of Laniatores (Arachnida, Opiliones) seem to depend on chemical communication but few studies have addressed this topic. In this study, we review the literature for the Phalangida and present new data for 23 species of Laniatores. In 16 taxa, we found previously undescribed sexually dimorphic glandular openings on the femur, patella, metatarsus, and tarsus of legs I and metatarsus of legs III and IV. For the other species, we provide scanning electron micrographs of previously undescribed sexually dimorphic setae and pegs located on swollen regions of the legs. We…

Voila, a New Drosophila Courtship Variant that Affects the Nervous System: Behavioral, Neural, and Genetic Characterization

1998

InDrosophila melanogaster, a specificPGAL4transposon induces theVoila1genetic variant and produces multiple phenotypes. HomozygousVoila1/1flies rarely reach adulthood, whereas heterozygousVoila1/+adult males show strong bisexual behavior. Males with a single copy ofVoila1driving the feminizing transgeneUAS-transformershow very reduced sexual activity but no overall effect on their behavior.Voila1is specifically expressed in the nervous system. In the CNS, it is expressed mainly in the mushroom bodies and, to a lesser extent, in the antennal lobes. In the peripheral nervous system, GAL4 expression is almost entirely restricted to the gustatory sensilla. Using chromosomal deficiencies, the be…

The impact of irreversible image data compression on post-processing algorithms in computed tomography

2020

PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the influence of irreversible image compression at varying levels on image post-processing algorithms (3D volume rendering of angiographs, computer-assisted detection of lung nodules, segmentation and volumetry of liver lesions, and automated evaluation of functional cardiac imaging) in computed tomography (CT). METHODS: Uncompressed CT image data (30 angiographs of the lower limbs, 38 lung exams, 20 liver exams and 30 cardiac exams) were anonymized and subsequently compressed using the JPEG2000 algorithm with compression ratios of 8:1, 10:1, and 15:1. Volume renderings of CT angiographies obtained from compressed and uncompressed data were compared using objec…

Morphological and Postural Changes in the Foot during Pregnancy and Puerperium: A Longitudinal Study

2021

The aim of this study is to observe the morphological and postural changes to the foot that take place during pregnancy and the puerperium. Method: In this descriptive, observational, longitudinal study, we analysed 23 pregnant women, with particular attention to morphological and postural aspects of the foot, at three time points during and after pregnancy: in weeks 9–13 of gestation, weeks 32–35 of gestation and weeks 4–6 after delivery. The parameters considered were changes in foot length, the Foot Posture Index (FPI) and the Hernández Corvo Index, which were analysed using a pedigraph and taking into account the Body Mass Index (BMI). The same procedure was conducted in each review. Re…

Periodic limb movements during sleep and blood pressure changes in sleep apnoea: Data from the European Sleep Apnoea Database

2020

International audience; Background and objective: OSA and PLMS are known to induce acute BP swings during sleep. Our current study aimed to address the independent effect of PLMS on BP in an unselected OSA patient cohort. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis included 1487 patients (1110 males, no previous hypertension diagnosis or treatment, mean age: 52.5 years, mean BMI: 30.5 kg/m2 ) with significant OSA (defined as AHI ≥ 10) recruited from the European Sleep Apnoea Cohort. Patients underwent overnight PSG. Patients were stratified into two groups: patients with significant PLMS (PLMSI > 25 events/hour of sleep) and patients without significant PLMS (PLMSI < 25 events/hour of sleep). SBP…

Antenna Tapering Strategy for Near-Field Enhancement Optimization in Terahertz Gold Nanocavities

2019

Plasmonic nanoantennas (NAs) have received a growing attention in recent years due to their ability to confine light on sub-wavelength dimensions [1]. More recently, this property has been exploited in the terahertz (THz) frequency range (0.1–10 THz) for enhanced sensing and spectroscopy [2], as well as for more fundamental investigations [3]. These applications typically require high local electric fields that can be achieved by concentrating THz radiation into deeply sub-wavelength volumes located at the NAs extremities. However, the achievable near-field enhancement values are severely limited by the poor resonance quality factor of traditional rod-shaped THz NAs. Unlike what is commonly…

Quantitative assessment of stereotyped and challenged locomotion after lesion of the striatum: a 3D kinematic study in rats.

2009

Background Although the striatum is in position to regulate motor function, the role of the structure in locomotor behaviour is poorly understood. Therefore, a detailed analysis of locomotion- and obstacle avoidance-related parameters was performed after unilateral lesion of the striatum in rats. Methods and Results Using the three dimensional motion capture technology, kinematics of walking and clearing obstacles, head and body orientation were analyzed before and up to 60 days after the lesion. Recordings were performed in treadmill running rats with or without obstacles attached to the treadmill belt. The lesion, which was induced by the direct injection of the mitochondrial toxin malona…

Prevalence and Risk Factors of PAD among Patients with Elevated ABI

2008

ObjectivesTo assess the prevalence and clinical significance of elevated ankle-brachial index (ABI) in patients referred to vascular consultation.DesignRetrospective clinical study.Material and methodsIn 1,762 patients referred with a suspicion of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), ABI and toe brachial index (TBI) were measured by photoplethysmography. ABI≥1.3 was considered falsely elevated and TBI<0.60 was the diagnostic criterion for PAD.ResultsThe prevalence of elevated ABI was 8.4% and that of PAD among these patients 62.2%. PAD was significantly more prevalent among subjects with severe symptoms (rest pain, ulcers or gangrene) than in those with intermittent claudication (83.8% and 45…

The direct effect of magnetic tape ® on pain and lower-extremity blood flow in subjects with low-back pain: A randomized clinical trial

2021

Low-back pain has a high impact on the world population, and solutions are in demand. The behavior of specific physiological processes has been modified using magnetic fields, whether for pain relief, bone consolidation, or improvement of vascularization. The use of tape with magnetic properties could help in these cases. A double-blind randomized clinical trial was designed to use Magnetic Tape® versus placebo Kinesio tape. Blood flow variables were evaluated using pulsed power Doppler ultrasound. Resistance index, pulsatility index, systolic velocity, and diastolic velocity were measured. The pressure pain threshold was measured using algometry in 22 subjects. The results reveal significa…
