Significance of butterfly eyespots as an anti-predator device in ground-based and aerial attacks

Many butterfly genera are characterised by the presence of marginal eyespots on their wings. One hypothesis to account for an occurrence of eyespots is that these wing pattern elements are partly the outcome of visual selection by predators. Bicyclus anynana (Satyrinae) has underside spotting on its wings but there is also a seasonal form in which the eyespots are reduced in size or totally absent. This natural variation gives us a useful tool to test the hypothesis that marginal eyespot patterns can decoy the attacking predator by, at least sometimes, diverting attack from vital body parts to the edges of the wings. Novel triplet of flexor muscles in the posterior tentacles of the snail, Helix pomatia.

The anatomy of three novel flexor muscles in the posterior tentacles of Helix pomatia is described. The muscles originate from the ventral side of the sensory pad and are anchored at different sites in the base of the tentacle stem. The muscles span the tentacle and always take the length of the stem which depends on the rate of tentacle protrusion indicating that the muscles are both contractile and extremely stretchable. The three anchoring points at the base of the stem determine three space axes along which the contraction of a muscle or the synchronous contraction of the muscles can move the tentacle in space.

A partir de Platón se desarrolla en la reflexión gramatical y filosófica griega la idea de que ciertos vocablos tienen un origen onomatopéyico, tomándose como modelo de su uso (tanto por su conveniencia como por su condena) su aparición en el epos homérico. Mientras la filosofía vinculará tales palabras, entendidas como onomatopeyas, al origen del lenguaje, los autores de poética y gramática las estudiarán como elementos significativos en la valoración estética de la poesía. La doctrina griega sobre la onomatopeya pasará, a su vez, a las letras latinas.

El objeto de este trabajo es el análisis de las ?tres coronas? que llevan los reyes Úter y Arturo, como símbolo de su extraordinario poder, en el Baladro del sabio Merlín (versiones de 1498 y 1535) . Se estudia el tratamiento en ambas a fin de comprender cómo pudieron ser entendidas por el público hispánico de finales del siglo XV y del primer tercio del segle XVI.

The article intends to make a contribution of new documentary references, from the notarial funds of the Valencian archives, in which news about parish crosses and Lignum Crucis from the silversmith center of Valencia during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries are collected.
