Architetture del divenire. Innovazioni contemporanee/Emerging Architecture. Contemporary Innovations (presentazione di Giuseppe Pellitteri) - Quadern…

2014

Segregation in Drying Binary Colloidal Droplets

2019

When a colloidal suspension droplet evaporates from a solid surface, it leaves a characteristic deposit in the contact region. These deposits are common and important for many applications in printing, coating, or washing. By the use of superamphiphobic surfaces as a substrate, the contact area can be reduced so that evaporation is almost radially symmetric. While drying, the droplets maintain a nearly perfect spherical shape. Here, we exploit this phenomenon to fabricate supraparticles from bidisperse colloidal aqueous suspensions. The supraparticles have a core-shell morphology. The outer region is predominantly occupied by small colloids, forming a close-packed crystalline structure. Tow…

Trade-off Performance of Optical Nanoantennas for Solar Energy Harvesting Applications

2019

In this paper, the optimum behaviour of optical nanoantennas, in terms of impedance, directivity, available power, and field enhancement, at a resonance frequency of about 350 THz, will be shown. Optimum configurations are obtained by varying nanoantennas geometry in order to maximize the available power, enhancing the electric field in gap proximity and so the absorptivity. Moreover, the simulation results for aluminum nanoantennas on a three-layers substrate, will be reported, and a trade-off performance comparison among different antennas will be discussed. This study can guide both the engineering and the fabrication of plasmonic nanoantennas.

Di seta et oro. Antichi tessuti nelle chiese di Acireale

2021

This book dedicated to the ancient silk and gold fabrics of the church of Acireale in Sicily, is a text prepared by Fabio Francesco Grippaldi and Maurizio Vitella within the European project H2020 Silknow: Weaving our past into the future (European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 769504). It presents a large collection of textile artefacts, largely unpublished, in use in the basilicas of Acireale. The sacred vestments analyzed both in the introductory essays and in the analytical sheets are contextualized in the broad panorama of reference, both national and European, and cover a chronological span that extends from the sixteenth to the twentiet…

Session III - PARAMETRIC MODELLING AND VIDEO MAPPING_INTRODUCTION

2022

Virtual representation, free-form surface modelling techniques and numerical control manufacturing, with their intrinsic dynamic and interactive capabilities, have profoundly expanded and enriched the repertoire of geometric shapes, generating innovative design skills and creative languages. There is no doubt about the opportunities for exploration, contamination, relationships and overlapping of ideas, measurements and information, which the continuous evolution of expeditious, parametric and automatic procedures brings to the use of the many products of the information age. Adopting computation as a form of design is profoundly different from simply using tools geared toward increasing th…

Fabrication of a Silicide Thermoelectric Module Employing Fractional Factorial Design Principles

2021

AbstractThermoelectric modules can be used in waste heat harvesting, sensing, and cooling applications. Here, we report on the fabrication and performance of a four-leg module based on abundant silicide materials. While previously optimized Mg2Si0.3Sn0.675Bi0.025 is used as the n-type leg, we employ a fractional factorial design based on the Taguchi methods mapping out a four-dimensional parameter space among Mnx-εMoεSi1.75−δGeδ higher manganese silicide compositions for the p-type material. The module is assembled using a scalable fabrication process, using a Cu metallization layer and a Pb-based soldering paste. The maximum power output density of 53 μW cm–2 is achieved at a hot-side temp…
