Integrity of industrial pipework is ensured through routine inspection. Internal visual inspection tools are capable of characterising degradation in the form of corrosion, pitting, erosion and cracking. The accuracy of such inspection systems has a direct impact on decisions regarding the remaining lifetime of the asset. By minimising error margins, the asset may be operated with confidence for longer, with less uncertainty. Rayleigh-instability-driven dewetting of thin Au and Ag films on indium-tin-oxide surface under nanosecond laser irradiations

Investigations have been carried out on laser-beam-induced nanoparticle (NP) formation in thin (5 nm) Au and Ag films on indium-tin-oxide substrate. After the irradiation the films were observed to break-up into NPs through a dewetting mechanism. This mechanism was investigated as a Rayleigh-instability- driven process. In fact, for each used laser fluence, the resulting Au and Ag NPs' mean size and surface-to-surface mean distance were quantified and correlated between them in the framework of the Rayleigh-instability theory showing an excellent agreement. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2013.

Among the next-generation solar cells, a predominant role is played by Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) based on ruthenium complexes as sensitizers. They take advantage of a photoelectrochemical system to transform solar radiation into electric energy. Sorting of carbon nanotubes by their chirality is the current bottleneck in the way to their broad employment based on their exceptional electronic and optical properties. Abstract Graphene is a 2D nanomaterial having a great potential for applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Composites of graphene with conducting polymers have shown high performance in practical devices and their solution-processability enables low-cost and high-throughput mass manufacturing using printing techniques. Here we measure the effect of incorporation of graphene into poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) to the optical anisotropy, absorbance and conductivity of the film. Development of niobium-based superconducting junctions

This thesis presents a review of publications which mainly focuses on the fabrication and performance of Nb-based normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions and superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions at low temperatures. The Cu/AlOx-Al/Nb based NIS double tunnel junctions were successfully fabricated using conventional electron beam lithography combined with multi-angle thermal evaporation of metals in ultra high vacuum. The subgap characteristics of these junctions showed expected temperature dependence from 0.2 K to 5 K with a good thermometry sensitivity 0.2-0.3 mV/K. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la relación entre la orientación internacional y la supervivencia de empresas manufactureras de reciente creación. Para ello se estudió una muestra de 2.975 nuevos emprendimientos constituidos durante el período 2001-2010 en la industria textil-confección de España. Metodológicamente, se han empleado modelos de duración mediante regresiones de Cox, que modelizan el riesgo relativo asociado con una variable en función del tiempo transcurrido hasta que sucede el evento.
