Ultrahigh-Q Tunable Whispering-Gallery-Mode Microresonator

2009

Typical microresonators exhibit a large frequency spacing between resonances and a limited tunability. This impedes their use in a large class of applications which require a resonance of the microcavity to coincide with a predetermined frequency. Here, we experimentally overcome this limitation with highly prolate-shaped whispering-gallery-mode "bottle microresonators" fabricated from standard optical glass fibers. Our resonators combine an ultra-high quality factor of 360 million, a small mode volume, and near lossless fibre coupling, characteristic of whispering-gallery-mode resonators, with a simple and customizable mode structure enabling full tunability.

PLZT ceramics Fabry-Perot interferometers for visible and mid-infrared lasers

Abstract Phenomena characteristic for thermo-optically and electro-optically tunable PLZT ceramics Fabry-Perot interferometers are analyzed, when these devices are used with Ar+ ion and solid state erbium lasers. A new original technique of Q-switching of mid-infrared solid state pulse lasers using a Fabry-Perot output coupler with integrated Q-switch function is reported.

Abstract Here we demonstrate the results of creating a two-mirror Fabry-Pérot resonator (FPR) that allows achieving the spectral width of a stabilised laser line below 1 kHz. It had low expansion Zerodur spacer and broadband high reflectance mirrors (99.85% in the range of 630 to 1140 nm). FPR was vertically mid-plane mounted for reduced sensitivity to vibrations and included in two shields inside a vacuum chamber to lower temperature fluctuations. Peltier element was used for temperature stabilisation at zero-expansion temperature. Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique was applied. Numerical 2D And 3D Simulations of a Spherical Fabry–Pérot Resonator for Application as a Reference Cavity for Laser Frequency Stabilisation

Abstract We report on the results of a numerical study of deformations of a spherical Fabry-Pérot cavity that can be used for laser frequency stabilisation. It is demonstrated that for a precise simulation of the cavity deformations a 3D model has to be used instead of a simpler 2D model, which employs simulation on the symmetry plane of the cavity. To lower the sensitivity to environmental perturbations, it is suggested to use a material with a low density and a high Young’s modulus. We also show that the mechanical resonance frequencies of the cavity are mainly determined by the size of the cavity.

Optimizing geometry of low-Q all-metal Fabry-Pérot microcavity for fluorescence spectroscopy

Abstract Fluorescence spectroscopy is commonly employed to study the excited-state photophysics of organic molecules. Planar Fabry-Pérot microcavities play an essential role in such studies and a strategic cavity design is necessary to attain an enhanced light-matter interaction. In this work, we computationally study different geometries for a planar metallic Fabry-Pérot microcavity tuned for the absorption of Sulforhodamine 101, a typical dye for fluorescence spectroscopy. Frequency of Fabry disease in patients with small-fibre neuropathy of unknown aetiology: a pilot study

Background:  Early occurrence of small-fibre neuropathy (SFN) is a common feature of Fabry disease (FD) – an X-linked storage disorder caused by reduced activity of the α-galactosidase A (α-GAL). Although SFN may result from different disorders, the cause is often unclear. Therefore, we investigated the frequency of FD in patients with SFN of unknown aetiology. Methods:  Patients with idiopathic SFN, established by sensory quantitative testing and/or skin biopsy, were examined for mutations in the α-GAL gene. Narrow linewidth operation of the RILIS titanium: Sapphire laser at ISOLDE/CERN

Abstract A narrow linewidth operating mode for the Ti:sapphire laser of the CERN ISOLDE Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) has been developed. This satisfies the laser requirements for the programme of in-source resonance ionization spectroscopy measurements and improves the selectivity for isomer separation using RILIS. A linewidth reduction from typically 10 GHz down to 1 GHz was achieved by the intra-cavity insertion of a second (thick) Fabry-Perot etalon. Reliable operation during a laser scan was achieved through motorized control of the tilt angle of each etalon. In-fiber Fabry-Perot refractometer assisted by a long-period grating

We present an optical fiber refractometer based on a Fabry-Perot interferometer defined by two fiber Bragg gratings and an intracavity long-period grating that makes the light confined in the resonator interact with the surrounding medium. The external refractive index is monitored by the resonant frequencies of the Fabry-Perot interferometer, which can be measured either in transmission or in reflection. In this first experiment, wavelength shifts measured with a resolution of 0.1 pm have allowed one to establish a refractive index detection limit of 2.1x10(-5).
