Amplitude analysis ofB0→K+π−π0and evidence of directCPviolation inB→K*πdecays
2011
We analyze the decay B0-->K+ pi- pi0 with a sample of 454 million B Bbar events collected by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC, and extract the complex amplitudes of seven interfering resonances over the Dalitz plot. These results are combined with amplitudes measured in B0-->K_S pi+ pi- decays to construct isospin amplitudes from B0-->K* pi and B0-->rho K decays. We measure the phase of the isospin amplitude Phi_3/2, useful in constraining the CKM unitarity triangle angle gamma and evaluate a CP rate asymmetry sum rule sensitive to the presence of new physics operators. We measure direct CP violation in B0-->K*+ pi- decays at the level of 3 sigma when mea…
Measurement ofCPobservables inB±→DCPK±decays and constraints on the CKM angleγ
2010
Using the entire sample of 467×10^6 Υ(4S)→BB[overbar] decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, we perform an analysis of B^± → DK^± decays, using decay modes in which the neutral D meson decays to either CP-eigenstates or non-CP-eigenstates. We measure the partial decay rate charge asymmetries for CP-even and CP-odd D final states to be A_(CP+) = 0.25±0.06±0.02 and A_(CP-) = -0.09±0.07±0.02, respectively, where the first error is the statistical and the second is the systematic uncertainty. The parameter A_(CP+) is different from zero with a significance of 3.6 standard deviations, constituting evidence f…
Low energy neutrino factory for large theta(13)
2007
If the value of {theta}{sub 13} is within the reach of the upcoming generation of long-baseline experiments, T2K and NOvA, they show that a low-energy neutrino factory, with peak energy in the few GeV range, would provide a sensitive tool to explore CP-violation and the neutrino mass hierarchy. They consider baselines with typical length 1000-1500 km. The unique performance of the low energy neutrino factory is due to the rich neutrino oscillation pattern at energies between 1 and 4 GeV at baselines {Omicron}(1000) km. They perform both a semi-analytical study of the sensitivities and a numerical analysis to explore how well this setup can measure {theta}{sub 13}, CP-violation, and determin…
Studying Indirect Violation of CP, T and CPT in a B-factory
2000
In this work we analyze the observable asymmetries one can build from entangled B-meson states, in order to extract information on the parameters epsilon and delta which govern indirect violation of discrete symmetries. The traditionally proposed observables, based on flavour tags, are not helpful for the study of the Bd-system, where the tiny value of the width difference between physical states clears up such asymmetry effects. Our study makes instead use of CP tags in order to build new asymmetries where the different parameters can be separated out. For this separation, it is decisive to achieve a good time resolution in the measurement of entangled state decays. Nevertheless, even with…
Direct test of time reversal symmetry in the entangled neutral kaon system at a phi-factory
2013
We present a novel method to perform a direct T (time reversal) symmetry test in the neutral kaon system, independent of any CP and/or CPT symmetry tests. This is based on the comparison of suitable transition probabilities, where the required interchange of in out states for a given process is obtained exploiting the Einstein-Podolski-Rosen correlations of neutral kaon pairs produced at a phi-factory. In the time distribution between the two decays, we compare a reference transition like the one defined by the time-ordered decays (l(-), pi pi) with the T-conjugated one defined by (3 pi(0), l(+)). With the use of this and other T-conjugated comparisons, the KLOE-2 experiment at DA Phi NE co…
Performance of production modules of the Belle II pixel detector in a high-energy particle beam
2021
The Belle II experiment at the Super B factory SuperKEKB, an asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider located in Tsukuba, Japan, is tailored to perform precision B physics measurements. The centre of mass energy of the collisions is equal to the rest mass of the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance of $m_{\Upsilon(4S)} = 10.58\,\rm GeV$. A high vertex resolution is essential for measuring the decay vertices of B mesons. Typical momenta of the decay products are ranging from a few tens of MeV to a few GeV and multiple scattering has a significant impact on the vertex resolution. The VerteX Detector (VXD) for Belle II is therefore designed to have as little material as possible inside the acceptance region. Especial…
Neutrino mixing and CP-violation
2000
The prospects of measuring the leptonic angles and CP-odd phases at a neutrino factory are discussed in two scenarios: 1) three active neutrinos as indicated by the present ensemble of atmospheric plus solar data; 2) three active plus one sterile neutrino when the LSND signal is also taken into account. For the latter we develop one and two mass dominance approximations. The appearance of wrong sign muons in long baseline experiments and tau leptons in short baseline ones provides the best tests of CP-violation in scenarios 1) and 2), respectively.
Neutrino oscillation physics with a higher-γ β-beam
2004
The precision measurement and discovery potential of a neutrino factory based on boosted radioactive ions in a storage ring (“β-beam”) is re-examined. In contrast with past designs, which assume ion γ factors of ∼100 and baselines of L=130 km, we emphasize the advantages of boosting the ions to higher γ and increasing the baseline proportionally. In particular, we consider a “medium-γ” scenario (γ∼500, L∼730 km) and a “high-γ” scenario (γ∼2000, L∼3000 km). The increase in statistics, which grow linearly with the average beam energy, the ability to exploit the energy dependence of the signal and the sizable matter effects at this longer baseline all increase the discovery potential of such a…
Observation of a Significant Excess ofπ0π0Events inBMeson Decays
2003
We present a study of the decay B0 -> p0p0 based on a sample of 124 * 106 B.hivin.B pairs recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asym.-energy B Factory at SLAC. We observe 46 +- 13 +- 3 events, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic, corresponding to a significance of 4.2 std. deviations including systematic uncertainties. We measure the branching fraction B(B0 -> p0p0) = (2.1 +- 0.6 +- 0.3) * 10-6, averaged over B0 and .hivin.B0 decays. [on SciFinder (R)]
