Sarcopenia and health-related outcomes: an umbrella review of observational studies
2019
Key summary pointsAimTo investigate associations of sarcopenia with adverse health-related outcomes, through an umbrella review method.FindingsSarcopenia appears to be significantly associated with several adverse outcomes in older people, with a strong evidence for increased risk of mortality, disability, and falls.MessageSarcopenia is associated with several adverse health-related outcomes in older people, indicating the need of assessing this condition in daily practice. AbstractBackgroundThe clinical relevance of sarcopenia has increasingly been recognized. However, whether it is associated with the development of other medical conditions is still unclear. Therefore, we aimed to capture…
Lifetime Adherence to Physical Activity Recommendations and Fall Occurrence in Community-dwelling Older Adults: a Retrospective Cohort Study
2012
Wright RL, Robinson PD, Peters DM. Lifetime adherence to physical activity recommendations and fall occurrence in community-dwelling older adults: a retrospective cohort study. J. Hum. Sport Exerc. Vol. 7, No. 1, pp. 310-320, 2012. Falling is a major health concern for community-dwelling older adults. Regular physical activity has been proposed to prevent falls. The aim of this study was to assess whether the achievement of the 2004 UK Department of Health physical activity recommendations over a lifetime had a protective effect against falling in older people. 313 community-dwelling older adults completed a questionnaire about lifetime physical activity and fall occurrence. There were sign…
Trends in sleeping difficulty among adolescents in five Nordic countries 2002–2014
2019
Sleep has been found to be an important factor in adolescents’ mental and physical health. The aim of the present study was to examine trends in sleep difficulty (i.e., difficulty falling asleep more often than once a week) in the Nordic countries among 11- to 15-year-olds. We analysed Nordic data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study (HBSC), which is conducted every four years, looking specifically at trends in sleep difficulty over a 12-year period from 2002 to 2014. The participants were aged 11 to 15 years. The total number of participants across these years was 113,447. A large percentage (17% to 31% in 2014) of adolescents in the Nordic countries experience sleep dif…
Dance movement therapy and falls prevention
2017
Falls are a leading cause of morbidity, healthcare use and mortality. Dance is a popular form of physical activity among older people and previous research has suggested that it may improve various health outcomes in this population, including balance, gait and muscle performance. A systematic review of the potential benefits of dance on falls and fear of falling is lacking. Thus, we conducted a systematic review considering all randomized controls trials (RCTs) investigating if dance can reduce falls and improve fear of falling in older adults. Major databases were searched from inception until 1 March 2017 and a total of 10 RCTs were identified, which included a total of 680 people (n = 3…
The Multidimensional Prognostic Index Predicts Falls in Older People: An 8-Year Longitudinal Cohort Study of the Osteoarthritis Initiative
2020
Objectives: Falls are associated with several negative outcomes. Early identification of those who are at risk of falling is of importance in geriatrics, and comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) seems to be promising in this regard. Therefore, the present study investigated whether the multidimensional prognostic index (MPI), based on a standard CGA, is associated with falls in the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI). Design: Longitudinal, 8 years of follow-up. Setting and participants: Community-dwelling older people (≥65 years of age) with knee osteoarthritis or at high risk for this condition. Methods: A standardized CGA including information on functional, nutritional, mood, comorbiditi…
Falls, Cognitive Function, and Balance Profiles of Singapore Community-Dwelling Elderly Individuals : Key Risk Factors
2017
Objective: This study compared occurrence of falls, cognitive function, and balance profiles across participants in elderly age categories, investigating associations between the 3 aspects in a sample of Singapore’s elderly population. Method: Community-dwelling elderly individuals (N = 385) were randomly recruited and grouped into “young-old (65-74 years),” “medium-old (75-84 years),” and “oldest-old (above 85 years)” groups. The Fallproof Health and Activity questionnaire, adapted Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Berg Balance Scale (BBS) tests were used to survey information related to falls, cognition, and balance profiles. Results: Findings revealed significant differences in M…
Two-dimensional numerical modeling of fracturing and shear band development in glacier fronts
2014
In this contribution we present a two-dimensional numerical model of a deforming glacier front. The model is based on a hybrid lattice spring network approach where particles in the model can deform in a volume conservative visco-elastic manner but at the same time they can be compressed elastically and fracture by discrete failure. We restrict ourselves to a simple setting where the glacier sits on a frictionless slope that dips with 5–10°, the ice block is fixed on one side and has a free surface on the other. The glacier varies in viscosity and can flow at the base, whereas it is brittle at the top. Results show that the head of the glacier is unstable. Failure happens as a combination o…
Measuring Rainfall Kinetic Power in Two Sicilian Experimental Areas by Drop-Size Distribution Data
2023
The rainfall kinetic energy, which affects soil erosion processes, can be calculated by the drop-size distribution (DSD) and falling velocity. This study presents the outcomes derived by the DSDs recorded with the same optical disdrometer in two experimental areas, located in Sicily (southern Italy). Specifically, the DSDs were recorded from March 2017 to December 2019 at Sparacia and from June 2006 to April 2014 at Palermo. The aims of this paper are both to compare the DSDs for the two sites and to evaluate the applicability of Gamma theoretical distribution. Moreover, the relations of rainfall kinetic power vs. rainfall intensity are assessed. Differences in DSDs, especially for rainfall…
