The Unfolding of Gender Gap in Education

2015

The gender gap in education against females becomes smaller as the level of development increases and turns in their favor in developed countries. Through analysis of regional variation in the gender gap within Turkey, which displays a similar pattern to the crosscountry pattern, this paper studies the factors that lead to the emergence of a gender gap against females. The data for student achievement and aspirations for further education during compulsory school show that females are just as well prepared and motivated for further education as their male counterparts across regions with very different levels of development. Despite this fact, large gaps arise in high school registration an…

The problem of welfare: Is there a welfare civilization?

1990

Abstract Welfare policy is at present increasingly tied both to market forces and to primary social networks. This process splits society into two camps. One‐fifth of the population is segregated from the rest in its dependence on the welfare system, which is in turn dependent on a diminishing portion of the economy and required to rationalize itself in terms of market forces. Meanwhile, the welfare system is making an effort to minimize its social cost by decentralization and by utilizing community ties and lifestyles rather than relying on the professional welfare bureaucracy. This process tends to combine modern forms of production with the meanings and values of traditional society. It …

The impact of variable hatching rates on parasite control: a model of an aquatic ectoparasite in a Finnish fish farm

2006

Summary 1 Many parasites of medical and veterinary importance infect via free-living stages that undergo a period of development in the environment before seeking a host. Frequently, considerable variation is observed in the development rates of these stages, such that some individuals may be considered to occupy distinct subpopulations, similar to a plant's seed bank. Under certain conditions, these subpopulations may act as a reservoir for the parasite, buffering it from the impact of management strategies and reducing control success. 2 We assessed the impact of intraspecific variation in development rates on parasite control by developing a population dynamic model of the ectoparasite A…

INCOME AND QUALITY OF LIFE INFLUENCE ON CITIZENS' PARTICIPATION IN ACTIVITIES OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN LATVIA

2018

The aim of the paper is to analyse the factors influencing the citizen participation in activities of local governments in relation to quality of life in Latvia. The use of the CLEAR model, elaborated by a group of British researchers under guidance of Gerry Stoker, shows the possibilities of participation and engagement of citizens based on theoretical aspects. Latvia, as a member state of the EU, needs to develop and to involve more citizens in different social activities, since it has comparatively small experience in democratic processes due to its past of 50 years being a part of another country — the Soviet Union. The opportunities to participate in the European Parliament’s election …
