Fish farm deposition, resulting in organic matter accumulation on bottom sediments, has been identified as among the main phenomena causing negative environmental impacts in aquaculture. Development of monogenean communities on the gills of roach fry (Rutilus rutilus).

The formation and development of monogenean communities on the gills of roach fry was followed in 1992 from early June to October (size range 9 to 47 mm). Roach fry (n=291) were sampled weekly from the small, humic River Rutajoki in central Finland. A further 209 roach fry were reared in a fish farm supplied by water from the river. Four Dactylogyrus species were found: D. nanus, D. crucifer, D. micracanthus and D. suecicus. Other species found on the gills were Gyrodactylus sp. and Paradiplozoon homoion. Phenotypic variation is suggested to facilitate the persistence of environmentally growing pathogens under environmental change. Sustainability analysis requires a joint assessment of environmental, social and economic aspects of production processes. Here we propose the use of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), a metafrontier (MF) directional distance function (DDF) approach, and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), to assess technological and managerial differences in eco-efficiency between production systems. We use LCA to compute six environmental and health impacts associated with the production processes of nearly 200 Spanish citrus farms belonging to organic and conventional farming systems. A limnological investigation was carried out on the small, endorheic lake, called Lake Sfondato, located in central Sicily (Italy). All the aquatic environments in the central part of the island are rich in salt, with conductivity values above 5 mS cm−1, and are characterized by high alkalinity values and hard waters.
