2016

On July 13th 1920, in Trieste, the fascists destroyed a building known as «Balkan», an outpost of the Slovenian community. This essay studies the symbolic legacy of that assault, as it was one of the first fascist squads actions in Italy. The memory of the «Balkan» is analysed through its connections with important squads leaders’ careers, the effects of Trieste’s urban expansion and the fascist cult of the fallen «squadristi». The timeline of this study stretches until the Second World War, when the fascists attack on the Slovenian and Croatian population hit a new peak.

The Phantasmatic Core of Fascism: Psychoanalytic Theories of Antisemitism and Group Aggression Amongst the ‘Political Freudians’

2022

The period predating and overlapping with World War II saw psychoanalytic authors respond to the authoritarian and fascist developments in Europe through scholarly and analytical writings. These authors, sometimes referenced as ‘political Freudians’, were interested in bringing psychoanalysis in a dialogue with progressive social and pedagogical movements of their times, focusing their critique on the persecutory, eliminatory and purificatory fantasies, which they saw as animating the fascistic movements in Europe. This article analyses selected texts by Otto Fenichel, Ernst Simmel and Rudolf Loewenstein and argues that these authors asked about the political and ethical stakes of the fasci…

2016

This research arises by focusing on the parallelism Augustus-Constantine, sug- gested just by the first christian emperor as a key point of his policy and an inspiring principle of his propaganda in the letter to the provincials of Palestine; after matching these two great emperors and authors of disguised revolutions, we deal with the attitudes of those intellectuals, politicians and ideologists who were involved in laying the foundations of propaganda com- municative system of fascism, with the ambitious programs of urban planning transformation, cultural and social renewal and colonial conquests. Both emperors are present as reference models within the mytography of Mussolini: behind the…

Fascist Terminology in English Lexicography: Considerations from the Merriam-Webster Unabridged and the Oxford English Dictionary

2020

This paper analyses how English lexicography has received the fascist terminology derived from the Italian party ideology and put into practice by Mussolini during his leadership. The research has examined the online Oxford English Dictionary and the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online after taking into consideration the huge literature on Mussolini’s language and cultural policy. In addition, several lexicographical sources such as the Dizionario di politica (1940), the new Dizionario del fascismo (De Grazia and Luzzato 2002) and current Italian lexicographic data banks such as the TRECCANI and DIFIT online have been consulted to compare collected data. Findings have suggested interesting le…

Nostalgia, community and resistance : Counter-cultural politics in a Finnish skinzine

2019

Culture and community building are an essential part of the appeal of the far-right and fascist movements. Studying their cultural products is therefore important for a deeper understanding of the movement and their modus operandi. One elemental part of their culture are the so-called zines, small-scale do-it-yourself magazines intended for scene members. In certain respects, the far-right zines, skinzines, follow the forms and trends of other underground publications, especially punk-zines, with which they also share the resistance identity as stigmatized and marginalized actors. However, the political visions in skinzines are more or less opposite to ‘democratic zines’, creating certain t…

Radicalisation of the British aristocracy : aristocratic decline, inter-war fascism and reactionary rhetoric

2008

The purpose of this study is to shed light on the relationship between the decline of British aristocracy and British inter-war fascism. It is argued that there was a link between the decline of aristocratic influence, achieved largely by political and legislative means, and the subsequent radicalisation of the aristocracy. Furthermore, the history and development of British fascism is examined especially in the aristocratic context, and the pre-war radical right groups are placed in the same continuum as the later actual fascist parties. The aristocratic rhetorical opposition to proposed reforms aimed at the democratisation of British politics is studied in the context of Albert Hirschman'…

Farinacci. Il radicalismo fascista al potere

2007
