Coseismic extension recorded within the damage zone of the Vado di Ferruccio Thrust Fault, Central Apennines, Italy
2018
Recent high resolution hypocentral localisation along active fault systems in the Central Apennines illuminates the activation of seismogenic volumes dipping at low angle (<30°) in extensional settings overprinting contractional deformations affecting the continental crust of the Adria microplate. Individuation of the geological structures and of the fault processes associated with these seismic patterns will contribute to the interpretation of seismic sequence evolution, and seismic hazard studies. Here we report field and microstructural evidence of seismogenic extensional faults localized within pre-existing thrust fault zones. The Vado di Ferruccio Thrust Fault (VFTF) is a narrow …
Design and evaluation of self-healing solutions for future wireless networks
2016
This doctoral dissertation is aimed at the creation of comprehensive and innovative Self-Organizing Networks (SON) solutions for the Network Management of future wireless networks. More specifically, the thesis focuses on the Self-Healing (SH) part of SON. Faults can appear at several functional areas of a complex cellular network. However, the most critical domain from a fault management viewpoint is the Radio Access Network (RAN). The fault management of network elements is not only difficult but also imposes high costs both in capital investment (CAPEX) and operational expenditures (OPEX). The SON concept has emerged with the goal to foster automation and to reduce human involvement in man…
Reliability Analysis of Three Homogeneous Fault-tolerant Inverter Topologies
2016
Abstract—In this article, non-redundant fault-tolerant inverter topologies are addressed. A novel fault-tolerant control strategy which enhances performances during post-fault operation is proposed. Benefits from the proposed strategy over conventional fault-tolerant topologies are investigated in terms of system reliability. Cost, post-fault performances, and system reliability of the proposed solution are compared with both a conventional triac-based fault-tolerant inverter and a T-type inverter. The reliability analysis of each selected configuration is carried out by means of Markov chains. The analysis is validated through a comparison of reliability and sensitivity curves. As shown by…
Bearing fault detection based on time-frequency representations of vibration signals
2015
To prevent failures of a rolling bearing in the gearbox drive system, acceleration sensors are used to detect fault-related signals of the bearing. It is a big challenge to observe and identify signals caused by bearing defects in the time domain or the frequency spectrum by a conventional Fourier analysis. The time-frequency representation of the fault-related signals implemented by the windowed Fourier transform is studied in this work. It is shown that the fault characteristic frequencies can be clearly identified in the time-frequency spectrum if a fault occurs in the bearing of the gearbox at different speeds. Otherwise, the shaft frequency and its multiples are the main harmonics in t…
Hydraulic properties of fault zones in porous carbonates, examples from central and southern Italy
2016
We present the results of in situ permeability measurements performed, using a portable field permeameter, on normal and strike-slip fault zones that crosscut high-porosity carbonate grainstones. The measurement sites expose in the Cretaceous Orfento Formation of the Majella Mountain (Abruzzo, Italy), and the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Favignana Island (Sicily, Italy). Nine small-displacement, compactive shear banding-based fault zones have been tested in the field. The fault offset ranges between 10 and 200 centimeters. The acquired permeability data indicate a two orders of magnitude decrease of porosity and permeability from the host rock to the cataclastic fault cores. A clear de…
A generalized methodology for distribution systems faults identification, location and characterization
2005
Service continuity is of basic importance in the definition of the quality of the electrical energy, for this reason, the research in the field of faults diagnostic for distribution systems is spreading ever more. In this paper, a new methodology for diagnostic management of automated distribution systems is presented. The technique is based on the solution of a circuital model of the electrical system resulting from the composition of distributed parameters quadripoles. The solution gives as a result the identification of the type of fault, of its characteristic parameters and location. The paper shows an application to line to line grounded and ungrounded faults in which also its precisio…
Time domain symmetry parameters analysis for series arc fault detection
2022
This paper presents a feasibility study of exploiting the symmetry of some parameters for series arc fault detection in electrical circuits. The considered parameters are defined in the time domain and they are based on the current signal derivative and the evaluation of cross-correlation between subsequent observation windows. The analysis is carried out for AC systems, starting from an experimental characterization, which has been carried out in accordance with the Standard UL 1699 requirements for "unwanted tripping tests"and "operation inhibition tests"of arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs). The results obtained in different load conditions show that the proposed parameters can be us…
Integreating geological and seismological data in point process models for seismical analysis
2017
Nowadays in the seismic and geological fields, large and complex data sets are available. This information is a valuable source that can be used for improving the seismic hazard assessment of a given region. In particular, the integration of geologic variables into point process models to study seismic pattern is an open research field that has not been fully explored. In this work, we present several open-access datasets (the catalogue of the earthquakes, geological information such as faults, plate boundary and the presence of volcanoes) that are properly treated to describe the seismicity of events occurred in Greece between 2005 and 2014. We use these datasets to fit an advanced spatial…
Extensional deformations during Neogene chain building in Sicily
2010
ABSTRACT In the Madonie-Nebrodi Mts (Northern Sicily belt) both Mesozoic carbonate platform/basin-derived deformed successions and Neogene foredeep deposits outcrop. Thrust sheets piled-up southwards in thin-skin piggy-back sequence. The chain building process began during the Oligo-Miocene. The syntectonic deposits involved in the compressional tectonics give evidence that syn-sedimentary extensional faults developed during fold nucleation and amplification. Syn-sedimentary extensional faults affect the foredeep strata at different stratigraphic levels, which are bounded by unconformities. Normal faults and bedding show constant cut-off relationships and are progressively tilted youngwards…
