South Pole glacial climate reconstruction from multi-borehole laser particulate stratigraphy

AbstractThe IceCube Neutrino Observatory and its prototype, AMANDA, were built in South Pole ice, using powerful hot-water drills to cleanly bore>100 holes to depths up to 2500 m. The construction of these particle physics detectors provided a unique opportunity to examine the deep ice sheet using a variety of novel techniques. We made high-resolution particulate profiles with a laser dust logger in eight of the boreholes during detector commissioning between 2004 and 2010. The South Pole laser logs are among the most clearly resolved measurements of Antarctic dust strata during the last glacial period and can be used to reconstruct paleoclimate records in exceptional detail. Natal dispersal and recruitment of two Bonelli's Eagles <I>Aquila fasciata</I>: a four-year satellite tracking study

To study natal dispersal and recruitment to the breeding population in Bonelli's Eagle, two nestlings were tagged with satellite transmitters in the Iberian Peninsula in 2002. Their monthly ranges and distances were computed and fitted to regression models to describe their general trend. One bird, a female, dispersed and settled rapidly in an area which she explored intensively during four years and which finally became her first breeding site. The natal dis- persal distance was 441 km, and the bird cannot therefore be considered philopatric. Deadline-based QoS Algorithms for High-performance Networks

Quality of service (QoS) is becoming an attractive feature for high-performance networks and parallel machines because it could allow a more efficient use of resources. Deadline-based algorithms can provide powerful QoS provision. However, the cost associated with keeping ordered lists of packets makes them impractical for high-performance networks. In this paper, we explore how to adapt efficiently the earliest deadline first family of algorithms to the high-speed networks environments. The results show excellent performance using just two virtual channels, FIFO queues, and a cost feasible with today's technology.

Remote sensing observations, products, and simulations are fundamental sources of information to monitor our planet and its climate variability. Uncovering the main modes of spatial and temporal variability in Earth data is essential to analyze and understand the underlying physical dynamics and processes driving the Earth System. EAGLE2006 – an intensive field campaign for the advances in land surface hydrometeorological processes – was carried out in the Netherlands from 8 to 18 June 2006, involving 16 institutions with in total 67 people from 16 different countries. Helium isotope systematics of volcanic gases and thermal waters of Guadeloupe Island, Lesser Antilles

Abstract The island of Guadeloupe is located in the middle of the 850 km long Lesser Antilles island arc. Present-day volcanic and geothermal activity is concentrated in two systems both located in the southwestern part of the island (Basse Terre): the La Soufriere volcanic complex and the Bouillante hydrothermal system, some 20 km to the northwest of the volcano. We report here the largest isotopic data set for helium isotopes in hydrothermal gases and waters from both systems, acquired between 1980 and 2012. 3 He/ 4 He ratios in the fumarolic gases of La Soufriere volcano have been quite homogeneous and stable over the last thirty years. ABSTRACT In low latitudes, where seasonal differences of climate are small and usually limited to factors such as winds and precipitation, the weather is largely controlled by diurnal processes. The diurnal variation of rainfall is the most important result of these processes and it is a characteristic part of the climate. In Malaya, diurnal rainfall regimes show seasonal variations, which are closely related to the system of the southeast Asian monsoons.
