In-beam spectroscopic studies of shape coexistence and collectivity in the neutron-deficientZ≈ 82 nuclei

In the present paper we focus on studies of shape coexistence in even-mass nuclei in the neutron-deficient Pb region. They are based on experiments carried out using tagging techniques in the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Excited states in many of these nuclei can only be accessed via fusion-evaporation reactions employing high-intensity stable-ion beams. The key features in these experiments are high selectivity, clean spectra and instrumentation that enables high count rates. We review three spectroscopic highlights in this region. peerReviewed

Nuclear physics far from stability and explosive nucleosynthesis processes

In this paper, we discuss the astrophysically relevant nuclear-physics input for a selected set of explosive nucleosynthesis scenarios leading to rapid protonand neutron-capture processes. Observables (like,e.g., luminosity curves or abundance distributions) witness the interplay between nuclear-structure aspects far from β-stability and the appropriate astrophysical environments, and can give guidance to and constraints on stellar conditions and/or key features of reaction and decay data for radioactive isotopes.

Soliton rains in a fiber laser: An experimental study

Rains of solitons constitute a class of nonlinear dynamics of dissipative soliton ensembles that we briefly reported in Opt. Express 17, 11776 (2009) from a fiber laser experiment. The existence of a relatively intense noisy background together with several tens of soliton pulses aggregated in a condensed soliton phase constitutes a necessary condition for their appearance. New soliton pulses form spontaneously from the background fluctuations and drift until they reach the condensed soliton phase. Robust single-parameter quantized charge pumping

2008

This paper investigates a scheme for quantized charge pumping based on single-parameter modulation. The device was realized in an AlGaAs-GaAs gated nanowire. We find a remarkable robustness of the quantized regime against variations in the driving signal, which increases with applied rf power. This feature together with its simple configuration makes this device a potential module for a scalable source of quantized current.

A quantum non-Markovian collision model: incoherent swap case

We have recently presented a collision-model-based framework to approach non-Markovian quantum dynamics [Ciccarello F Palma G M and Giovannetti V 2013 Phys. Rev. A 87, 040103(R)]. As a distinctive feature, memory is introduced in a dynamical way by adding extra inter-ancillary collisions to a standard (memoryless) collision model. Here, we focus on the case where such intra-bath collisions are described by incoherent partial swap operations. After briefly reviewing the model, we show how to include temperature as an additional parameter by relaxing the assumption that each bath ancilla is initially in a pure state. Wavelength-multiplexed computational temporal ghost imaging

Ghost imaging is a novel imaging technique based on correlation measurements between a structured illumination pattern (the reference) and the total intensity transmitted or reflected by an object [1]. The reference illumination patterns may be either randomly generated by a spatially incoherent light source, or pre-programmed e.g. with a spatial light modulator. Light transmitted (or reflected) by the object is measured by a single-pixel “bucket” detector with null spatial resolution. A single atom-based generation of Bell states of two cavities

A new conditional scheme for generating Bell states of two spatially separated high-Q cavities is reported. Our method is based on the passage of one atom only through the two cavities. A distinctive feature of our treatment is that it incorporates from the very beginning the unavoidable presence of fluctuations in the atom-cavity interaction times. The possibility of successfully implementing our proposal against cavity losses and atomic spontaneous decay is carefully discussed.

Propagation of fourth sound in turbulent superfluids via extended thermodynamics

The work deals with further developments of a study previously initiated, in which a macroscopic one-fluid model of inhomogeneous turbulent superfluids, based on extended thermodynamics, had been formulated. In this work the study is carried on. First the influence of the remnant vortices on the propagation of the first and second sound is studied. Then a boundary condition able to explain the reversible flow of superfluid flowing through a thin capillary is postulated and two vector fields, which have the dimensions of velocity and can be interpreted as the velocities of normal and superfluid components, are introduced.
