The Context of Rural–Urban Relationships in Finland, France, Hungary, The Netherlands and Spain

2009

This paper presents a comprehensive view of the empirical research findings concerning rurban relationships in different European countries (Finland, France, Hungary, the Netherlands and Spain), through two types of rurban territories: those that are placed close to (or included in) a metropolitan area and those that are close to (and influenced by) an important tourist area or place. Its main aim is to show the diversity of European experiences with regard to urban pressure in this type of areas, highlighting the socio-economic and institutional contexts in explaining similarities and differences between five countries. The results will review the various meanings of ‘rural’ and ‘rurality’…

Quaternary development and evolution of the sedimentary environments in the Central Mediterranean Spanish coast

1995

Abstract The reconstruction of the evolutive phases of the Mediterranean Spanish Central sector during the Late Quaternary is the aim of this work. From geomorphological, sedimentological and chronometrical studies, different morphostratigraphic units are determined. Results point out the development of several transgressive phases. The older one go back to isotope stage 7. The Eemian transgression is broadly recorded, and its coastline was near the present one. During the Flandrian episode, the sea surpassed the current coastline in the northern coastal plain, while in the meridional littoral erosive notches were formed between +1 and +2 m. During the regressive events, we find the prograd…

Yttrium and REE signature recognized in Central Mediterranean Sea (ODP Site 963) during the MIS 6–MIS 5 transition

2010

Abstract The Mediterranean Sea acts as a miniature ocean with the development of its own conveyor belt. It constitutes an ideal location to study and forecast how the marine environment responds to rapid climatic change. Here we present a palaeoenvironmental study carried out on the sediments of ODP Site 963, recovered in the Sicily Channel, the sill which divides the western from the eastern Mediterranean basin. We focused on the transition between the penultimate glacial (MIS 6) and the last interglacial (MIS 5), between approximately 130 and 115 kyr BP. A novel approach is proposed, taking into account centennial-scale geochemical data on major elements, selected trace elements, and yttr…

Electricity load forecasting for Urban area using weather forecast information

2016

The global demand for energy is increasing daily with the expansion of energy infrastructure and the addition of new appliances. Efficient Energy Management System (EMS) is the need of the day. All residential and commercial buildings can achieve better energy efficiency and consumption with the use of EMS. Load forecasting is one of the methods to enable EMS to work efficiently. The accuracy of load forecast depends on many factors. The load forecast model must consider the weather forecast for the region in developing an accurate forecast. This paper develops Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Bagged Regression Trees to generate and predicted load forecast in Urban area using Meteorologi…

Some Considerations on 3-D and 2-D Numerical Models for the Assessment of the Stability of Underground Caves

2014

The application of numerical modeling to the analysis of the stability of both natural and man-made underground caves is rapidly increasing due to the availability of powerful numerical codes, that can account for either continuum or discontinuum behavior of the rock masses. Numerical methods allow to overcome traditional methods for cave stability analysis that assume too simplified geometrical, geological and geomechanical conditions. Further, they are also able to assess the potential failure mechanisms of underground systems. On the other hand, the application of numerical methods requires availability of a detailed geo-structural survey of the cave, as well as a proper geomechanical ch…

Shallow urban aquifers under hyper-recharge equatorial conditions and strong anthropogenic constrains. Implications in terms of groundwater resources…

2021

Abstract Humid equatorial regions are recognized as the least documented in term of hydrogeological functioning of aquifers despite the fact that they house a lot of developing countries and that groundwater is often the main water resource. Regarding this aspect, a study was conducted in sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on the Mio-Pliocene aquifer in Douala megacity (Cameroon) which is the rainiest city in West-Africa (about 4000 mm/year) with one of the greatest demographic growth rate of the African continent. Firstly, groundwater recharge rate has been calculated through water balance and Water Table Fluctuation methods. Results show that the aquifer is characterized by a high recharge of 6…

Behavior of rare earth elements in an aquifer perturbed by CO2 injection: Environmental implications

2019

International audience; Three cubic-meters of CO2-saturated water was injected into a subsurface fractured aquifer in a post-mined area, using a push-pull test protocol. Groundwater samples were collected before and after CO2-injection to quantify geochemical changes. CO2-injection initially reduced the pH of water from 7.3 to 5.7, led to the enrichment of major ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, and alkalinity), and dissolved trace metals (including Fe, Mn, As, and Zn) in the groundwater. Rare earth elements (REE) and yttrium concentrations were also measured in these samples before and after CO2 perturbation, to evaluate their behavior. An enrichment of total Y plus REE (REY) occurred. REY fractionation w…

Uncertainty in urban stormwater quality modelling: The effect of acceptability threshold in the GLUE methodology

2007

Uncertainty analysis in integrated urban drainage modelling is of growing importance in the field of water quality. However, only few studies deal with uncertainty quantification in urban drainage modelling; furthermore, the few existing studies mainly focus on quantitative sewer flow modelling rather than uncertainty in water quality aspects. In this context, the generalised likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE) methodology was applied for the evaluation of the uncertainty of an integrated urban drainage model and some of its subjective hypotheses have been explored. More specifically, the influence of the subjective choice of the acceptability threshold has been detected in order to ga…

Wind gustiness and sulphur dioxide concentration in the urban area of Barcelona, Spain

1991

Abstract Data on aerosols and wind parameters recorded at the Barcelona Meteorological Observatory were analysed to determine their relation to wind gustiness, defined according to the criteria used at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The relation between wind gustiness and wind speed and direction was analysed, together with the annual and monthly variation. The relation between the concentration of sulphur dioxide and wind gustiness was also investigated, and proved to be a very useful indicator in this kind of analysis, especially in local studies.

Environmental evidence of Valencia lagoon coastal barrier stabilization from 8500 BP to Present. Climate and eustatic variations

2020

Abstract The Albufera de Valencia is one of the largest lagoon in the Spanish Mediterranean. Two continuous borehole cores reaching depths of 8 and 14 m in the northern part of the lagoon underwent sedimentological, micropaleontological and biological study. The organic content was also analysed, and 14C radiometric dating and amino acid racemization were performed. Study of the content of benthic foraminifera and n-alkanes and alkanoic acids in the lagoon sedimentary record identified several periods. The core records showed seven different environments: alluvial; freshwater marsh; brackish marsh; brackish lagoon; brackish lagoon with marine connection, backbarrier flat, and backshore. The…
