Abstract Groups of juvenile whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus , were exposed for 6 weeks to three different feeding regimes: control (fed every day); 2 + 5 (fed during weekdays); and 2 + 2 (fed 2 days, starved 2 days). The fish in the 2 + 2 group ate and grew less than the controls but the 2 + 5 group was intermediate and did not differ statistically significantly from either of the other two groups. The fish in both treatment groups exhibited clear compensation for the reduced number of feeding days by increasing intake and consequently weight gain during the days when they were fed, and the compensation increased towards the end of the experiment. Three groups of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were fed for seven months, with either a conventional diet or two different organic diets, which contain organic vegetables and a natural antioxidant compound. The two organic diets differed themselves in terms of raw proteins, fish oil, and lipid contents. The nutritional effects of sulla (Hedysarum coronarium L.) forage containing condensed tannins (CT) on growth of lambs, and carcass and meat quality were investigated. Thirty-two male Comisana lambs aged 100 ± 8 days weighing 19.0 ± 2.8 kg were fed fresh forage of sulla or CT-free annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. subsp. Wersterwoldicum) for 49 days until slaughter; in addition, each lamb was supplied with 200 g/days of concentrate. Abstract Effects of soybean meal (SBM) based diet on growth performance, histology of the intestinal epithelium and on the gut microbiota of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated on two trials lasting for 8 weeks (Trial I) and 18 weeks (Trial II). The microbiological characterization was done both with conventional plating techniques, biochemical profiling and length heterogeneity analysis of PCR amplified 16S rDNA (LH-PCR). Typical histological changes were found after 18 weeks of SBM feeding (Trial II). Mean height of simple foldings were significantly higher within the group fed with fish meal (FM) based diet.
