High-sensitive switchable photodetector based on BiFeO3 film with in-plane polarization

2015

A high-sensitive and fast-response photodetector based on BiFeO3 (BFO) ferroelectric thin film is fabricated using coplanar electrode configuration. A large photocurrent/dark current ratio is found up to two orders of magnitude at 1 V bias. Enhanced photocurrent and rectification behavior of the photodetector are observed after applying high voltage pulses to the BFO film. The short-circuit current varies systematically with the poling process and increases linearly with the light density. On the contrary, the open-circuit voltage keeps as a constant during the measurements. We attribute these behaviors to the depolarization field and the interfacial fields at the film-electrode interfaces.…

Photoelectric Current and Dielectric Properties of Barium-Strontium Niobate Ceramics under UV and Visible Irradiation

2015

A study of photocurrent kinetics and dielectric response to infra-low frequencies in the range of the broad phase transition in the Ba0.25Sr0.75Nb2O6 (BSN-75) relaxor ceramics under visible and ultraviolet radiation is reported. Anomalies are revealed in the dependence on field intensity of dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss determined from measurements of polarisation loops before and after illumination. The effects of pyro-electric space charge, polarisation and photovoltaic contributions on behaviour of the measured photocurrent are discussed. Results of the kinetics of photocurrent and dielectric response to infra-low frequency studied at different temperatures are discussed as…

Structural defects in smectic c* liquid crystals

1992

In this paper the structure of a smectic c* liquid crystalline material which can be switched in an electric field is investigated by electron microscopic techniques. Using this method the director field is revealed and typical disclinations observed. Analysis of these features enables the elastic anisotropy of the material to be calculated. Sample description. For our structure investigations a liquid crystalline material (4-(3-(s)-methyl-2-(s)-chloropentanoyloxy)-4'-octyloxy-biphenyl) with two chiral centres was synthesised using known procedures [I]. This material has been investigated by broadband dielectric spectroscopy, the softand Goldstone modes were analysed [2a] as well as the hig…

Tailoring large magnetoresistance in Dirac semimetal SrIrO3 films

2021

Perovskite SrIrO3 is a special Dirac material with fascinating effects due to its strong electron correlation and spin–orbit coupling. In this work, a large magnetoresistance (MR) was observed not only in epitaxial SrIrO3 films but also in a SrIrO3/PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 epitaxial heterostructure with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the external electric field. The magnetoresistance of SrIrO3 (10 nm) and SrIrO3/PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (10 nm/30 nm) reach values as large as 40% and 110% at 9 T and 5 K, respectively. We believe that the unusual magnetoresistance is from the Dirac/Weyl state. Especially, the SrIrO3/PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 bilayer shows negative magnetoresistance with strong oscillations close…

The quantum paraelectric phase of SrTiO$_3$ from first principles

2021

We demonstrate how the quantum paraelectric ground state of SrTiO$_3$ can be accessed via a microscopic $ab~initio$ approach based on density functional theory. At low temperature the quantum fluctuations are strong enough to stabilize the paraelectric phase even though a classical description would predict a ferroelectric phase. We find that accounting for quantum fluctuations of the lattice and for the strong coupling between the ferroelectric soft mode and lattice elongation is necessary to achieve quantitative agreement with experimental frequency of the ferroelectric soft mode. The temperature dependent properties in SrTiO$_3$ are also well captured by the present microscopic framework.

Magnetic Interactions in BiFeO$_3$: a First-Principles Study

2018

First-principles calculations, in combination with the four-state energy mapping method, are performed to extract the magnetic interaction parameters of multiferroic ${\mathrm{BiFeO}}_{3}$. Such parameters include the symmetric exchange (SE) couplings and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions up to second-nearest neighbors, as well as the single-ion anisotropy (SIA). All magnetic parameters are obtained not only for the $R3c$ structural ground state, but also for the $R3m$ and $R\overline{3}c$ phases in order to determine the effects of ferroelectricity and antiferrodistortion distortions, respectively, on these magnetic parameters. In particular, two different second-nearest-neighbor…

Influence of semiconducting electrodes on properties of thin ferroelectric films

2005

The influence of semiconducting electrodes on the properties of thin ferroelectric films is considered within the framework of the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory. The contribution of the electric field produced by charges in the electrodes allowing for the screening length of the carriers is included in the functional of the free energy and so in the Euler-Lagrange equation for the film's polarization. Application of the variational method to the solution of this equation allows the transformation of the free energy functional into a conventional type of free energy with renormalized coefficients. The obtained dependence of the coefficients on the film thickness, temperature, elect…

On the theory of thermodynamic properties of geometrically confined disordered ferroelectrics

2013

Abstract We propose a theoretical approach to calculate the thermodynamic properties of thin films fabricated from disordered ferroelectrics. To calculate the above thermodynamic properties, we use so-called random field method, modified for the case of thin films. The essence of modification is the altering of the interaction between impurity dipoles by geometrical confinement. We show that in thin films the ferroelectric phase transition is inhibited as compared to the case of bulk samples. Our theory is generalizable to ferroelectrics of other shapes as well as magnets and multiferroics.

Polaronic-type excitons in ferroelectric oxides: Microscopic calculations and experimental manifestation

2002

We discuss the current experimental and theoretical understanding of new polaronic-type excitons in ferroelectric-oxides charge-transfer vibronic excitons ~CTVE’s!, which are pairs of strongly correlated electronic and hole polarons. It is shown that charge-transfer‐lattice distortion interactions are the driving forces for CTVE formation. Hartree-Fock-type calculations performed in the framework of the intermediate neglect of differential overlap ~INDO! method as well as photoluminescence, second-harmonic generation, and UVabsorption high-temperature studies performed for ABO3 ferroelectric oxides strongly support the CTVE existence. Both single CTVE and a phase of strongly correlated CTVE…

Semiadiabatic High-Field Polarization Response in Ferroelectrics I: Hysteresis and Nonlinear Susceptibility

2004

Ginzburg-Landau theory for ferroelectric phase instability is combined with Langevin, Fokker-Planck and imaginary time Schrodinger equation techniques to model impact of thermal noise in the kinetics of ferroelectric polarization. The proposed real space/real time numerical method allows to efficiently simulating relaxation, dynamic hysteresis and general dielectric response.
