Prenatal diagnosis and epidemiology of multicystic kidney dysplasia in Europe

2014

ObjectivesThe aim of this study is to describe the prenatal diagnosis and epidemiology of multicystic kidney dysplasia (MCKD). MethodsThe study is based on routinely collected data from a European database of major congenital anomalies including 13 registries with cases born in 1997-2006 and covering 1458552 births. ResultsThere were 601 MCKD cases giving an overall prevalence of 4.12 per 10000 births with regional variation. In live births, 87% of cases had an isolated renal anomaly and 13% had associated major nonrenal anomalies (chromosomal, syndrome or other major anomalies). For the cases with isolated renal anomalies, 51/386 (11%) and 7/386 (2%) choose to terminate the pregnancy or re…

Long-term prediction of birth weight

1993

On the basis of the hypothesis that undisturbed individual growth in fetal life keeps a constant proportional difference with the standard population 50th percentile, birth weight can be predicted with a single sonographic exploration after the 16th week of pregnancy. Data on 135 singleton pregnancies with accurate dates and delivery at term were used. Sonography was performed between the 17th and 36th weeks of pregnancy, in every case at least 4 weeks before delivery. The observed measurements of BPD, FL, and AC were used for the prediction of their values on the day of delivery, applying the Hadlock equation for the estimation of birth weight. The mean error of birth weight predictions wa…

Distribution of lymphocyte surface antigens in healthy neonates.

1994

Using flow cytometric analysis we investigated the distribution of major lymphocyte surface antigens in newborn infants. A total of 221 newborns entered the study, of whom 53 fullfilled our criteria of healthy mature neonates. Percentages of immunofluorescent-positive cells were as follows (median and range from 25th to 75th percentiles given): for CD1 3.8%; 2.3%–5.8%. CD2 60.9%; 52.4%–66.8%. CD3 57.5%; 50.5%–63.3%. TcRas 57.7%; 48.1%–60.0%. CD4 36.3%; 28.0%–42.6%. CD8 23.0%; 20.0%–27.4%. CD11a 56.3%; 46.3%–68.5%. CD19 12.1%; 8.6%–14.8%. CD20 10.9%; 8.4%–12.9%. CD25 2.6%; 2.1%–4.5%. CDw52 61.0%; 51.2%–76.1%. CD71 5.2%; 3.1%–9.3%. While the ranges for the percentage of immunofluorescent-posi…

Ovarian cysts in the fetus and neonate--changes in sonographic pattern in the follow-up and their management.

1992

In a multicenter trial we retrospectively evaluated the clinical and sonographic data of 49 neonatal ovarian cysts, 44 of which were detected prenatally and 5 on the first day after delivery. Of the 44 prenatally detected cysts 39 were purely cystic, 5 echogenic or had a mixed pattern. In 20 patients the cystic appearance changed during delivery from purely cystic to a mixed pattern being independent on the size of the cyst. 26 of the 44 cysts were treated surgically. Salpingotorsion was found in 8 and was independent on the size of the cyst. In 15 a salpingo-oophorectomy or oophorectomy was performed, in 11 the ovary was saved. 23 patients were followed sonographically: 15 cysts showed com…

Role of the gamma-glutamyl cycle in the regulation of amino acid translocation

1989

Amino acid translocation was studied in the mammary gland of lactating rats and in the placenta of pregnant rats. The uptake of amino acids by the mammary gland is maximal on days 10-14 of lactation and is minimal on days 19-21. However, on day 19 maximal uptake can be restored by injection of 1) small amounts of gamma-glutamyl amino acids, 2) 5-oxoproline, and 3) an inhibitor of 5-oxoprolinase. A severe decrease in uptake of amino acids at the peak of lactation is provoked by anthglutin, an inhibitor of gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT). Simultaneous injection of 5-oxoproline blocks these effects of anthglutin. In pregnant rats, inhibition (79%) of placental GGT activity by acivicin resul…

Low target birth weight or growth retardation? Umbilical Doppler flow velocity waveforms and histometric analysis of fetoplacental vascular tree

1993

Objective: The placental vascular architecture of small-for-gestatonal-age fetuses seems to have an impact on the flow patterns in the umbilical arteries. Study Design: Blood flow velocity waveforms of the umbilical arteries were measured by Doppler ultrasonography in nine small-for-gestational-age fetuses with elevated systolic/diastolic ratios of the umbilical arteries, seven small-for-gestational-age fetuses with normal flow patterns, and 14 appropriate-for-gestational-age fetuses with normal flow patterns. After delivery histomorphometric placental investigations were performed. Results: Reduced end-diastolic flow velocities were significantly associated with both a reduction of vascula…

Ethanol inhibits astroglial cell proliferation by disruption of phospholipase D-mediated signaling.

2002

The activation of phospholipase D (PLD) is a common response to mitogenic stimuli in various cell types. As PLD-mediated signaling is known to be disrupted in the presence of ethanol, we tested whether PLD is involved in the ethanol-induced inhibition of cell proliferation in rat cortical primary astrocytes. Readdition of fetal calf serum (FCS) to serum-deprived astroglial cultures caused a rapid, threefold increase of PLD activity and a strong mitogenic response; both effects were dependent on tyrosine kinases but not on protein kinase C. Ethanol (0.1-2%) suppressed the FCS-induced, PLD-mediated formation of phosphatidic acid (PA) as well as astroglial cell proliferation in a concentration…

Non‐immune hydrops fetalis was rare in Sweden during 1997‐2015, but cases were associated with complications and poor prognosis

2020

Aim: The study was designed to document the incidence of non-immune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) at birth and characterise associated outcomes and obstetric complications. Methods: Data on more than 1.9 million births were extracted from the Swedish Birth Register for 1997-2015. Pregnancies not affected by NIHF served as controls. National registers on mortality and hospitalisations provided follow-up information. Results: There were 309 cases of NIHF at birth corresponding to an incidence of 1.6 per 10 000, lower than in previous studies. NIHF was more frequent in mothers aged ≥35 years and with a history of stillbirth. Preterm delivery occurred in 77.7% in the NIHF group, including 31.7% before…

Pregnancy in advanced maternal age: maternal and fetal outcome.

2014

The objective of this research is to evaluate maternal and fetal outcome of pregnant women over 40 years. The outcome has been evaluated through the following data: age, nationality, number of deliveries, complications of pregnancy, type of delivery, newborn's weight and APGAR index. 201 pregnant women have been recruited. The GDM has been observed in 11 women (5.5%). The antepartum haemorrhage has been observed in 7 women (3.5%). The cesarean section rate was 76% in the Group of primiparae woman and 64% in the Group of multiparae. The incidence of Children LBW (low Birth weight) was 17% in the primiparae and 10% in the multiparare.
