Frequency comb generation by electro-optic modulation and applications

The work presented in this thesis relates the development of a dual frequency comb spectrometer based on the electro-optic modulation of a continuous wave laser, and its utilisation for spectroscopic applications in the near- and mid-infrared.Since their discovery in the 1960s, frequency combs have revolutionised the physics, especially in metrology but also in spectroscopy, which lead to the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2005. In this domain of applications, dual frequency comb spectrometers are known to be complex to develop and use. Ultra-high repetition all optical picosecond pulsed sources : applications in optical telecommunications

This thesis presents the work carried out on the realization of fibered 40-GHz picosecond optical pulse sources in the telecommunications C-band. In the first part, we present a numerical and experimental study of the generation of 40-GHz pulse trains thanks to the nonlinear compression of an initial beat-signal by multiple Four-Wave Mixing process. Enhanced temporal stability is achieved by generating the sinusoidal beating thanks to a Mach-Zehnder modulator driven at its zero-transmission working point. Ces mesures concernent l'atténuation, la dispersion, l'aire effective et le coefficient non-linéaire du troisième ordre. Cette fibre présente un fort potentiel pour des applications non-linéaires avec un coefficient non-linéaire Kerr de 15 400 W-1m-1.

Etude des sources supercontinuum à fibres transparentes dans le moyen infrarouge

The work reported in this thesis deals with the study of the supercontinuum generation in fibers transparent in the mid-infrared. To generate a supercontinuum between 3 and 5 µm we compare different glass families such as fluoride glasses, tellurite glasses and chalcogenide glasses. These fibers are pumped with fiber lasers emitting at 2 µm with nanosecond or picosecond pulse duration. This wavelength allows us to reach the zero dispersion wavelength of the chalcogenide tapered fibers. We report supercontinuum generation up to 3800 nm in a fluoride glass fiber. This thesis deals with the work the development of an all-optical device for the control of the polarization state of light. Actually, this feature of light remains so far an uncontrolled variable, which can degrade the performances of all-optical systems. Supercontinuum generation in chalcogenide: application to gas spectroscopy in atmospheric band III

This thesis work aims to contribute to the development of new fiber sources emitting over a wide range of wavelengths in the IR, in particular to detect greenhouse gases in the mid-infrared range. Our spectroscopy results with nitrous oxide N2O and methane CH4 are obtained in band III. To achieve this, the generation of supercontinuum (SC) covering band III was made possible by using chalcogenide optical fibers, purified and free of highly toxic elements according to REACH regulations, in particular arsenic and antimony. This thesis, entitled « Polarisation attraction and incoherent modulation instability in optical fibers », presents a theoretical and experimental study of two new processes from the nonlinear optic in optical fibers domain. We introduce in the first chapter some theoretical notions useful for the comprehension of this work. Then, we demonstrate in the second chapter that it is possible to generate some modulation instability in optical fibers using a partially coherent optical beam.
