A reservoir trap for antiprotons

2015

We have developed techniques to extract arbitrary fractions of antiprotons from an accumulated reservoir, and to inject them into a Penning-trap system for high-precision measurements. In our trap-system antiproton storage times > 1.08 years are estimated. The device is fail-safe against power-cuts of up to 10 hours. This makes our planned comparisons of the fundamental properties of protons and antiprotons independent from accelerator cycles, and will enable us to perform experiments during long accelerator shutdown periods when background magnetic noise is low. The demonstrated scheme has the potential to be applied in many other precision Penning trap experiments dealing with exotic p…

First-order and tricritical wetting transitions in the two-dimensional Ising model caused by interfacial pinning at a defect line

2014

We present a study of the critical behavior of the Blume-Capel model with three spin states (S=±1,0) confined between parallel walls separated by a distance L where competitive surface magnetic fields act. By properly choosing the crystal field (D), which regulates the density of nonmagnetic species (S=0), such that those impurities are excluded from the bulk (where D=) except in the middle of the sample [where DM(L/2)≠], we are able to control the presence of a defect line in the middle of the sample and study its influence on the interface between domains of different spin orientations. So essentially we study an Ising model with a defect line but, unlike previous work where defect lines …

An autoregressive approach to spatio-temporal disease mapping

2007

Disease mapping has been a very active research field during recent years. Nevertheless, time trends in risks have been ignored in most of these studies, yet they can provide information with a very high epidemiological value. Lately, several spatio-temporal models have been proposed, either based on a parametric description of time trends, on independent risk estimates for every period, or on the definition of the joint covariance matrix for all the periods as a Kronecker product of matrices. The following paper offers an autoregressive approach to spatio-temporal disease mapping by fusing ideas from autoregressive time series in order to link information in time and by spatial modelling t…

On the convenience of heteroscedasticity in highly multivariate disease mapping

2019

Highly multivariate disease mapping has recently been proposed as an enhancement of traditional multivariate studies, making it possible to perform the joint analysis of a large number of diseases. This line of research has an important potential since it integrates the information of many diseases into a single model yielding richer and more accurate risk maps. In this paper we show how some of the proposals already put forward in this area display some particular problems when applied to small regions of study. Specifically, the homoscedasticity of these proposals may produce evident misfits and distorted risk maps. In this paper we propose two new models to deal with the variance-adaptiv…

Cosmological origin of anomalous radio background

2012

The ARCADE 2 collaboration has reported a significant excess in the isotropic radio background, whose homogeneity cannot be reconciled with clustered sources. This suggests a cosmological origin prior to structure formation. We investigate several potential mechanisms and show that injection of relativistic electrons through late decays of a metastable particle can give rise to the observed excess radio spectrum through synchrotron emission. However, constraints from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy, on injection of charged particles and on the primordial magnetic field, present a challenge. The simplest scenario is with a greater than or similar to 9 GeV particle decaying i…

Transport properties of Nb/PdNi bilayers

2006

The transport properties of superconductor/weak ferromagnet Nb/Pd86Ni14 sputtered bilayers have been studied. The critical thickness needed for superconductivity to develop is determined from the dependence of the transition temperature T-c on d(Nb). (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Sympathetic cooling of protons and antiprotons with a common endcap Penning trap.

2017

We present an experiment to sympathetically cool protons and antiprotons in a Penning trap by resonantly coupling the particles to laser cooled beryllium ions using a common endcap technique. Our analysis shows that preparation of (anti)protons at mK temperatures on timescales of tens of seconds is feasible. Successful implementation of the technique will have immediate and significant impact on high-precision comparisons of the fundamental properties of protons and antiprotons. This in turn will provide some of the most stringent tests of the fundamental symmetries of the Standard Model.

Design and prototyping of a magnetic actuator based permanent magnets for microbead navigation in viscous environment

2017

International audience; For actuating the magnetic microrobots, two types of magnetic actuation technologies have been used during the last past years. These magnetic technologies may be either electromagnetic coils or permanent magnets based systems. This second solution is not the most used by researchers, because of the difficulties to control the magnetic force. In this paper we propose a magnetic actuator prototype based on permanent magnets. In addition to the magnets, the actuator is also composed of a mechanical structure. This structure is used for positioning the permanent magnets, which allows to control the magnetic force generated by the actuator. We demonstrated in simulation …
