Resolving the true band gap of ZrNiSn half-Heusler thermoelectric materials

2015

N-type XNiSn (X = Ti, Zr, Hf) half-Heusler (HH) compounds possess excellent thermoelectric properties, which are believed to be attributed to their relatively high mobility. However, p-type XNiSn HH compounds have poor figures of merit, zT, compared to XCoSb compounds. This can be traced to the suppression of the magnitude of the thermopower at high temperatures. E_g = 2eS_(max)T_(max) relates the band gap to the thermopower peak. However, from this formula, one would conclude that the band gap of p-type XNiSn solid solutions is only one-third that of n-type XNiSn, which effectively prevents p-type XNiSn HHs from being useful thermoelectric materials. The study of p-type HH Zr_(1−x)Sc_xNiSn…

Universal charts for optical difference frequency generation in the terahertz domain

2010

We present a universal and rigorous approach to study difference frequency generation in the terahertz domain, keeping the number of degrees of freedom to a minimum, through the definition of a suitable figure of merit. The proposed method relies on suitably normalized charts, that enable to predict the optical-to-terahertz conversion efficiency of any system based on wave propagation in quadratic nonlinear materials. The predictions of our approach are found to be in good agreement with the best experimental results reported to date, enabling also to estimate the d22 nonlinear coefficient of high quality GaSe.

Photo-thermal modulation of surface plasmon polariton propagation at telecommunication wavelengths

2013

International audience; We report on photo-thermal modulation of thin film surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) excited at telecom wavelengths and traveling at a gold/air interface. By operating a modulated continuous-wave or a Q-switched nanosecond pump laser, we investigate the photo-thermally induced modulation of SPP propagation mediated by the temperature-dependent ohmic losses in the gold film. We use a fiber-to-fiber characterization set-up to measure accurately the modulation depth of the SPP signal under photo-thermal excitation. On the basis of these measurements, we extract the thermo-plasmonic coefficient of the SPP mode defined as the temperature derivative of the SPP damping const…

Equivalence of Open-Loop and Closed-Loop Operation of SAW Resonators and Delay Lines

2019

International audience; Surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors in the form of two-port resonators or delay lines are widely used in various fields of application. The readout of such sensors is achieved by electronic systems operating either in an open-loop or in a closed-loop configuration. The mode of operation of the sensor system is usually chosen based on requirements like, e.g., bandwidth, dynamic range, linearity, costs, and immunity against environmental influences. Because the limit of detection (LOD) at the output of a sensor system is often one of the most important figures of merit, both readout structures, i.e., open-loop and closed-loop systems, are analyzed in terms of the minim…

Toward device applicable second order NLO polymer materials: definition of the chromophore figure of merit

2007

Maximal achieved second order non linear optical (NLO) efficiency of the PMMA based host – guest systems containing eight dimethylaminobenzylidene -1, 3 - indandione (DMABI) related chromophores have been analysed. Two contradicting sets of NLO chromophore figure of merit (FOM) equations were tested. One of them predicts that NLO efficiency of the poled polymer host -guest film is proportional to ground state dipole d33 ~ 1/μg, another to d33 ~ 1/μg. The best correlations for the maximal achieved nonlinearity were obtained with second set of FOM, especially if high ground state dipole (μg > 7D) chromofores are included in analysis.

New Figure of Merit for Tailoring Optimal Structure of the Second Order NLO Chromophore for Guest-Host Polymers

2008

Reliability to forecast SHG efficiency using two sets of non linear optical (NLO) chromophore figures of merit (FOM) was tested. One of them predicts that SHG efficiency d 33 of the poled guest-host polymer is proportional to ground state dipole ∼ μg, another to ∼ 1/μg. Correlation of maximal achieved second order NLO efficiency of the PMMA based systems containing eight dimethylaminobenzylidene-1, 3-indandione (DMABI) related chromophores with proposed FOM have been analyzed. The best correlations were obtained with second set of FOM, especially if high dipole moment (μg > 7D) chromophores are included in analysis.

Technical and economical comparison between NdFeB and hard ferrites linear electrical generators from sea waves

2015

In this paper the authors perform a technical-economic comparison of two different Tubular Permanent Magnet Linear Machines for sea waves generation by using finite elements analysis. The first configuration includes ferrite rings while the second configuration includes neodymium-iron-boron rings. In order to compare the two types in economic and technical terms, a detailed analysis of the main figures of merit of the two configurations has been carried out. In particular, significant data such as flux distribution, rated voltage and current, axial force, electric power, realization cost and maintenance cost have been compared.

2009

This paper presents the practical results ofthe design solutions, executing and experimentaltesting of a prototype model of o thermoelectricgenerator, based on the conversion of residualthermical energy into electric power, by improving theSeebeck effect. To this purpose, high performancethermoelectric modules have been used, taken from therecent production of the American Corporation Hi-ZTechnology. The prototype thermoelectric generatorbuilt for a demonstrative purposes has got the lowefficiency category. The results taken from the testsand experimental measurements have showntheimportance of the constructive solution of materialsand technologies that have been used. These resultsdirect t…
