Cascades and multifilters
2000
Abstract Cascades (trees every element of which is a filter on the set of its successors), and multifilters, maps from cascades, are introduced. Multisequences constitute a special case of multifilters. Applications to convergence and to topology are indicated.
Dynamic Energy Budget parameters of Brachidontes pharaonis, a lessepsian bivalve in the Mediterranean Sea.
2014
Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models are used for describing the flow of energy through organisms. The most important and powerful aspect of DEB theory is that inter-specific differences can be captured in the same model by comparison of parameter values. However, estimation of these parameters is complicated and can often not be done with direct empirical measurements alone. Here, we present DEB parameter estimates obtained by combining both experimental and literature data for the filter feeder Brachidontes pharaonis, which is considered one among the 100 worst invasive marine species in the Mediterranean Basin. We utilize a statistical procedure based on the covariation method to obtain pa…

Carbon nanotubes thin filters for x-ray detectors in space
2022
In this paper, we present the first results from an investigation performed on nanometric thin pellicles based on carbon nanotubes (CNT) of potential interest for manufacturing large area optical blocking filters to protect soft X-ray detectors in astrophysics space missions. In order to evaluate the effective capability of such materials to block UV/VIS/IR radiation, while being highly transparent in the soft X-rays and strong enough to withstand the severe launch stresses, we have performed a suite of characterization measurements. These include: UV/VIS/IR and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy on bare and Al coated small self-…
X-Ray microcalorimeter detectors - Technology developments for high energy astrophysics space missions
2020
Improvements in the design, fabrication, and performance of astronomical detectors has ushered in the so-called era of multi messenger astrophysics, in which several different signals (electromagnetic waves, gravitational waves, neutrinos, cosmic rays) are processed to obtain detailed descriptions of their sources. Soft x-ray instrumentation has been developed in the last decades and used on board numerous space missions. This has allowed a deep understanding of several physical phenomena taking place in astrophysical sources of different scales from normal stars to galaxy clusters and huge black holes. On the other hand, imaging and spectral capabilities in the the hard x-rays are still la…

AN EKF BASED PROCEDURE FOR AUTOMATIC PATH FOLLOWING IN TURBULENT AIR
2017
Aim of the present paper is to propose a procedure to afford an accurate automatic path following in turbulent air. The technique is based on the simultaneous employment of two different EKF. The first estimates disturbances, the second one estimates deflection that are necessary to reject the estimated disturbances. The first EKF uses measurements gathered in turbulent air. The second EKF obtains command laws able to follow the desired flight path rejecting disturbances. To purchase the objective, aerodynamic coefficients have been modified by adding entirely new derivatives or synthetic increments to basic ones. The modified aircraft parameters are determined by augmenting the aircraft’s …
