The Challenges Underlying Firm Revival and Resilience in the Post-COVID-19 Phase

2022

Covid-19 is an exogenous shock that has deeply modified the basic building blocks and the micro-mechanisms on which socio-economic systems and organizations rest. The vast majority of both factor markets and final markets have been significantly disrupted on a worldwide scale. As all factors that determine severe crises, the Covid-19 pandemic is a low probability and high impact shock which has significantly changed the environment in which firms operate (Grewal and Tansuhaj 2001, Hudecheck et al. 2020). Such changes have nonetheless been asymmetric, whilst they have menaced the survival of a huge number of firms and have brought to their knees many key industries, it has also ignited rapid…

Storytelling and story testing in domestication

2014

The domestication of plants and animals marks one of the most significant transitions in human, and indeed global, history. Traditionally, study of the domestication process was the exclusive domain of archaeologists and agricultural scientists; today it is an increasingly multidisciplinary enterprise that has come to involve the skills of evolutionary biologists and geneticists. Although the application of new information sources and methodologies has dramatically transformed our ability to study and understand domestication, it has also generated increasingly large and complex datasets, the interpretation of which is not straightforward. In particular, challenges of equifinality, evolutio…

2020

The present paper addresses the question of the role Executive Education performs in the strengthening and reproduction of neoliberal ideology. It aims to critically reflect on the way selected contents and teaching activities operate jointly enabling or inhibiting certain perspectives regarding work in organizations. Two Leadership training programs are analyzed in this article, currently delivered by the two most prestigious business schools in Argentina: IAE Business School, and Torcuato Di Tella Business School. I begin with a general description of each one and proceed analyzing their educational proposals. Finally, the critical review reveals their consistency with a set of social rep…

A classroom intervention on Spanish grammar and writing: the use of the past tense with secondary school students / La intervención didáctica en el a…

2015

AbstractThis article presents an innovative experience which links grammar teaching with writing, following the premises of the Grammar Didactic Sequences (GDS) with one basic objective: to create a situation in which students learn to reflect on the language they use and are able to use these reflections to improve their writing. The GDS, focused on the use of past tense verb forms, was carried out with fourth-year secondary school students in Spain. This article highlights the difficulties experienced by students when using grammatical concepts as elements to control usage and the importance of revising texts in order to create metalinguistic awareness in a recursive didactic process: fro…

Design, construction and cooling system performance of a prototype cryogenic stopping cell for the Super-FRS at FAIR

2015

A cryogenic stopping cell for stopping energetic radioactive ions and extracting them as a low energy beam was developed. This first ever cryogenically operated stopping cell serves as prototype device for the Low-Energy Branch of the Super-FRS at FAIR. The cell has a stopping volume that is 1 m long and 25 cm in diameter. Ions are guided by a DC field along the length of the stopping cell and by a combined RF and DC fields provided by an RE carpet at the exit-hole side. The ultra-high purity of the stopping gas required for optimum ion survival is reached by cryogenic operation. The design considerations and construction of the cryogenic stopping cell, as well as some performance character…

Adiabatic Elimination and Sub-space Evolution of Open Quantum Systems

2020

Efficient descriptions of open quantum systems can be obtained by performing an adiabatic elimination of the fast degrees of freedom and formulating effective operators for the slow degrees of freedom in reduced dimensions. Here, we perform the construction of effective operators in frequency space, and using the final value theorem or alternatively the Keldysh theorem, we provide a correction for the trace of the density matrix which takes into account the non trace-preserving character of the evolution. We illustrate our results with two different systems, ones where the eliminated fast subspace is constituted by a continuous set of states and ones with discrete states. Furthermore, we sh…

Dynamic Simulation of Worm Gears Using CAD Applications

2021

The new processes by plastic deformation of the gears eliminate some of the shortcomings of the old methods of their manufacture, at the same time reducing the production costs and the time of realization of the mass production. To carry out this research, the AutoDesk INVENTOR PROFESSIONAL application was chosen. A worm gear was designed, after which the calculations for the worm and worm wheel were performed. Of particular importance for gear, mechanisms are the research of dynamic loads. The use of modern calculation methods, which have wide possibilities for rapid optimization of prototypes, ensures the minimization or sometimes even exclusion of the execution of experimental samples. Using CHARM to Adjust for Cross-hauling: The Case of the Province of Hubei, China

2015

Data for the Chinese province of Hubei are used to assess the performance of Kronenberg's Cross-Hauling Adjusted Regionalization Method (CHARM), a method that takes explicit account of cross-hauling when constructing regional input–output tables. A key determinant of cross-hauling is held to be the heterogeneity of commodities, which is estimated using national data. However, contrary to the authors’ findings for Finland, CHARM does not generate reliable estimates of Hubei's sectoral exports, imports and volume of trade, although it is more successful in estimating sectoral supply multipliers. The poor simulations of regional trade are attributed to the fact that Hubei is a relatively small…
