Models and mecanisms in economics : attempt to clarify their relationships

2000

The article is an attempt to clarify the relationship between economic models and mechanisms. The latter refer to causal processes and interactions. What role do they play in models? One must distinguish between models as non-linguistic constructs and models in the more usual sense of formal systems of definitions and mathematical relations. Models in the second sense are interpreted as purporting to characterise or describe in part models in the first sense. Thus the fact that there is no explicit reference to process-based mechanisms in many formal models does not mean that these mechanisms do not play an essential role in the non-linguistic models that these formal models describe in an …

Analyzing structural change : the biproportional mean filter and the biproportional bimarkovian filter

1998

The biproportional filter was created to analyze structural change between two input-output matrices by removing the effect of differential growth of sectors without predetermining if the model is demand or supply-driven, but with the disadvantage that projecting a first matrix on a second is not the same thing than projecting the second matrix on the first. Here two alternative methods are proposed which has not this last drawback, with the additional advantage for the biproportional bimarkovian filter that effects of sector size are also removed. Methods are compared with an application for France for 1980 and 1996.

Private Equity Investors as Matchmakers: Alliance Formation between PE-backed firms

2016

International audience; Alliances as long term inter-firm cooperation are seen as an important factor of economic growth. They are particularly important for small to medium sized companies whose internal resources are scarce. This article analyses the role of Private Equity Firms that constitute a major source of financing for non-publicly traded small to medium sized companies, in the formation of alliances for their portfolio companies. While previous studies analyse the question in the light of mainstream theories, we rely on the dual theory of the firm, combining the contractual/mainstream view and the knowledge-based view. Contrary to the current literature, our study does not rely on…

2006

International audience; This communication makes a state of the activities carried out by the WP4P coordination group of the 4th work package "Fundamental methods" of the CAENTI, Coordination Action of the European Network of Territorial Intelligence. The WP4P concerns a technical issue, the evaluation of projects funded by the European Commission and of the existing information of the GDs that might be relevant in the territorial intelligence field. The first six months of the CAENTI were mainly devoted to the projects selection. A first task consisted in identifying the projects which are funded by the European Union and that can be considered as belonging to the territorial intelligence …

Why do Venture Capital Companies syndicate? Some New Insights

2016

International audience; Financial theory and resource-based theory are often used to explain syndication practice among venture capital (VC) firms (Lockett & Wright, 2001; Manigart et al., 2006). While extending this diverse set of theoretical frameworks, we investigate the propensity of VC firms to syndicate to provide new insights on the syndicate size, duration and the number of financing rounds of VC firms. While the existing research has focused on the entire VC entity within syndication or on the sole leader of the syndicate, our study considers both parties within the syndicate, the leader and the other syndicate members. Using a longitudinal and unique data set of 196 venture backed…

Serving God in a largely theocratic society: rivalry and cooperation between Church and King

2009

Theocracy may be understood in different ways. The meaning mostly used is government by priesthood but we may call that “ecclesiocracy” or “hierocracy.” Here, theocracy will designate government according to God’s prescriptions and wishes—with the specification that the implementation or satisfaction of these prescriptions and wishes should be a public or political rather than a private affair and should involve some degree of coercion. The two meanings are different notably because, in the second, priests need not be the ones, or the only ones, who rule on God’s behalf.
