The liberalization of international capital flows seems linked to the increase and worsening of financial crisis. Since the financial crisis in 2007-2008, the ideological dimension of “happy globalization” has brought to light and given new strength to dissentient voices that could not be heard before. Financialisation, regional economic development and the coronavirus crisis: a time for spatial monetary policy?

Abstract This paper argues that ‘spatial monetary policy’ may be needed to achieve more territorially balanced economic development. Central banks have been key in fostering financialised economies while also preventing their collapse in times of crisis—a role further strengthened by the coronavirus pandemic. Central banks have thus become the most powerful economic policy-making institutions, just when spatial disparities are likely to deepen. The article presents one of the most important, in the author's opinion, manifestations of further intensification of the processes of financialisation of global financial markets, which was the emergence of decentralized digital currencies (so-called cryptocurrencies) based on blockchain technology. Their creation and existence on the global financial market have been widely considered as one of significant effect of the global financial crisis, which symbolic beginning is September 15, 2008, when one of the largest US investment banks Lehman Brothers collapsed.
