European Thyroid Association Guidelines regarding Thyroid Nodule Molecular Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology Diagnostics
2016
Molecular fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology diagnostics has the potential to address the inherent limitation of FNA cytology which is an indeterminate (atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance follicular neoplasm) cytology. Because of the emerging role of molecular FNA cytology diagnostics, the European Thyroid Association convened a panel of international experts to review methodological aspects, indications, results, and limitations of molecular FNA cytology diagnostics. The panel reviewed the evidence for the diagnostic value of mutation panel assessment (including at least BRAF, NRAS, HRAS, KRAS, PAX8/PPARG, RET/PTC) of targeted next generat…
<title>Multiparameter breast cancer cell image analysis for objective estimation of nuclear grade: comparison with light microscopic observatio…
2000
We performed a multi parameter image analysis assessment of breast cancer cell population nuclear grade (NG), which is regarded as one of the main prognostic factors for treatment efficacy and survival of the patients and compared it with light microscopic estimation of NG. Cytological imprint slides from 20 ductal carcinomas were stained according to Leischmann-AzureII-eosine method, and NG was estimated by light microscopic observation according to Black in Fisher's modification. Simultaneously, using specially elaborated software, in each patient 100 cancer cells were analyzed for nuclear perimeter, diameter, area, nucleolar area, and average intensity of staining. The chromatin structur…
Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma With Exon 2 p.L56M RET Variant: Clinical Particular Features in Two Patients
2018
RET (REarranged during Transfection) proto-oncogene variants are essential for the development of familial and sporadic forms of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The most frequent variants are usually located in exons 10, 11, and 13 through 16 of the RET gene. We report two cases of apparently sporadic MTC associated with the variant in exon 2 of RET gene. Patient 1, a 62-year old man who had undergone adrenalectomy for a 5 cm pheochromocytoma, was screened for type 2 multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN 2) which showed elevated basal and post-intravenous calcium gluconate calcitonin levels. A fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) confirmed the suspicion of MTC. The patient underwent total th…
Ultraschallgezielte Feinnadelaspirationsbiopsie raumfordernder Leber- und Pankreasprozesse und perkutane Abszeß-Drainage
1981
Gingival and submandibular lymph node metastasis of sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma
2010
Introduction: Metastatic tumors of oral and maxillofacial region compromise 1% of all malignant oral neoplasms. Most commonly affect the jaw bone and less commonly intraoral soft tissues. They originate mainly from primary tumors of lung, breast, colon-rectum, prostate and kidney. Case report: a 77 years old man with history of sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma and liver metastasis. Two years later of being free of disease, he presented with submandi- bular lymphadenopathy and a gingival mass in right upper jaw. Fine needle aspiration of the node and biopsy of the gingival mass were performed. The cytological smears showed cohesive cell groups on a necrotic background. Biopsy examination showed …
Impact of the Hypoechogenicity Criteria on Thyroid Nodule Malignancy Risk Stratification Performance by Different TIRADS Systems
2021
Background: Various Thyroid Imaging and Reporting data systems (TIRADS) are used worldwide for risk stratification of thyroid nodules. Their sensitivity is high, while the specificity is suboptimal. The aim of the study was to compare several TIRADS systems and evaluate the effect of hypoechogenicity as a sign of risk of malignancy on the overall assessment of diagnostic accuracy. Methods: The prospective study includes 274 patients with 289 thyroid nodules to whom US and risk of malignancy were assessed according to four TIRADS systems—European (EU-TIRADS), Korean (K-TIRADS), TIRADS by American College of Radiology (ACR TIRADS), and modified Kwak et al. TIRADS (L-TIRADS) systems, in which …
A two miRNA classifier differentiates follicular thyroid carcinomas from follicular thyroid adenomas.
2015
The inherent diagnostic limitations of thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA), especially in the "indeterminate" category, can be partially overcome by molecular analyses. We aimed at the identification of miRNAs that could be used to improve the discrimination of indeterminate FNAs. miRNA expression profiling was performed for 17 follicular carcinomas (FTCs) and 8 follicular adenomas (FAs). The microarray results underwent cross-comparison using three additional microarray data sets. Candidate miRNAs were validated by qPCR in an independent set of 32 FTCs and 46 FAs. Sixty-eight differentially expressed miRNAs were identified. Thirteen miRNAs could be confirmed by cross comparison. A two-miR…
Validity of multiplex biomarker model of 6 genes for the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules
2011
Abstract Background Currently the cytological examination of fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies is the standard technique for the pre-operative differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules. However, the results may be non-informative in ~20% of cases due to an inadequate sampling and the lack of highly specific, measurable cytological criteria, therefore ancillary biomarkers that could aid in these cases are clearly needed. The aim of our study was to evaluate the mRNA expression levels of 8 candidate marker genes as the diagnostic biomarkers for the discrimination of benign and malignant thyroid nodules and to find a combination of biomarkers with the highest diagnostic value. Materials an…
Correlations between the Presence of Hurthle Cells and Cytomorphological Features of Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy in Thyroid Nodules
2019
INTRODUCTION: The presence of Hürthle cells (HC) in fine needle thyroid biopsy (FNAB) is a real concern for a cytologist and also for an endocrinologist. We aimed to demonstrate if the presence of HC is associated with specific cytological features in FNAB results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 89 patients diagnosed with thyroid nodules, with FNAB; were two groups of patients: the study group A (HC+) (22 patients) with HC and control group B (HC-) (67 patients) with no HC; for both groups we analyzed the presence of 9 cytomorphologic features: overall cellularity, background colloid, lymphocyte infiltration, chronic inflammation, large nucleoli, small nucleoli, syn…
