Open Innovation or Innovation in the Open? An Exploration of the Strategy–Innovation Link in Five Scale-Intensive Services
2016
This chapter explores the strategy–innovation link in open service innovations. The increased attention to the role of the firm's external environment on innovation has important implications for strategy. However, our literature review reveals that the strategy–innovation link is ambiguously treated in extant theory, especially with respect to open- and service-innovations. Therefore, we inductively explore innovation practices in five large scale-intensive service firms to establish the link between their strategy and open innovation practices. To our surprise, we find that explicit innovation strategies lack in all five firms. The findings also suggest that the logic of innovation and st…
Strengthening SMEs’ innovation culture through collaborations with public research organizations. Do all firms benefit equally?
2017
The purpose of this paper is to explore whether collaborating with public research organizations (PROs) contributes to strengthening the innovation culture of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). We examine to what extent their innovation culture is reinforced by collaborations with research organizations and investigate the type of organizational strategies that enhance this effect of collaboration. The empirical study is based on a survey of firms that collaborate with the largest Spanish PRO, Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Our results indicate that SMEs differ greatly in their capacity to strengthen their innovation culture through collaboration with research organizatio…

Career Paths in Institutional Business Elites: Finnish Family Firms from 1762–2010
2015
This article analyzes the career paths of family business executives in institutional business elites in Finland using an empirical database based on a Bourdieusian prosopographical approach. The results indicate that career paths became more complex but shortened in length toward the beginning of the twenty-first century. The early career paths of family executives changed from positions as assistants and salesmen in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to governance, chief executive officer (CEO), and management positions in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Compared with the founder generation, next-generation family members benefited from more rapid institutional business eli…
Age and productivity as determinants of firm survival over the industry life cycle
2017
AbstractThis paper contributes to fill the gap between the literature on the determinants of firm survival and the empirical works on the industry life cycle (ILC). Using a representative sample of Spanish firms with 10 or more employees over the period 1993–2009, the role played by firm age and productivity in firm survival is empirically analysed across three stages of the life cycle of forty-seven 3-digit manufacturing sectors. In the ‘early’ stage of the ILC, firm age is negatively correlated with hazard rates while firm productivity is not. Firm productivity is associated with lower hazard in the ‘mature’ stage of the ILC, when competition is primarily efficiency-driven, while firm age…
Finding evidence on the innovative or positional character in medium sized manufacturing firms
2002
Through an empirically based study on 65 medium sized manufacturing firms corresponding to 12 industrial sectors and located in the Spanish region of Valencia, we seek in this paper to provide enough evidence about the prevalence of positional, static and myopic values or, instead, innovative, dynamic and open minded principles, among the firms under study. Gathered into three groups of sectors, depending on the scope of demand (weak, medium and strong demand sectors), we conclude that the weak and medium demand sectors are still facing remarkable challenges basically connected to technology issues, despite improvement in other variables directly linked to an innovative character.
