Synergistic effects of childhood adversity and polygenic risk in first-episode psychosis
2023

Association of extent of cannabis use and psychotic like intoxication experiences in a multi-national sample of first episode psychosis patients and …
2021
AbstractBackgroundFirst episode psychosis (FEP) patients who use cannabis experience more frequent psychotic and euphoric intoxication experiences compared to controls. It is not clear whether this is consequent to patients being more vulnerable to the effects of cannabis use or to their heavier pattern of use. We aimed to determine whether extent of use predicted psychotic-like and euphoric intoxication experiences in patients and controls and whether this differs between groups.MethodsWe analysed data on patients who had ever used cannabis (n = 655) and controls who had ever used cannabis (n = 654) across 15 sites from six countries in the EU-GEI study (2010–2015). We used multiple regres…

The Book in a Nutshell
2016
In second language (L2) learning and teaching, an emic (or insider) perspective has gained ground in the past few years. This perspective highlights the subjective nature of L2 learning: it throws light on the learner’s beliefs about the language to be learned (when compared, for example, with his or her first language (L1) or other languages he or she may know), being a learner, the learning process, and the learning contexts, all of which are charged with positive and negative experiences and loaded with personal meanings. We would argue that this is also true of aspects of teaching.
Mapping the relation between University access test and student’s university performance
2018
The access test is the most used tool to evaluate the initial preparation of an italian student before enrolling at the university. Although the necessity to select the most deserving students seem unquestionably reasonable, we have to wonder if it appears to be a good predictor of university performance. In order to answer this question, the university careers of the students enrolled at two Degree Courses at the University of Palermo (academic year 2013/2014) were analysed. The very aim of this paper is to propose a graphical tool, the Student Efficiency Nomogram, that shows the access test scores together with the first-year performance of the student.
Feedback practices in English in Norwegian upper secondary schools
2015
The trends that we see both in official guidelines and school practices demonstrate a shift towards formative assessment strategies with an emphasis on feed-forward comments to the students. How this is carried out in schools varies, and the material in this study shows signs of changing evaluation practices in English instruction. One of the changes is an increased tendency to use process-oriented approaches to feedback, in which the students work through a draft several times before handing in a final product. Much of what is commented on in the feedback focuses on how ideas are organised and how the text is structured. Though process writing is a familiar concept from first language writ…
First-Person Authority and Self-Knowledge as an Achievement
2010
There is much that I admire in Richard Moran’s account of how firstperson authority may be consistent with self-knowledge as an achievement. In this paper, I examine his attempt to characterize the goal of psychoanalytic treatment, which is surely that the patient should go beyond the mere theoretical acceptance of the analyst’s interpretation, and requires instead a more intimate, first-personal, awareness by the patient of their psychological condition. I object, however, that the way in which Moran distinguishes between the deliberative and the theoretical attitudes is ultimately inconsistent with a satisfactory account of psychoanalytic practice; mainly because, despite Moran’s claims t…
A single-domain Ritz approach for buckling and post-buckling analysis of cracked plates
2019
Abstract A Ritz approach for the analysis of buckling and post-buckling of plates with through-the-thickness cracks is presented. The plate behavior is described by the first order shear deformation theory and von Karman’s geometric nonlinearity. The admissible functions used in the displacements approximation are series of regular orthogonal polynomial supplemented with special functions able to decribe the dicontinuity across the crack and the singularity at the crack tips; boundary functions are used to fullfill the homogeneous essential boundary conditions. Convergence studies and analysis results are presented for buckling and post-buckling of plates with a central through-the-thicknes…
An Integrated Multi-service Software Simulation Platform: SIMPSONS Architecture
2005
This paper describes SIMPSONS (SIp and MPls Simulations On NS-2), which is a software platform for simulating multiple network scenarios, such as Telephony Over IP (TOIP), and multi-services networks extending the functionalities of Network Simulator NS-2. The innovative aspects of SIMPSONS is the complete integration of control protocols and traffic engineering mechanisms inside the same simulation tool. In fact, next generation networks must meet basically two fundamental requirements: support of Quality of Service (QoS) and Traffic Engineering (TE) functionalities. SIMPSONS is able to simulate DiffServ, MPLS, OSPF and SIP and their interaction in everything TOIP scenario. So with this po…
