The pure descent statistic on permutations

2017

International audience; We introduce a new statistic based on permutation descents which has a distribution given by the Stirling numbers of the first kind, i.e., with the same distribution as for the number of cycles in permutations. We study this statistic on the sets of permutations avoiding one pattern of length three by giving bivariate generating functions. As a consequence, new classes of permutations enumerated by the Motzkin numbers are obtained. Finally, we deduce results about the popularity of the pure descents in all these restricted sets. Organisation médicale pendant la première guerre mondiale. L’exemple de l’hôpital américain de Saint-Parize-le-Châtel

2016

The data obtained from the diagnosis carried out in 2014 in Saint-Parize-le-Châtel, in Nievre, compared with those obtained from the archives and information provided by local authorities, enabled us to retrace the history of this large American hospital (700 permanent buildings on 330 ha) built during the winter of 1918-1919. The spatial organization of the camp, which meets various criteria (patient/caregiver, male/female, officers/soldiers, living areas/care areas/technical areas), and equipment (radiology, disinfection, laboratories...) show that it was conceived as a place benefiting from pioneering advances in matters of health.

Beginners' musical instrument practice at home A survey of music-school teachers

2022

The day-to-day instrumental work of the students of conservatories and music schools seems to be an essential condition for a fulfilling and quality musical practice. This survey, addressed to conservatory and music teachers, attempts to understand how this instrumental practice is organized at home by students and families. It deals with student autonomy, personal time and workload, the management of oral instructions, the use of written materials, the methods used to help students in difficulty as well as the role of reprimand and self-assessment during the instrumental lesson. On the teachers' side, it points to a significant use of reprimand to deal with insufficient work situations and…

Excitons in few-layer hexagonal boron nitride: Davydov splitting and surface localization

2018

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has been attracting great attention because of its strong excitonic effects. Taking into account few-layer systems, we investigate theoretically the effects of the number of layers on quasiparticle energies, absorption spectra, and excitonic states, placing particular focus on the Davydov splitting of the lowest bound excitons. We describe how the inter-layer interaction as well as the variation in electronic screening as a function of layer number $N$ affects the electronic and optical properties. Using both \textit{ab initio} simulations and a tight-binding model for an effective Hamiltonian describing the excitons, we characterize in detail the symmetry of t…

Literacy instruction activities and their associations with first graders’ reading performance in two transparent orthographies

2020

The aim of the study was to analyse literacy instruction activities and their associations with the reading performance of first graders in Estonia and Finland, two countries that share similar orthographies and educational systems but differ in the onset of formal reading instruction. The contents of 33 Literacy lessons in first grade spring were analysed and students’ (NEST = 415, NFIN = 154) reading performance was assessed in first grade autumn and spring. The results showed that there were more similarities than differences between the countries in literacy instruction activities, but some country-specific interaction effects were found between students’ reading performance and content…

Polâki v Krimu u 20-30 roki XX stolìttâ

2015

During the last few years Europe is heading the problem of refugees. Nowadays there are 125 ethnicities in Crimea. Poles constitute one of these groups, and it is not the smallest one. A part of the contemporary community of Crimean Poles are the descendants of Polish refugees, who came to the peninsula in the first half of the 20th century. The present article is based on an analysis of the data from Crimean archives referring to the given topic. Published materials may arise the interest of not only historians but can be also useful for people willing to re-establish family ties, as well as in the process of solving problems connected with the refugees, whose number in the contemporary wo…
