Comparative morphometrics of sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo Cetti, 1777), reared in different conditions

The same genetic stock of sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo), cultured in different conditions (lot A, monoculture tank; lot B, monoculture offshore cage; lot C, polyculture tank), was analysed using geometric morphometrics in order to detect changes in shape. Rearing in the offshore cage (lot B) had a significant effect on shape variation when compared to rearing in the two enclosed tanks (A and C). Fish from the tanks show a higher frequency (43.7% in lot A and 37.5% in lot C) of the so-called ‘goitred’ and ‘dorsal flat’ forms, their deformations shown by displacements in the corresponding landmarks of the infraopercular and dorsal areas. Occurrence and pathogenicity of Yersinia ruckeri at fish farms in northern and central Finland

Salmonid fish at fish farms in northern and central Finland and perch, Perca fluviatilis L., roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), and whitefish, Coregonus sp., from four lakes in central Finland were studied between 1985 and 1990 for the occurrence of Yersinia ruckeri. The bacteria were found in fish from both areas, but in most cases, only single diseased salmon, Salmo salar L., brown trout, S. trutta L., rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), whitefish and perch were encountered and were always connected with stress conditions. ABSTRACT Flavobacteria and their phages were isolated from Finnish freshwaters and fish farms. Emphasis was placed on finding phages infecting the fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare for use as phage therapy agents. The host ranges of the flavobacterial phages varied, phages infecting F. columnare being more host specific than the other phages.

The inclusion of vegetal raw materials in feed for fish farming has increased the risk of mycotoxin occurrence in feed, as well as in edible tissues from fish fed with contaminated feed, due to the carry-over to muscle portions. Immunological and pathological status of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) under different long-term feeding regimes

The possible influence of the feeding regime (FR) on the immune system and pathological status of gilthead sea bream was studied. Two growth trials were performed starting at different seasons (trial 1 = March; trial 2 = June) under controlled experimental conditions. In both trials, FR-1 groups received a restricted amount of food, whereas FR-2 groups were fed to visual satiety. Isolation of a new serovar of Vibrio vulnificus pathogenic for eels cultured in freshwater farms

The present work reports the isolation of a new serovar of Vibrio vulnificus pathogenic for eels cultured in freshwater farms. This serovar, named Serovar A, produced two outbreaks of low morbidity and mortality in one Spanish eel farm in September 2000 and March 2001. The vibriosis affected healthy eels, weighting between 10 and 100 g, that had been vaccinated against the serovar E of the species (formerly biotype 2) at least 6 months before. Some of the diseased eels showed symptoms different to those reported for the classical vibriosis due to serovar E.
