Gamma Ray Spectrum from Thermal Neutron Capture on Gadolinium-157
2018
International audience; We have measured the |$\gamma$|-ray energy spectrum from the thermal neutron capture, |${}^{157}$|Gd|$(n,\gamma)$|, on an enriched |$^{157}$|Gd target (Gd|$_{2}$|O|$_{3}$|) in the energy range from 0.11 MeV up to about 8 MeV. The target was placed inside the germanium spectrometer of the ANNRI detector at J-PARC and exposed to a neutron beam from the Japan Spallation Neutron Source (JSNS). Radioactive sources (|$^{60}$|Co, |$^{137}$|Cs, and |$^{152}$|Eu) and the |$^{35}$|Cl(|$n$|,|$\gamma$|) reaction were used to determine the spectrometer‘s detection efficiency for |$\gamma$| rays at energies from 0.3 to 8.5 MeV. Using a Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation of …
Optimal arrangements of 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran molecule pairs for fast singlet fission.
2019
A simplified version of the frontier orbital model has been applied to pairs of C2, C2v, Cs, and C1 symmetry 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran rotamers to determine their best packing for fast singlet fission (SF). For each rotamer the square of the electronic matrix element for SF was calculated at 2.2 × 109 pair geometries and a few thousand most significant physically accessible local maxima were identified in the six-dimensional space of mutual arrangements. At these pair geometries, SF energy balance was evaluated, relative SF rate constants were approximated using Marcus theory, and the SF rate constant kSF was maximized by further optimization of the geometry of the molecular pair. The proce…
Fission and quasifission of composite systems with Z=108−120 : Transition from heavy-ion reactions involving S and Ca to Ti and Ni ions
2016
Background: Suppression of compound nucleus formation in the reactions with heavy ions by a quasifission process in dependence on the reaction entrance channel.
Decay and Fission Hindrance of Two- and Four-QuasiparticleKIsomers inRf254
2015
Two isomers decaying by electromagnetic transitions with half-lives of 4.7(1.1) and 247(73) μs have been discovered in the heavy ^{254}Rf nucleus. The observation of the shorter-lived isomer was made possible by a novel application of a digital data acquisition system. The isomers were interpreted as the K^{π}=8^{-}, ν^{2}(7/2^{+}[624],9/2^{-}[734]) two-quasineutron and the K^{π}=16^{+}, 8^{-}ν^{2}(7/2^{+}[624],9/2^{-}[734])⊗8^{-}π^{2}(7/2^{-}[514],9/2^{+}[624]) four-quasiparticle configurations, respectively. Surprisingly, the lifetime of the two-quasiparticle isomer is more than 4 orders of magnitude shorter than what has been observed for analogous isomers in the lighter N=150 isotones. …
Excited levels in the multishaped Pd117 nucleus studied via β decay of Rh117
2018
Monoisotopic samples of exotic, neutron-rich $^{117}\mathrm{Rh}$ nuclei, produced in the proton-induced fission of $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ and separated using the IGISOL mass separator coupled to the JYFLTRAP Penning trap, were used to perform $\ensuremath{\beta}$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence spectroscopy of $^{117}\mathrm{Pd}$. The spin parity of the ground state of $^{117}\mathrm{Pd}$ was determined to be $1/{2}^{+}$ and the 19.1 ms isomer at 203.2 keV was assigned a spin-parity $7/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. The $^{117}\mathrm{Rh}$ ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$-decay scheme was considerably extended, and various sequences of the levels were interpreted as resulting from the prol…
Stability of the heaviest elements: K isomer in No250
2020
Decay spectroscopy of No250 has been performed using digital electronics and pulse-shape analysis of the fast nuclear decays for the first time. Previous studies of No250 reported two distinct fission decay lifetimes, related to the direct fission of the ground state and to the decay of an isomeric state but without the possibility to determine if the isomeric state decayed directly via fission or via internal electromagnetic transitions to the ground state. The data obtained in the current experiment allowed the puzzle to finally be resolved, attributing the shorter half-life of t1/2=3.8±0.3μs to the ground state and the longer half-life t1/2=34.9−3.2+3.9μs to the decay of an isomeric stat…
K isomerism in Rf255 and total kinetic energy measurements for spontaneous fission of Rf255,256,258
2020
Spontaneous fission properties of the isotopes $^{255}\mathrm{Rf}$, $^{256}\mathrm{Rf}$, and $^{258}\mathrm{Rf}$ produced in the reactions $^{50}\mathrm{Ti}+^{207}\mathrm{Pb}$, $^{50}\mathrm{Ti}+^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$, and $^{50}\mathrm{Ti}+^{209}\mathrm{Bi}$ were studied. The method of time and position correlations was used to identify spontaneous fission events. The correction to the energy deficit in measured total kinetic energy (TKE) determined on the basis of a study of $^{252}\mathrm{No}$ was applied to evaluate the $\overline{\mathrm{TKE}}$ of investigated rutherfordium isotopes. A signature which we assigned tentatively to bimodal fission was observed in TKE distributions of $^{255}\m…
Particular features of ternary fission induced by polarized neutrons in the major actinidesU233,235andPu239,241
2016
Ternary fission in $(n,f)$ reactions was studied with polarized neutrons for the isotopes $^{233,235}\mathrm{U}$ and $^{239,241}\mathrm{Pu}$. A cold longitudinally polarized neutron beam was available at the High Flux Reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. The beam was hitting the fissile targets mounted at the center of a reaction chamber. Detectors for fission fragments and ternary particles were installed in a plane perpendicular to the beam. In earlier work it was discovered that the angular correlations between neutron spin and the momenta of fragments and ternary particles were very different for $^{233}\mathrm{U}$ or $^{235}\mathrm{U}$. These correlations could no…
New Beta-delayed Neutron Measurements in the Light-mass Fission Group
2014
A new accurate determination of beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities from nuclei in the low mass region of the light fission group has been performed. The measurements were carried out using the BELEN 4π neutron counter at the IGISOL-JYFL mass separator in combination with a Penning trap. The new results significantly improve the uncertainties of neutron emission probabilities for {sup 91}Br, {sup 86}As, {sup 85}As, and {sup 85}Ge nuclei.
Effects of one valence proton on seniority and angular momentum of neutrons in neutron-rich Sb51122–131 isotopes
2019
Background: Levels fulfilling the seniority scheme and relevant isomers are commonly observed features in semimagic nuclei; for example, in Sn isotopes (Z=50). Seniority isomers in Sn, with dominantly pure neutron configurations, directly probe the underlying neutron-neutron (νν) interaction. Furthermore, an addition of a valence proton particle or hole, through neutron-proton (νπ) interaction, affects the neutron seniority as well as the angular momentum. Purpose: Benchmark the reproducibility of the experimental observables, like the excitation energies (EX) and the reduced electric-quadrupole transition probabilities [B(E2)], with the results obtained from shell-model interactions for ne…
