Functional results after operative treatment of olecranon fractures.

2004

In a retrospective, nonrandomized study, we reviewed our experience with the operative treatment of olecranon fractures to find out which factors correlate with subjective complaints and functional outcome. A total of 95 consecutive olecranon fractures were operatively treated in our level I trauma institution between March 1, 1992 and March 1, 2000. Medical charts and radiographs of all patients were evaluated. Three patients died, 23 were lost to follow-up. Fifty-eight of 69 available patients (84.0%) were reviewed clinically and/or radiologically after a mean time interval of 36 months. Fracture type, fracture classification, associated lesions, technical correctness of osteosynthesis, a…

Olecranon fractures in adults: factors influencing outcome.

2003

In a retrospective, non-randomized study, we reviewed our experience with the operative treatment of olecranon fractures to find out which factors correlate with subjective complaints and functional outcome. The treatment of wrist fractures with Epibloc System

2011

BACKGROUND Fractures of the distal extremity of the radius are the most common bone lesions of the superior extremity of the body, representing 17% of the fractures treated in First Aid facilities. The restoration of anatomical relationships in the radiocarpal joint is considered to be a prerequisite for good functional recovery. There are numerous methods of treatment of these fractures. The Epibloc system is a percutaneous endomedullary synthesis alternative to the plaster cast in wrist fracture treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS The authors describe their experience with 81 fractures (63 type A2-3 fractures and 18 type C1) of the wrist treated with the Epibloc System (ES). The results were…

Isolated fractures of the greater tuberosity of the proximal humerus

2011

Background and purpose The diagnosis and treatment of isolated greater tuberosity fractures of the proximal humerus is not clear-cut. We retrospectively assessed the clinical and radiographic outcome of isolated greater tuberosity fractures. Patients and methods 30 patients (mean age 58 (26–85) years, 19 women) with 30 closed isolated greater tuberosity fractures were reassessed after an average follow-up time of 3 years with DASH score and Constant score. Radiographic outcome was assessed on standard plain radiographs. Results 14 of 17 patients with undisplaced or slightly displaced fractures (≤ 5 mm) were treated nonoperatively and had good clinical outcome (mean DASH score of 13, mean Co…

Quantitative computed tomography-assisted osteodensitometry of the pelvis after press-fit cup fixation: a prospective ten-year follow-up.

2011

Background: As a follow-up of a previously reported three-year study, we analyzed the periprosthetic acetabular cortical and cancellous bone density changes at ten years after implantation of a press-fit cup. Methods: Prospective clinical, radiographic, and quantitative computed tomography examinations were performed within ten days and at mean periods of one, three, and ten years after total hip arthroplasty with a press-fit cup, a femoral stem with a tapered design, and alumina-alumina pairing. Periacetabular cortical and cancellous bone density (mg CaHA/mL) in the cranial, ventral, and dorsal regions about the cup were measured for twenty-four hips in vivo. Results: All acetabular cups s…

Radiological analysis, operative management and functional outcome of open book pelvic lesions: a 13-year cohort study.

2011

Abstract We present the clinical and radiological outcome of a 13-year cohort study of 38 open book pelvic lesions. All patients were treated in one Level I Trauma centre. In the posterior pelvis, sacro-iliac diastasis was seen in 31 patients, sacral fracture in 7. In all patients with sacro-iliac diastasis, the pubic bone was inferiorly displaced on the primary ap pelvic overview on the side of injury. All but one patient was treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the symphysis pubis. Additional stabilization of the posterior pelvis was done in 9 patients. 32 patients were seen after a median follow up of 84 months. Majeed score and SF-36 questionnaire were used. Functional o…

Operative management of epidural tumors of the spine

1994

Seventy-two patients with neoplastic involvement of the vertebral column were operated on between 1986 and 1991. In the course of 79 operations anterior decompression and stabilization alone were performed in 3 cases, while ventrodorsal spondylodesis was carried out in 10 individuals. The remainder of the patients underwent exclusively dorsal decompression and stabilization, mainly with the Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation (CDI). No external spinal support was required following posterior fixation by CDI alone or in combination with ventral spondylodesis. Forty patients suffered from neurological deficits preoperatively, 20 of them being unable to walk, in most cases owing to severe vertebr…

Fixation pattern analysis with microperimetry in nystagmus patients

2015

Objective: To assess the usefulness of microperimetry (MP) as an additional objective method for characterizing the fixation pattern in nystagmus. Design: Prospective study. Participants: Fifteen eyes of 8 subjects (age, 12–80 years) with nystagmus from the Lluís Alcanyís Foundation (University of Valencia, Spain) were included. Methods: All patients had a comprehensive ophthalmologic examination including a microperimetric examination (MAIA, CenterVue, Padova, Italy). The following microperimetric parameters were evaluated: average threshold (AT), macular integrity index (MI), fixating points within a circle of 1° (P1) and 2° of radius (P2), bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA) considerin…

Subjective fixation disparity affected by dynamic asymmetry, resting vergence, and nonius bias.

2011

PURPOSE This study was undertaken to investigate how subjectively measured fixation disparity can be explained by (1) the convergent-divergent asymmetry of vergence dynamics (called dynamic asymmetry) for a disparity vergence step stimulus of 1° (60 arc min), (2) the dark vergence, and (3) the nonius bias. METHODS Fixation disparity, dark vergence, and nonius bias were measured subjectively using nonius lines. Dynamic vergence step responses (both convergent and divergent) were measured objectively. RESULTS In 20 subjects (mean age, 24.5 ± 4.3 years, visual acuity, ≥1.0; all emmetropic except for one with myopia, wearing contact lenses), multiple regression analyses showed that 39% of the v…
