Autonomous on-board data processing and instrument calibration software for the SO/PHI

2018

The extension of on-board data processing capabilities is an attractive option to reduce telemetry for scientific instruments on deep space missions. The challenges that this presents, however, require a comprehensive software system, which operates on the limited resources a data processing unit in space allows. We implemented such a system for the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) on-board the Solar Orbiter (SO) spacecraft. It ensures autonomous operation to handle long command-response times, easy changing of the processes after new lessons have been learned and meticulous book-keeping of all operations to ensure scientific accuracy. This contribution presents the requirements a…

DEMAND Project: Bottom-Up Aggregation of Prosumers in Distribution Networks

2018

The paper explains the concept of the DEMAND project, whose aim is to develop a technical framework for allowing a Bottom-Up aggregation of prosumers connected to the distribution grid. Load and generation aggregation is a very current issue given the great potential that the coordinated management of distributed resources has on power systems operation and design. The novelty in DEMAND is the absence of a physical aggregator and the recourse to a virtual aggregation environment (VAE) for allowing the exchange of information among the prosumers in order to provide a service to the DSO. After a general description of the research project, the paper presents the services that the aggregated c…

Redesigning Computer-Supported Work Processes with Dual Information Systems: The Work Process Benchmarking Service

1999

The conceptual design of most computer-based information systems reflects a dualism of technology. During the development phase, part of the work-domain-related knowledge is formalized and encoded in the software, making it difficult for users to reflect on and use this knowledge. This design/use dualism contributes to the deterioration of the interpretive flexibility of information systems. We propose an information systems architecture called Dual Information Systems (DIS) that helps bridge the design/use dualism by providing organizations with a set of services that enable and reinforce both effective, institutionalized working and the questioning and (re)construction of computer-support…

Network and System Performance Management for Next Generation Networks

2006

The physical and logical structures of next generation network and service environment is complex and requires increasingly sophisticated and complicated tools to be fully controllable and well managed. The main problem that has risen is that the old telemanagement model has not enough flexibility to manage rapidly and constantly changing network environment. 3G and 4G networks are basically IP based and the knowledge of IP type traffic management is somewhat new and challenging to telecom vendors. The present way of controlling and managing telecom systems is to use Non Real Time off-line PM (Performance Monitoring) and tools. Time periods between tuning can now be some days to some weeks …

An Interactive Simple Indicator-Based Evolutionary Algorithm (I-SIBEA) for Multiobjective Optimization Problems

2015

This paper presents a new preference based interactive evolutionary algorithm (I-SIBEA) for solving multiobjective optimization problems using weighted hypervolume. Here the decision maker iteratively provides her/his preference information in the form of identifying preferred and/or non-preferred solutions from a set of nondominated solutions. This preference information provided by the decision maker is used to assign weights of the weighted hypervolume calculation to solutions in subsequent generations. In any generation, the weighted hypervolume is calculated and solutions are selected to the next generation based on their contribution to the weighted hypervolume. The algorithm is compa…

Mechatronic Concept for Airflow Tests Laboratory Equipment

2015

The paper presents application of the mechatronic concept for laboratory test to support a research activity. Laboratory test is taken into account as set of processes for which some number of environmental parameters must be controlled. This paper describes the laboratory stand for investigations of airflow phenomena, where modern data acquisition system is applied to control pressure, temperature and velocity of the air stream. To acquire and process a large number of data, the idea of virtual instruments is introduced to control system. Modern, high-level graphical language was used and the author’s program was developed. The presented solution of the laboratory stand allows increasing t…

Blockchain-based DR logic: a trade-off between system operator's and customer's needs

2020

This paper describes a way to include the end users of the electrical network in the Demand Response mechanism using the Blockchain technology and the Smart Contract concepts, thus developing a distributed system where customers can communicate directly with the system operator to provide their flexibility in a transparent, secure and traceable way.The historical data on energy consumption and production of the customers is recorded on the Blockchain, with the Smart Contract evaluating the baseline and the potential support that each customer can provide to fulfill the requested load adaptation communicated by the grid operator. The baseline and the optimal power reduction for a customer (e…

Tracking of Quantized Signals Based on Online Kernel Regression

2021

Kernel-based approaches have achieved noticeable success as non-parametric regression methods under the framework of stochastic optimization. However, most of the kernel-based methods in the literature are not suitable to track sequentially streamed quantized data samples from dynamic environments. This shortcoming occurs mainly for two reasons: first, their poor versatility in tracking variables that may change unpredictably over time, primarily because of their lack of flexibility when choosing a functional cost that best suits the associated regression problem; second, their indifference to the smoothness of the underlying physical signal generating those samples. This work introduces a …

Early Vision and Soft Computing

2002

The term soft-computing has been introduced by Zadeh in 1994. Soft-computing provides an appropriate paradigm to program malleable and smooth concepts. For example, it can be used to introduce flexibility in artificial systems and possibly to improve their Intelligent Quotient. Aim of this paper is to describe the applicability of soft-computing to early vision problems. The good performance of this approach is claimed by the fact that digital images are examples of fuzzy entities, where geometry of shapes are not always describable by exact equations and their approximation can be very complex.

SADmote: A Robust and Cost-Effective Device for Environmental Monitoring

2012

Time to deployment for wireless sensor networks could be reduced by using commercial sensor nodes. However, this may lead to suboptimal flexibility, power consumption and cost of the system. Our pilot deployment for precision agriculture and fruit growing research showed similar conclusions and outlined the design decisions leading to SADmote: a new sensor node for environmental monitoring. It was evaluated both in the lab and field, showing improved energy consumption over commercial solutions such as Tmote Sky and Waspmote.
