Flexural behavior of hybrid glass beams with rectangular cross-sections

2018

Abstract An experimental investigation regarding the flexural and the shear behavior of glass beams with length 900, 1300, 1700 mm and rectangular cross-section is presented and discussed. Rectangular cross-sections were obtained by assembling three float glass panels of depth 200 mm and thickness 6 mm through an acrylic adhesive with an effective depth of 19.52 mm (6 + 0.76 + 6 + 0.76 + 6 mm). Some specimens were also reinforced internally with steel plates of thickness 6 mm and depth 25 mm and thickness 6 mm and plates of thickness 6 mm and depth 50 mm placed at the bottom portion of the beams for the entire length of the beams themselves. Three specimens for each investigated series were…

Prediction of dynamic mooring responses of a floating wind turbine using an artificial neural network

2021

Abstract Numerical simulations in coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic codes are known to be a challenge for design and analysis of offshore wind turbine systems because of the large number of design load cases involved in checking the ultimate and fatigue limit states. To alleviate the simulation burden, machine learning methods can be useful. This article investigates the effect of machine learning methods on predicting the mooring line tension of a spar floating wind turbine. The OC3 Hywind wind turbine with a spar-buoy foundation and three mooring lines is selected and simulated with SIMA. A total of 32 sea states with irregular waves are considered. Artificial neural works with different c…

Road traffic detection using wireless noise sensors

2012

In this paper we present our experimental result of using wireless noise sensor network (WNSN) to detect road traffic. With the features implemented in our network such as multipoint measuring, synchronization, real-time data availability, and strict compliance of sound level meter (SLM) standard IEC 61672:2003, we assert the possibility of using WNSN to detect road traffic, such as vehicle amount, size, and velocity. This application can be extended and integrated as a part of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).

A comparative study on the dynamic response of three semisubmersible floating offshore wind turbines

2019

Abstract Currently, there is a great interest to globally develop offshore wind energy due to the greenhouse effect and energy crisis. Great efforts have been devoted to develop reliable floating offshore wind energy technology to exploit the wind energy resources in deep seas. This paper presents a comparative study of the dynamic response of three different semisubmersible floating wind turbine structures. All the three platforms support the same 5MW wind turbine. The platforms examined are: a V-shaped Semi, an OC4-DeepCwind Semi and a Braceless Semi at 200 m water depth. A dynamic analysis is carried out in order to calculate and compare the performance of these platforms. The comparison…

Active heave compensation of floating wind turbine installation using a catamaran construction vessel

2021

Abstract The application of floating wind turbines is limited by the high cost that increases with the water depth. Offshore installation and maintenance continue to consume a high percentage of the project budget. To improve the installation efficiency of the floating offshore wind turbine, a novel concept is proposed by the SFI MOVE project. Several wind turbine superstructure components are preassembled onshore and carried to the installation site by a catamaran construction vessel. Each assembly can then be installed using only one lift, and the concept is less sensitive to weather conditions. In this paper, a control algorithm of the proposed hydraulic active heave compensator system i…

Dialogue in and as European heritage

2022

In this article, we scrutinize the use and institutionalization of the concept of ‘dialogue’ in the cultural politics of the European Union. Our focus is on how dialogue is understood in the context of the European Union’s flagship heritage action, the European Heritage Label, that aims to strengthen citizens’ sense of belonging to the Union. Since heritage has gained increasing prominence in the European Union international relations, we also discuss how ‘dialogue’ is institutionalized in the European Heritage Label as part of the European Union’s heritage diplomacy. We approach dialogue in the context of the European Heritage Label as a floating signifier; an ideal seldom explicitly defi…

Exploring the Simultaneous Effect of Total Ion Concentration and K:Ca:Mg Ratio of the Nutrient Solution on the Growth and Nutritional Value of Hydrop…

2022

Nutrient-efficient plants and agricultural systems could tackle issues resulting from conventional agriculture. Spiny chicory (Cichorium spinosum L.), a very adaptive, wild edible vegetable, is gaining commercial interest as a functional food. Floating-raft hydroponics is a method commonly used for the commercial cultivation of leafy vegetables due to numerous advantages compared to soil cultivation. In this paper, the simultaneous effects of different potassium, calcium and magnesium ratios and different electrical conductivity (EC) levels on the growth and mineral composition of hydroponically grown C. spinosum were investigated. Four nutrient solutions (NS) were compared, two NS with low…

Towards the urbanisation of the Med sea: MSP challenges and opportunities for floating cities between utopia and reality

2023

Anthropogenic climate change effects push us to reimagine human life on the planet confronting extreme living conditions. Droughts, risk of submersion and flooding, saline intrusion, and land scarcity lead to more inhospitable life conditions on land. These demanding risks have led governments to envisage the displacement from the coasts of some cities at significant risk or to think of new settlements for human life, such as floating cities. Floating offshore settlements, reminiscent of the XXth-century architectural utopias, are gaining more and more popularity in contemporary debate and are, in fact, emerging realities in other parts of the globe due to advanced technology.
