Nękana najdłuższym konfliktem zbrojnym w dziejach Indonezji (pomiędzy separatystami a wojskiem indonezyjskim) prowincja Aceh na północy Sumatry uzyskała upragnioną szeroką autonomię w ramach unitarnego państwa. Paradoksalnie do postępów procesu pokojowego przyczyniło się tragiczne w skutkach tsunami, m.in. dlatego, że ofiarodawcy pomocy międzynarodowej wymagali przede wszystkim pokoju i bezpieczeństwa na tym obszarze, a dla władz centralnych nałożenie się na siebie dwóch problemów w tej prowincji też było zbyt dużym wyzwaniem.
