Microbial analysis of raw cows' milk used for cheese-making: influence of storage treatments on microbial composition and other technological traits

2010

Raw milk used to produce Grana cheese was subjected to several treatment regimes, including varying temperatures and storage times. Milk from morning and evening milking were transferred to a dairy factory sepa- rately (double delivery) or together (single delivery), after storage at the farm for 12 h; in the former case, milk was stored at 12 or 8°C, whereas, in the latter, it was kept at ambient temperature or 18°C. Values of pH of the vat milk were lower for milk samples kept at room temperature, while other physico-chemical parameters and rheological characteristics tested did not show significant differ- ences linked to the different storage temperatures of milk used for ‘‘Grana Trenti…

Rafael l. Ninyoles: Recorregut biogràfic i intel·lectual

2020

This article presents the biography and intellectual legacy of Valencian sociologist Rafael L. Ninyoles (1943- 2019). It reviews his formative itinerary, his early contributions to the field of the sociology of language, his latest contributions to the sociology of cities and cultural spaces, and his key involvement in the promoti-on and consolidation of the sociological study of Valencian society. The article includes a note on public acknowledgements to the author, plus an annex with a selective bibliography aimed at serving the interested reader and the posthumous diffusion of Ninyoles? oeuvre.

Influence of PVP/VA copolymer composition on drug–polymer solubility

2015

In this study, the influence of copolymer composition on drug-polymer solubility was investigated. The solubility of the model drug celecoxib (CCX) in various polyvinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate (PVP/VA) copolymer compositions (70/30, 60/40, 50/50 and 30/70 w/w) and the pure homopolymers polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinyl acetate (PVA) was predicted at 25 °C using a thermal analysis method based on the recrystallization of a supersaturated amorphous dispersion (recrystallization method). These solubilities were compared with a prediction based on the solubility of CCX in the liquid monomeric precursors of PVP/VA, N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) and vinyl acetate (VA), using the Flory-Huggins …

Reforzamientos poblacionales de Otanthus maritimus (L.) Hoffmanns. & Link (Compositae) en la Comunidad Valenciana (E de España)

2007

-- Abstract: Otanthus maritimus (Compositae) is a taxon found only in few beaches of the Comunidad Valenciana and is therefore threatened by tourism and urbanism. During the last years, the authors have made seed viability tests as well as dune refforestations and r…

Pollination ecology of the dioecious tree Commiphora guillauminii in Madagascar

2004

In dioecious plant species differences in morphology and resources between female and male flowers can have consequences for flower visitation rates. Female flowers sometimes lack pollen and can be less attractive to pollinators than male flowers. We studied the pollination ecology of the dioecious tree Commiphora guillauminii in a dry deciduous forest in western Madagascar. We recorded floral display, visiting insect species and visitation rates for female and male trees. The results showed that female trees produce significantly larger but fewer flowers per inflorescence than male ones. Number of flowers per tree did not differ between the sexes. During 270 observation-hours we observed 1…

Several taxa new or rare for the local floras of Rincón de Ademuz and/or Los Serranos territories (Valencia province, East of Spain) are reported. Most of them are Iberolevantine endemics or plants regarded as rares for the Valencian flora. Trabajo realizado al amparo del proyecto LIFE B4/3200/93/766 (Creación de la red de microrreservas de flora de la Comunidad Valenciana), cofinanc…

Cloni di carciofo "Romanesco" in coltura annuale in Sicilia

2012

Valutation of “Romanesco” artichoke clones in Sicily The artichoke is one of the most important vegetables cultivated in Sicily, especially for small and medium sized farms. The artichoke in Sicily is represented mostly by local ecotypes and varieties that go into production in autumn, which is most appreciated by consumers in the south. But they have lower production and are less homogeneous than spring varieties. In recent years, agricultural techniques for propagation, fertilization and disease control for the autumn artichokes have improbe considerably, but less for the selection of different cultivars, in particular with the spring varieties. The introduction of the spring cultivars wo…

The paradox of the alien plant Leucaena leucocephala subsp. glabrata (Rose) S. Zárate in Sicily: another threat for the native flora or a valuable re…

2020

With this contribution, an updated picture of the rapid expansion of Leucaena leucocephala subsp. glabrata in Sicily is provided. On the one hand, this is a quite worrying sign, as this woody species figures among the world’s worst invasive alien species. On the other hand, the species shows interesting potential for production purposes (for wood, biomass and for feeding livestock), also considering its nitrogen fixation ability. Consequently, the two opposite options to cope with this species, i.e. cultivation and control/eradication, should accurately take into account the possible uses as well as its invasive behaviou.
