The request of minimally processed vegetable is continuously increasing, and there is a growing interest for new fresh cut products. Cauliflower, as other cabbages, is highly appreciated for its nutritional value due to the good content of vitamins, antioxidants and anti-carcinogenic compounds. Chorological notes on the Sicilian endemic Euphorbia papillaris (Euphorbiaceae)

Thanks to the discovery of a new important site in the Trapani Mountains, the distribution of Euphorbia papillaris, a rare plant endemic to N-W Sicily, is revised. On the basis of the unpublished record, one of the two hypotheses on the discovery of the species in Sicily, previously advanced, is here confirmed. Floristic and ecological information on the new locality are also provided.

Pullulan and dextran: uncommon composition dependent Flory-Huggins interaction parameters of their aqueous solutions.

Vapor pressure measurements were performed for aqueous solutions of pullulan ( M w 280 kg/mol) and dextran ( M w 60 and 2100 kg/mol, respectively) at 25, 37.5, and 50 degrees C. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameters obtained from these measurements, plus information on dilute solutions taken from the literature, show that water is a better solvent for pullulan than for dextran. Furthermore, they evince uncommon composition dependencies, including the concurrent appearance of two extrema, a minimum at moderate polymer concentration and a maximum at high polymer concentration. Effect of ethanol on yeast film formation

<p style="text-align: justify;">In this study, we have investigated the influence of ethanol on yeast film formation and cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH). A yeast strain (P3) previously isolated from film yeast was grown in a medium containing increasing ethanol concentration ranging from 0 to 14 p. cent (v/v). It results from this study that up to 10 p. cent ethanol, the greater was the ethanol concentration, the greater was the growth of film. Using two different techniques (phase partition method, magnobead assay), we have shown that ethanol altered the CSH of the yeast. Modelling the influence of nanoparticles in the phase behaviour of an epoxy/polystyrene mixture

Abstract The cloud point temperatures of four series of epoxy/polystyrene blends have been experimentally determined as a function of polymer mass and system composition. The phase diagrams show an UCST behaviour, increasing incompatibility as the molar mass increases. The Flory–Huggins theory with a concentration-dependent interaction parameter has been developed to study the compatibility of two polymers in presence of spherical nanoparticles. Phase diagrams of the system tetrahydrofuran/γ-butyrolactone/poly(ether imide) and determination of interaction parameters

Abstract The thermodynamic interactions in the ternary mixture tetrahydrofuran/γ-butyrolactone/poly(ether imide) (THF/γ-BL/PEI) are investigated from 30 to 50°C. This is a membrane-forming system with a high He-selectivity. Cloud point measurements show that the two binary polymer solutions THF/PEI and γ-BL/PEI exhibit miscibility gaps which close towards the centre of the ternary phase diagram where the mixtures become homogeneous (cosolvency). Vapour pressures were determined for the subsystem THF/γ-BL. The cloud-point temperatures (T-cl's) of trans-decahydronaphthalene(TD)/polystyrene (PS, (M) over bar (w) = 270 000) solutions were determined by light scattering measurements over a range of temperatures (1-16degreesC), pressures (100-900 bar), and compositions (4.2-21.6 vol.-% polymer). The system phase separates upon cooling and T-cl was found to increase with rising pressure for constant composition. In the absence of special effects, this finding indicates positive excess volume for the mixing. Corrosion of Heritage Objects: Collagen‐Like Triple Helix Found in the Calcium Acetate Hemihydrate Crystal Structure

Abstract Helical motifs are common in nature, for example, the DNA double or the collagen triple helix. In the latter proteins, the helical motif originates from glycine, the smallest amino acid, whose molecular confirmation is closely related to acetic acid. The combination of acetic acid with calcium and water, which are also omnipresent in nature, materializing as calcium acetate hemihydrate, was now revealed to exhibit a collagen‐like triple helix structure. This calcium salt is observed as efflorescence phase on calcareous heritage objects, like historic Mollusca shells, pottery or marble reliefs.
