Bubble formation at variously inclined nozzles

2014

Bubble formation at variously inclined submerged nozzles, fed with a continuous gas flow rate, is investigated. Results confirm previous findings, such as a substantial independence of bubble size of nozzle diameter and its dependence on the cubic root of gas flow rate at sufficiently high values of this parameter. Nozzle inclination in the range between 0 and 135° from the vertical upward orientation is found to have a negligible effect on bubble size. Observed bubble rise velocities lead to an estimation of the average liquid velocity induced by bubbles motion, leading in turn to a very simple correlation for the estimation of the liquid velocities induced by the repeated passage of bubbl…

Mathematical and numerical modeling of an airlift perfusion bioreactor for tissue engineering applications

2022

The Tissue Engineering (TE) strategy is widely focused on the development of perfusion bioreactors to promote the production of three-dimensional (3D) functional tissues. To optimize tissue production, it is worth investigating the engineering parameters of a bioreactor system for identifying a beneficial range of operation variables. Mathematical and numerical modeling of a perfusion bioreactor is capable to provide relevant insights into the fluid flow and nutrients transport while predicting experimental data and exploring the impact of changing operating parameters, such as fluid velocities. In this work, the hydrodynamic parameters and oxygen transport were investigated using mathemati…

Performance evaluation of a biotrickling filter treating a mixture of oxygenated VOCs during intermittent loading

2008

Laboratory scale-studies on the biodegradation of a 1:1:1 weight mixture of three oxygenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ethanol, ethyl acetate, and methyl-ethyl ketone (MEK) in a biotrickling filter (BTF) were carried out using two identically sized columns, filled with different polypropylene rings. The performance of the BTFs was examined for a period of 10 months applying several operational strategies. Similar performance was obtained for both supports. Intermittent flow rate of trickling liquid was shown beneficial to improve the removal efficiency (RE). Continuous feeding of VOC resulted in an excessive accumulation of biomass so high pressure drop was developed in less than 2…

On the use of a powder rheometer to characterize the powder flowability at low consolidation with torque resistances

2017

The Anton Paar Powder Cell was used to measure the torque necessary to rotate an impeller in beds of glass beads, sand and alumina powders aerated between no aeration to the minimum for fluidization. Measured torque values depend on the material tested, on the air flow rate applied, on the impeller depth and on the height of the impeller blade. The effect of the impeller depth is linear for low impeller depth and is less than linear at high depth values. A model was developed for the interpretation of the experimental results based on the idea that the material is shearing on the surface described by the impeller rotation. The model allows to estimate an effectiveness of the impeller in the…

Exergy analysis of reverse electrodialysis

2018

Abstract Reverse electrodialysis in closed loop configurations is a promising membrane technology in the energy conversion and storage fields. One of the main advantages of closed-loop reverse electrodialysis is the possibility of using a wide range of operating concentrations, flow rates and different salts for generating the salinity gradient. In this work, an original exergy analysis of the reverse electrodialysis process was carried out in order to investigate reverse electrodialysis performance in terms of energetic and exergetic efficiency parameters in a wide range of operating conditions. A mono-dimensional model of the reverse electrodialysis process was developed, in which all sou…

Flow hydraulic characteristics determining the occurrence of either smooth or abrupt sewer pressurization

2014

Laboratory experiments showed that pipe pressurization consequent on a drastic reduction in the downstream discharge can occur either by a gradual rising of the free-surface (“smooth” pressurization) or by propagation of a front filling the whole cross-section (“abrupt” pressurization). This study examines the free-surface flow characteristics that determine smooth or abrupt pressurization pattern through a theoretical approach using dimensionless variables. A critical flow rate value, which separates the pressurization patterns, exists for any given pipe diameter. For flow rates higher than this specific value, only abrupt pressurization occurs. For lower flow rates, either smooth or abrup…

Flow injection spectrophotometric determination of lead using 1,5-diphenylthiocarbazone in aqueous micellar

2009

A simple flow injection colorimetric procedure for determining lead was established. It is based on the reaction of lead in sulfuric acid with 1,5-diphenylthiocarbazone and sodium dodecyl sulfate, resulting in an intense red-blue complex with a suitable absorption at 500 nm. A standard or sample solution was injected into the sulfuric acid stream (flow rate of 2.0 ml min(-1)), which was then merged with sodium dodecyl sulfate stream (flow rate of 2.0 ml min(-1)) and 1,5-diphenylthiocarbazone stream (flow rate of 1.5 ml min(-1)). Optimum conditions for determining lead were investigated by univariate method. Under the optimum conditions, a linear calibration graph was obtained over the range…

RAPID CONDENSATIONAL GROWTH OF PARTICLES IN THE INLET OF PARTICLE SIZING INSTRUMENTS

2000

Abstract Rapid particle growth by the condensation of water vapour resulting from expansion in the inlet of particle sizing instruments such as optical particle counters and impactors was modelled. The corrected Mason diffusion growth equation extended to the application for particles beyond the continuum region has been found suitable. The influence of particle acceleration in the nozzle air flow, modelled with the CFX-FLOW3D program, on the condensation process was considered. The study was focused on a typical inlet nozzle of an optical particle counter with an inner diameter of 0.5 mm and a length of 20 mm, connected by an additional 20 mm long conical nozzle at a flow rate of 28.5 ml s…

The Nukiyama Curve in Water Spray Cooling: its Derivation from Temperature-Time Histories and its Dependence on the Quantities that Characterize Drop…

2007

Abstract Heat transfer from hot aluminium walls to cold water sprays was investigated. The method used was the transient two-side symmetric cooling of a planar aluminium target, previously heated to temperatures of up to 750 K, by twin sprays issuing from full-cone swirl spray nozzles of various gauge. The target’s mid-plane temperature was recorded during the cooling transient by thin-foil K thermocouples and a high-frequency data acquisition system. In order to determine the wall temperature Tw, the wall heat flux q w ″ and the q w ″ - T w heat transfer (Nukiyama) curve, two different approaches were used: the first was based on the solution of an inverse heat conduction problem, the seco…

Dynamic mode decomposition of magnetohydrodynamic bubble chain flow in a rectangular vessel

2021

We demonstrate the first application of dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) to bubble flow with resolved dynamic liquid/gas boundaries. Specifically, we have applied DMD to the output of numerical simulations for a system where chains of bubbles ascend through a rectangular liquid metal vessel. Flow patterns have been investigated in the vessel and bubble reference frames. We show how gas flow rate and applied magnetic affect bubble wake flow and larger-scale flow structures within the liquid metal vessel by examining the velocity field mode statistics over trajectory time and total flow time as well as the computed mode velocity fields. The results of this proof-of-concept study indicate that…
