Squeezing induced by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking

In this communication we study in depth the phenomenon of quadrature squeezing generated via spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking discussed for the first time in [1]. The idea can be put in short as follows. Consider a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) tuned to the first family of transverse modes at the signal frequency, and having perfectly spherical mirrors. When pumped above threshold with a Gaussian beam and within a classical description, it is easy to show that a TEM 10 mode with an arbitrary orientation (measured by θ at Fig. 1) emerges at the subharmonic, hence breaking the rotational symmetry of the system in the transverse plane. Double-seed stabilization of a continuum generated from fourth-order modulation instability

Summary form only given. Modulation instability (MI) is a ubiquitous process in which a weak field is exponentially amplified through a balance between dispersive and nonlinear effects. In single-mode scalar optical fibers, the positive Kerr nonlinearity phase-mismatch can be compensated by anomalous second-order dispersion, a process known as MI2. But phase-matched solutions can also exist in normal second-order dispersion region, thanks to negative even higher-order terms [1]. Beam Energy Scan of Specific Heat Through Temperature Fluctuations in Heavy Ion Collisions

Temperature fluctuations may have two distinct origins, first, quantum fluctuations that are initial state fluctuations, and second, thermodynamical fluctuations. We discuss a method of extracting the thermodynamic temperature from the mean transverse momentum of pions, by using controllable parameters such as centrality of the system, and range of the transverse momenta. Event-by-event fluctuations in global temperature over a large phase space provide the specific heat of the system. We present Beam Energy Scan of specific heat from data, AMPT and HRG model prediction. Bistability and “Negative” Viscosity for a Suspension of Insulating Particles in an Electric Field

It is shown that a suspension of insulating particles in a liquid with low conductivity possesses bistability and has a "negative" effective viscosity effect in the electric field due to internal rotations. By Brownian dynamics simulation it has been found that thermal fluctuations of the angular velocity of particles in this bistable system can have a large effect on the viscosity of the suspension.

Abstract The environment of the central Mediterranean Sea is investigated on the basis of high-resolution planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossil data (mean sampling resolutions of about 80 and 160 yr, respectively). MIS 5 is characterized by warm, oligotrophic and stratified waters, while coccolithophore communities developed a vertical zonation that, in today's oceans, is typical of the low-latitude gyres. New quantum Monte Carlo formulation for modeling trans-polyacetylene properties: specific heat calculation

Abstract In this paper we propose a new hybridization scheme for numerical simulation based on the determinantal quantum Monte Carlo and analytical model to treat the vibration mode of one-dimensional trans -polyacetylene chain. We use both of the extended Hubbard model (EHM) and Peierls–Hubbard model to compute the specific heat for different assumptions. For both the two models, our results indicate that the behavior of the specific heat is characterized by a maximum. We also introduce the effect of dimerization through Peierls–Hubbard model. A lipocentric view of peptide-induced pores

Although lipid membranes serve as effective sealing barriers for the passage of most polar solutes, nonmediated leakage is not completely improbable. A high activation energy normally keeps unassisted bilayer permeation at a very low frequency, but lipids are able to self-organize as pores even in peptide-free and protein-free membranes. The probability of leakage phenomena increases under conditions such as phase coexistence, external stress or perturbation associated to binding of nonlipidic molecules. Trends and cycles in U.S. job mobility

Recent studies document a decline in U.S. labor-market fluidity from as early as the 1970s on. Making use of the Annual Social and Economic (ASEC) supplement to the Current Population Survey (CPS), I uncover a pronounced increase in job-to-job mobility from the 1970s to the 1990s, i.e., the annual share of continuously employed job-to-job movers rises from 5.9 percent of the labor force in 1975–1979 to 8.8 percent in 1995–1999. Job-to-job mobility exhibits a downward trend only since the turn of the millennium. Dynamic fluctuations of dipolar semiflexible filaments

On the basis of the model of a flexible magnetic filament, the characteristics of their thermal fluctuations are considered. The crossover of the time dependence of the mean quadratic displacement from t(3/4) to t(1/2) at the magnetic field increase is found. Two characteristic mechanisms of the magnetization relaxation time distribution--straightening of the thermal undulations and excitation of the bending modes of the free ends under the action of an ac magnetic field--are described. In both cases, the characteristic scaling law omega(-3/4) of the magnetic susceptibility in a high-frequency range is found.
