Molecular correlation functions for uniaxial ellipsoids in the isotropic state
2006
We perform event-driven molecular dynamics simulations of a system composed by uniaxial hard ellipsoids for different values of the aspect-ratio and packing fraction . We compare the molecular orientational-dependent structure factors previously calculated within the Percus-Yevick approximation with the numerical results. The agreement between theoretical and numerical results is rather satisfactory. We also show that, for specific orientational quantities, the molecular structure factors are sensitive to the particle shape and can be used to distinguish prolate from oblate ellipsoids. A first-order theoretical expansion around the spherical shape and a geometrical analysis of the configura…
Temporal Dynamics of Incoherent Nonlinear Waves
2014
We review different formalisms describing incoherent waves: the wave turbulence kinetic equation, the Vlasov equation in analogy with Gravitation, the weak Langmuir turbulence equation describing spectral solitons and incoherent dispersive shocks.
Image charge shift in high-precision Penning traps
2019
An ion in a Penning trap induces image charges on the surfaces of the trap electrodes. These induced image charges are used to detect the ion's motional frequencies, but they also create an additional electric field, which shifts the free-space cyclotron frequency typically at a relative level of several ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}11}$. In various high-precision Penning-trap experiments, systematics and their uncertainties are dominated by this so-called image charge shift (ICS). The ICS is investigated in this work by a finite-element simulation and by a dedicated measurement technique. Theoretical and experimental results are in excellent agreement. The measurement is using singly stored ions a…

Simulation of matrix product states for dissipation and thermalization dynamics of open quantum systems
2020
Abstract We transform the system/reservoir coupling model into a one-dimensional semi-infinite discrete chain through unitary transformation to simulate the open quantum system numerically with the help of time evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm. We apply the method to study the dynamics of dissipative systems. We also generate the thermal state of a multimode bath using minimally entangled typical thermal state (METTS) algorithm, and investigate the impact of the thermal bath on an empty system. For both cases, we give an extensive analysis of the impact of the modeling and simulation parameters, and compare the numerics with the analytics.
Coupled fluid-flow and magnetic-field simulation of the Riga dynamo experiment
2006
Magnetic fields of planets, stars, and galaxies result from self-excitation in moving electroconducting fluids, also known as the dynamo effect. This phenomenon was recently experimentally confirmed in the Riga dynamo experiment [ A. Gailitis et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 4365 (2000) ; A. Gailitis et al., Physics of Plasmas 11, 2838 (2004) ], consisting of a helical motion of sodium in a long pipe followed by a straight backflow in a surrounding annular passage, which provided adequate conditions for magnetic-field self-excitation. In this paper, a first attempt to simulate computationally the Riga experiment is reported. The velocity and turbulence fields are modeled by a finite-volume Navi…
Fractal dimension of superfluid turbulence : A random-walk toy model
2021
This paper deals with the fractal dimension of a superfluid vortex tangle. It extends a previous model [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. {\bf 43}, 205501 (2010)] (which was proposed for very low temperature), and it proposes an alternative random walk toy model, which is valid also for finite temperature. This random walk model combines a recent Nemirovskii's proposal, and a simple modelization of a self-similar structure of vortex loops (mimicking the geometry of the loops of several sizes which compose the tangle). The fractal dimension of the vortex tangle is then related to the exponents describing how the vortex energy per unit length changes with the length scales, for which we take recent pr…
Millimeter VLBI of NGC 1052: Dynamics
2016
The LINER galaxy NGC 1052 is an ideal target to study the innermost regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN), given its close distance of about 20 Mpc. The source was observed at 29 epochs from 2005 to 2009 with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 43 GHz. Here, we present a kinematic study of its twin-jet system from a subset of 9 epochs at 43 GHz carried out in 2005 and 2006, finding a bright central feature as the dynamic center. The resulting mean velocities of β = v / c = 0 . 46 ± 0 . 08 and β = 0 . 69 ± 0 . 02 for the western and eastern jet, respectively, give hints towards higher velocities in the eastern jet.
