A regenerative braking system for internal combustion engine vehicles using supercapacitors as energy storage elements - Part 2: Simulation results
2020
Abstract In this two-part work, an electric kinetic energy recovery system (e-KERS) for internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) is presented and its performance evaluated through numerical simulations. The KERS proposed is based on the use of a supercapacitor as energy storage, interfaced to a brushless machine through a properly designed power converter. In Part 1, the system is described and analysed, and the mathematical model used for the simulations is presented. For each component of the KERS, the real efficiency and the power or energy limitations are adequately considered. In Part 2, the energetic and economic advantages attainable by the proposed KERS are evaluated using MATLAB S…

Multi-physical modelling of reverse electrodialysis
2017
Abstract Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is an electrochemical membrane process that directly converts the energy associated with the concentration difference between two salt solutions into electrical energy by means of a selective controlled mixing. The physics of RED involves the interaction of several phenomena of different nature and space-time scales. Therefore, mathematical modelling and numerical simulation tools are crucial for performance prediction. In this work, a multi-physical modelling approach for the simulation of RED units was developed. A periodic portion of a single cell pair was simulated in two dimensions. Fluid dynamics was simulated by the Navier-Stokes and continuity …
A COMPARISON BETWEEN COMBUSTION PHASE INDICATORS FOR OPTIMAL SPARK TIMING
2008
The closed-loop control of internal combustion engine spark timing may be accomplished by means of a combustion phase indicator, i.e., a parameter, derived from in-cylinder pressure analysis, whose variation is mainly referable to combustion phase shift and assumes a fixed reference value under optimal spark timing operation. The aim of the present work is a comparison between different combustion phase indicators, focusing on the performance attainable by a feedback spark timing control, which uses the indicator as pilot variable. An extensive experimental investigation has been carried out, verifying the relationship between indicators’ optimal values and the main engine running parameter…
Performance improvement of a Savonius water rotor with novel blade shapes
2021
Abstract Savonius water rotor is a prominent drag based turbine able to extract energy available in flowing water with low velocity like river streams, tidal currents or other man made water canals. However, in view of its low performance, an enhanced design of the rotor blades is necessary to better its efficiency. Therefore, the present study aims to improve the efficiency of Savonius rotor by changing the blade design. Different blade shapes were investigated numerically using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Using conventional design, the peak power coefficient was found to be 0.166 at tip-speed ratio of 0.78. However, the peak power coefficient reaches 0.184 using the optimal blade …
ECT of ethanol and hexane mixtures in the spinning disk system
2007
The paper presents the research results of electrostatic charging tendency (ECT) of ethanol and hexane mixtures, a liquid of a simple chemical structure and high purity (pro analysis). The research work was carried out in a spinning disk system, where the factors influencing the value of the electrification current registered were the composition of the mixture and the rotational speed of the disk. The research results showed that the biggest ECT changes occur in the range of up to 10% of ethanol content in hexane and the electrification current characteristic has a visible maximum for the mixture, the contents of which constitute 95% of hexane volume and 5% of ethanol by volume. In the nex…
Magnetorheology for suspensions of solid particles dispersed in ferrofluids
2006
In this work, the magnetorheological properties of suspensions of micron-sized iron particles dispersed in magnetite ferrofluids were studied. With this aim, the flow properties of the suspensions in the steady-state regime were investigated using a commercial magnetorheometer with a parallel-plate measuring cell. The effect of both magnetite and iron concentration on the magnitude of the yield stress was studied for a broad range of magnetic fields. In addition, the experimental values of the yield stress were compared with the predictions from the chain model. With this purpose the values of the yield stress were obtained by means of finite element calculations. Interestingly, it was foun…
Thermal conductivity of disperse insulation materials and their mixtures
2017
Development of new, more efficient thermal insulation materials is a key to reduction of heat losses and contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Two innovative materials developed at Thermeko LLC are Izoprok and Izopearl. This research is devoted to experimental study of thermal insulation properties of both materials as well as their mixture. Results show that mixture of 40% Izoprok and 60% of Izopearl has lower thermal conductivity than pure materials. In this work, material thermal conductivity dependence temperature is also measured. Novel modelling approach is used to model spatial distribution of disperse insulation material. Computational fluid dynamics approach is also used to est…
